Amazon Echo Dot 3 Full Setup Video

This must be the most detailed Gen 3 guide out! I know they're obsolete, but I bought a 3rd Gen Dot for a bargain a few weeks ago and managed to get it paired up with a couple of Smart Plugs, controlling 2 lamps. I love it that I can set them to come on just before Sunset (which adjusts, as the year proceeds unlike my old timers) and the fact that I can override the settings without cancelling them with just a voice command! I also, at considerable expense (I don't like the newer Generations, aesthetically, even though they have more functionality, I love the 3rd Gen design) managed to track down a brand new 3rd Gen Dot with Clock, for the bedroom, on eBay, for which, I had to (further expense) buy an official Amazon UK Plug. I have them "grouped" in an "Everywhere" grouping, which is great for when I want to listen to the radio/music when I'm wandering around the flat, or doing chores. I love these little devices and wonder now, after only a few weeks, how I ever got on without them. I'm certainly spending a lot less time on the Smart Phone and the P.C. 😉😉

An Echo 3 was gifted to me. I set it up and enjoyed it. Two days ago, one of the "Amazon Prime Days", ordered two more at $19 each. So they arrived, and I put one in the bedroom and the den. So now I've three "dots", one in the living room, den and bedroom. In the app, I named them for each room. If I want Alexa to allow me to communicate with the one in the den, instead of the bedroom, or vice versa, how does Alex know which room they are PHYSICALLY located? Thanks!

So you can add them into groups (or basically rooms) You'll find that option by hitting plus in the devices tab in the app

Honestly, I just think it comes down to Amazon having more pre-existing relationships with companies. Amazon works with lots of companies in regards to getting their products listed, and that process starts multiple business relationships. Google has been relatively less involved with other companies. Just my 2 cents!

Hi Brianna - I'd really only have one suggestion for you. It's very odd that you get a different named one, so what I'd do is de-register the one shown in the app, and do a complete factory reset of the echo dot. After that, I'd start the whole setup process again.

Hey Robert - No problem...that's why I put videos out like this. You absolutely can purchase one for someone who just has a regular Amazon account. Something like Amazon music won't work on it, but that's OK! There's a free version of that, plus Spotify is available and other music services depending on your region. All good. Buy away, especially during Prime day. I have this same cloth-covered echo, it used to work without ever having downloaded the Alexa app? it's been some months since I've plugged it in and now it wants me to ask the help section in the Alexa app. I've downloaded the Microsoft Alexa app and nothing is happening, I'm surrounded by wi-fi and she says she is having trouble connecting...

Ok, so just gonna try and help with some basics. It always needed the Alexa app. It's not from Microsoft, as Amazon made the product. Now, if it's not connected to your own Amazon account and the Alexa app, it's not allowed to connect to your WiFi. You have to set it up in the app. :)

I now have reset my Amazon Alexa to factory settings, I have also unplugged my router and modem for five minutes, and I believe I have unregistered it from my Amazon account. I have looked everywhere for an answer to a question I have. Hopefully I can get some help here. I have echo's in my kids rooms. Each have playlists created on Apple music. When they ask Alexa to play their playlists it only play my playlists from Apple Music. How can Alexa recognize their playlists. The have given their playlists unique names but its not working. Question, in the communications tab, should the imported contacts list shouldn't both calls and messages share all of the same contacts so that you can either call or messages all of your contacts via Alexa? I've tried to uninstall the Alexa app and then reinstall it again, is there a solve for this issue. I asked one of my friends if they had the same issue, and what he told me was that both calls and messages had the same number of contacts. can you help? Thanks!

Hey Phil - Actually the messages side of the communication sends messages direct to Echo products. The only contacts that will show there are people who’s phone number and/or email have been linked to an Echo (and have enabled the features)

Swipe to the left on the main screen and you can delete the whole communication from the tab. You can't seem to delete individual messages, however.

I'm having a problem where when I'm setting up the device, it says choose my wifi but on the app, no networks are shown, it then goes to the home screen, and then the amazon dot says "Wifi isn't set up on this device" I can't find anything that helps online. I am seriously having trouble.

This might mean that your WiFi is incompatible BUT...I kinda doubt that's the case. It should be detecting other networks around you. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on on the device you're setting it up with too. Your phone. Otherwise, contact Amazon support on that one

You can either reuse the same WiFi credentials (name and password) and then your echo dot will reconnect, or you will have to re-set it up

I don’t know whether you know or not if you have got more than one Amazon speaker Put them all onto multi room then you only have to tell Alexa what you want to listen to Without having to say multi room all the time

I have a great computer and a crap phone that I can not afford to replace that has so much preinstalled on it that I can not down load applications to the phone. Can I set this up through my computer ? If I can set it up through my computer, can I still make phone calls through the dot ? I am getting older , live alone and have a heart condition. The main reason that I would justify spending money on this is if I could call 911 if I could not get to my phone. If your phone or computer dies, does the dot keep working ? Also, I have that lousy Cortana program on my Windows 10. Will it operate well with Alexa or would I need to disable Cortana ?

You won't need to worry about Cortana at all. :) The dot will keep working, and you'd use Alexa.amazon.com to set up and configure your Echo Dot. So yep, you can do it!

Try resetting the echo dot fully, and also try rebooting your wifi router. If it keeps doing it, come back tomorrow and then chat with Amazon support

You should talk to Amazon Support then. B1M being the name of the device's wifi is just a code so that's fine, but if you can't get it to connect, then you're going to need to chat with them.
