That's awesome! If I could give one piece of advice - a grant is only as strong as the program/purpose it's about. Make sure the nonprofit you're supporting has strong language explaining the need and how they evaluate success!

You'll need to create some example grant proposals, or get some practice writing grants to build the portfolio if that's what you mean? :)

When you are starting out as a grant writer, how do you know what to charge?

I think it would be a combo/compromise between what you need to sustain yourself/be profitable as a grantwriting business, and what the market can afford. I'd take a look at other grantwriter's pricing to see examples, then consider scaling as you get a track record of success.
