I own three, restored 1967 Volkswagen Beetles: Sedan, Sunroof and convertible. The convertible is valued at over $50k. Also, the Beetle in the 1974 "Worst storm ever" commercial at 23:40 is a 1967 Beetle, which sounds just terrific as it pulls away.

I drove a Rabbit (Golf) when I lived in Germany. I lived in the foothills of the Alps with snow taller than the car. It never gave me any problems. I liked it so well, I bought another one when I returned to the States.

Still regret selling my bug. Simple but great, reliable cars (the later versions like mine). Ok, tolerances aren't that tight, and you have to watch the body to not let it be eaten by rust, but it will get you from a to b and back with a smile on your face!

But the cost of old VW parts is beyond obscene especially in countries where there isn't third party parts available but only those made by VW like a muffler for $2800 for a T2 Transporter.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the VW beetle was just about the only car available to Americans who wanted something small and with good gas mileage. It’s not very well-known today but all those years ago The beetle was detested by many American men who could not stomach the idea of a car being sold just because it’s gas mileage was good and because it was affordable and efficient and reliable.

The air cooled engine was fine in the warmer months but in the cold winter the windshield defrost and heater sucked.
@gregatkinson72766 ай бұрын
When I was a kid (1960's) I remember my dad saying that they were air-cooled engine junk and that he would see them regularly along the highways with the "trunks up." LOL! Sure enough as I got older it proved true. I rode in a bug once and it was loud inside, crazy small, hard ride and everything was plastic. I noticed that even the doors were cardboard thin and knew for sure then that I would never EVER buy one! Funny how so many people have been duped by buying one of them...all because they looked different and was good on gas (when they ran.)
@ericknoblauch91955 ай бұрын
When I was a kid, I remember in 1972 when the Volkswagen Beetle surpassed the Ford Model T by taking the title as the best selling car of all time. That is how many people who were duped into buying one. Beetles at the time were everywhere. I also knew a mechanic who drove a 1956 Beetle. The odometer on his bug turned over from 99,999 miles back to 00,000 ten times. He drove that bug over 1,000,000 miles. The body sagged, and it looked rather beat up but still ran when everyone else had a car that would not start, or was at a service facility being repaired. That bug was one of the most reliable cars in our neighborhood at the time because it ran when everyone else had car troubles.
