And killing off the experiences of meaningful interactions with fellow human beings - friendly, neighborly chit-chat, meeting new people, sharing a good word, etc. It’s about de-humanizing and devaluing the human experience, down to people being treated like “herd” animals channeled through gates, etc. No thanks. A bizillion glitches will happen with such checking-out - just as they so constantly happen with even the self-checkouts that are popular today. A human being needs to walk around, to try to keep up with all of the problems. It will probably be the same with this.

Trader Joe’s vows to never automate their stores. They say they value their employees too much to do it. They also provide benefits to all employees, including part-time employees. They also contribute to employee’s IRA’s even if the employee doesn’t contribute. I think there are some criteria that needs to be met first though. I know which store I’d rather support.

Walmart also had terrible pay. But, now the self-checkouts make it all fast to get in and out. They also now pay $15 an hour starting and my partner works there and it has greatly improved as a company since the days when I worked there. When I worked for Walmart, I made $5.15 an hour. Partner works for Walmart, he makes $15 an hour. Less people, less conflicts with co-workers and trips to HR. More money. I don't think it's all a bad thing. We socialize with people who WANT to socialize. Slave jobs need to go by the way side. We can get to know each other some other way like in a meet up group or at a restaurant. I don’t like it. I like to speak with a person. What if some is standing next to you and grabs a product and it ends up on my receipt?

If this is anything like the god-forsaken answering machine menu where you can't figure out how to get to a real person, they can keep their overpriced garbage.

I tend to grab a product to check the ingredients and nutritional info and most times put it back. Did you try doing this to see if it doesn’t count as something you bought?

People can buy online now. So, even don't need to go to supermarkets.

My nearby Whole Foods in Burbank charges on average 20 percent more on most common items. They could afford any loses at the salad bar if they went to an automated system like the one 8 miles away in Sherman Oaks.

There are people who have actual anxiety conditions. This sort of thing might actually trigger it for the reasons you state. But for them it may be a much bigger, multi day reaction. Plus not everyone HAS an Amazon account. There are still people who only have landlines and don't even have a smartphone. Not everyone is up to date with the tech.

I can see the benefits but as a retired checker I see workers going by the wayside and everything going robotic.What an un human world is coming our way. I will never do this
@myoldvhstapes2 жыл бұрын
There was a recent episode of Doctor Who based on this. A whole planet was an Amazon-like warehouse. 90% of the staff were robots but 10% were humans because saving "10% of jobs for people" was the law.

We need cashiers still tho because it provides options. I don’t want to make an Amazon account, so I’d need a Cashier, for example.

They still have a checkout lane to do things the regular way. The reviews state that the selection is massively reduced. I shopped at this place several times in the past since my chiro is across the street, but I think I'll give it a miss from now on.

Someone may have already brought this up, didn’t read all the comments: I’ve worked retail awhile and there are people who pick up an item, walk through the store and eventually decide they don’t want the item, placing it wherever (like milk in a freezer “someone will see this before it freezes” but no one does). Will they get charged for the item because they didn’t put it back where it belongs (they should!)? I can see a lot of chargebacks because people will complain about getting charged for something they didn’t leave the store with. To those complaining about getting rid of workers, apparently they didn’t hear about the increase in workers on the floor stocking, etc. they may be getting rid of cashiers but increased help in other areas! Duh! It’s like self checkouts, employee counts actually increase, not decrease. Cashiers decrease, but the machines require maintenance, people need help with self checkout, security increases. For every one cashier removed, two workers replace them. As a customer you just don’t physically see them.

Here in Cali, the homeless have free Obamaphones with internet. The store has a regular checkout lane where cash/cards can be used.

They waste tons of food, don’t sell “local” organic goods anymore (instead they are importing like Walmart) and now are laying off cashiers? No longer shopping at Whole Foods. Period.

What if you don’t have or want a smartphone? I am all for technology, however I am completely against forcing it on people. My mom wanted to order the newspaper because she’s not into technology yet they said your required to have an email…… WHAT?!?!?!

Bad idea! People need jobs. Families need income to survive. My grandfather worked for a produce store. He worked at the store to earn extra income to feed his large family. At the end of a work day, the store had unwanted food. He was given the unwanted produce to feed his large family. Oh well Grandpa, no extra income or food for you! Bad idea!!!!

Not mature yet. Every time I used it, I got under or over charged. Amazon offers no correction for under charge but would refund for over charge. I think some ppl will take advantage of this checkout method. For now I prefer to go thru manned line when shopping at Amazon Fresh.
