Thanks for this PSA about those horrible stickers, it will certainly reach a lot more than I can. I've actually been working on a series of videos about those stickers and other similar modern quack radioactive products for quite awhile now (since 2020) and the whole industry of those products goes pretty deep. Reading reviews on Amazon and other platforms is pretty horrific, plenty of people either have them fall apart after a lot of use or will intentionally take them apart or even apply them to their skin or worst of all their child's skin! But I can't really blame people for believing the fake advertising and marketing claims especially when sold on reputable platforms like Amazon and Walmart, not the usual Wish or Aliexpress. Some *spoilers* for my video when I eventually get around to finishing it: * They don't do jack to 5G, but are instead pointlessly radioactive, my opinion is to label them "intentionally malicious" as they claim to get rid of harmful radiation but instead emit it. * The radioactive powder is between the adhesive layer and the metallic layer, most of the radiation still penetrates the metallic layer. There is a decent amount of machinery required to manufacture those stickers, a lot of which is not fully automated and requires a lot of manual manipulation of the stickers between machines. * Amazon US by my research has well over AU$140,000 worth of those stickers in stock (ownership and liability is debated as many are 'third party sellers') and sells over AU$9,000 to AU$15,000 worth of them a week. The storage of those products in Amazon fulfillment centers is somewhat hazardous to workers however they are unlikely to be near the boxes for long enough but OSHA certainly would not approve. *If you are an Amazon US fulfillment center worker you should refuse to handle those products and notify your supervisor immediately and report the storage of those products to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission safety hotline* * I've analysed them myself with a small CsI gamma spectrometer and they contain a good bit of thorium as well as uranium (above the point you need a license to sell them), they aren't highly refined thorium but powdered rock from certain parts of China that are only slightly refined and sorted by activity. * The workers in China are the most at risk people from those products, I've got pictures from those rural factories and warehouses showing not just bags but pallets worth of this powder stored poorly with radiation levels well over 100 uSv/hr and of course workers are not told about the risks. * Their decay doesn't emit a lot of gamma but instead lots of alpha and beta so on a mica windowed pancake detector they give a much high count rate (1,000+ cpm per sticker). They're about as dangerous as a thoriated welding rod or two, however you don't carry thoriated welding rods around pointlessly with you all day. * I've sent some off to a lab for further traceable analysis with a much more expensive higher resolution gamma spectrometer to determine the absolute content of uranium and thorium and level of refinement which should make good content. I've spent way too much time and money on the videos to let them die (project folder is already 65 GiB) so I hope it will be a good watch when I'm finally done.

Honestly, besides all of that and all of the risks of direct exposure to radioactive materials of potent variety. The primary thing that also concerns me is the damage done to the devices with such stickers attached. Amazon Robotics could attach relatively inexpensive geiger counters to their warehouse robots and record levels of radioactivity throughout. They could then have alerts issued to supervisors should acceptable levels be exceeded, or they could have people regularly mine the data in the form of semi-automated reports. It's highly probable that those robots have telemetry data in a database, and adding a table for radioactivity data might not be too difficult. When an alert is issued, personnel could go to the appropriate location of the high measurement and narrow it down to the radioactive product(s). They could stamp this out if they really wanted to, but will Amazon expend the effort and expense? Some companies in my area employ geiger counters in their garbage trucks with alarms to alert workers. It seems completely doable.

There was a rather interesting incident involving a similar product at a nuclear site a few years back. I work in the nuclear industry and a common thing to have is a personnel contamination monitor to aid in people egressing contaminated areas think of basically a phone booth with an array of radiation detectors that is stepped into and the person waits while it monitors their whole body to ensure they do not have contamination on them. This saves a lot of time because it keeps radiation protection staff from having to survey them all out by hand using whatever hand held instrument we have available. This was not where I work but came through an industry wide safety share. Someone had one of the negative ion cards in their wallet and it ended up alarming this monitor. Fortunately they did not have any "real" contamination on them it was just the stupid card shooting beta and gamma radiation through their clothing at an alarmingly high level.

The problem is it's whack-a-mole. The sellers have no significant business presence in the west so there is little for the western authorities to go after, I've seen some people suggest making marketplace sites liable for the products sold through them, but I suspect the result of that would be that marketplaces located in the west would shut down and people would be driven to offshore marketplaces with even less customer protectoin.

Modern smoke detectors don’t even use isotopes anymore. I think they use laser diodes now.
@katydid50882 жыл бұрын
@@5roundsrapid263 This is correct. And for anyone wondering, the newer smoke detectors have better efficiency and detection thresholds s in the event of a fire it gives you a better chance at getting out alive. When one goes off, please remember to keep low to the ground and est door nobs with the back of your hand before opening. If it feels hot, block the doorjamb with something wet and try climbing out a window if that is possible. One of the cool but scary things about an active house fire is that doors can limit the oxygen supply sufficiently to the point it helps increase your chances of survival so long as it's fire retardants is good. Opening the door not only let's fresh O2 into the fire (accelerating it) but lets in smoke which will turn a room that was slightly hazy to complete pitch blackness. At that point, you have to feel your way out of the house and hope there are no weak spots (if you're on the upper floor). Another aside is, if you're in a room with a bunk bed or loft desk, pull whoever might be up there onto the floor(if they're not already awake) if you can. Alert fire and rescue that someone is on a top bunk. Don't try and drag them out. Leaving them on the floor increases their chance of survival when Fire and Rescue find their way in as the pocket of fresh air stays on the ground level anywhere from a foot or a little higher.

It's utterly bizarre.

The metallic disc stuck on the phone very likely decreases the effectiveness of the antenna. The phone will increase its transmitting power in order to compensate for that loss. So, you're not only getting the electromagnetic radiation in the radioactive range but also an increased level of the 4G/5G range.
