Amber, Pamela Orr here. I just enrolled in From Idea to Official. It’s good so far. Thanks! I do have a question, however. On the Issues Research Questionnaire, you mention the questions: What is the scale? and What is the depth?I’m having a little difficulty wrapping my brain around the difference. Is ‘What is the scale?’ another way of asking ‘How big is it?’ (I.e. is it happening everywhere?) Is ‘What is the depth?’ Same as asking ‘How long has this been happening?’ Hope you can help.

Think of it like this - will you make a small difference for a lot of people, OR a big difference for a smaller number of people? For example, you could do an act of kindness for 1,000 people - changing 1,000 people's lives in a small way, OR buy a house for 10 people, making a HUGE difference but only for 10 people. Both angles have merit - it's all about what your organization is about!

Technically, the IRS requires that 3 officer positions be filled. States introduce requirements around the number of people who fill those positions. So, in some states like PA, you can have 1 person fill all 3 required positions.

Could my NPO own my For Profit?? Last year I opened a business that provides a service for Neurodiverse individuals. So many of the families that I serve said that they wished I had a 501c3 so I could receive donations. Soooo, now I have both. 😅I am just now getting to the point of working with my NPO. My For Profit is a Sole LLC . Richard mentioned that a NPO could own. haven’t really thought through what all of the advantages would be, if there are any. I’m thinking it could help streamline things??

Richard is definitely the go-to on that! If the nonprofit owned the business though, I'd be unclear on if you retain any ownership at all or if the business now falls to the Nonprofit's board as governing body.

Yes, you can remove board members. Usually your nonprofit's bylaws or articles will describe the process, if any, for how to do this. If the bylaws and articles are silent on board member removal, and they don't guarantee board terms or protection from removal, you'd have to look at your state's nonprofit laws for how board members are removed.
