I had this idea for a gag gift called "the box of unsettling noises." It's just an empty square decorative wood box where the bottom portion has a hidden compartment for a haptics device and a speaker. The haptic device would be a hammer that will occasionally make a loud thud once or twice a day. The speaker would play something that sounds like an airy laugh or crying.

Man EATEOT has some real competition, the second the note box started playing the entire experience became 5 times as haunting and the sense of dread that came with it just kept getting stronger as new sounds were added. This is some really good stuff!

Fantastic and incredibly atmospheric. I'm about to make something using a piezo mic and had a similar idea using springs and a music box. The rubber on the side of the box sounds so eerie. Inspirational.

Cool! And thanks for the description! Will have to try something like this! A lot of people are selling Noise Boxes at some pretty crazy prices. (Okay, I guess it's to cover their Time, but still.) I made myself a simple "proof of concept" yesterday by using the cardboard box from Amazon that the Piezo Pickup came in. :) (having a reverb pedal and an Amp definitely helps too, obviously. :) )

Beautiful! I am a director of school plays and will be building one of these for an upcoming Grimm’s Fairytales play around Halloween. A could questions… 1) Does that rubber mallet have a name? Is it a common percussion mallet or some other object being used for this? That plus the bow (plus your hands themselves) really does the trick. 2) Were you using anything other than reverb and looping pedals? How many looping tracks were you running at the most? On other, similar devises, having a way to create ongoing drones underscoring the rest really elevates this from a novelty sfx box to something that could actually create a complete sound to underscore a scene. I definitely want to employ that. I’ve now seen it done with the hand-cranked wheel and a pair of DC motors vibrating a single string. I like this option too.
@DaFake
@DaFake 2 ай бұрын
@@stevenslaughter8473 hi Steven! Thanks for your comment! To answer your questions, that rubber mallet is initially made for gongs , it's called Olli Hess e-Gong rubber:) Concerning the effects used in this video, if I remember correctly, I was only using a looper (Tensor) into a lo-fi reverb (Météore) into a feedback generator (freqOut). I don't remember the number of layers, I was overdubbing sounds while playing the box!

Absolutely amazing sounds, I have been wanting to build a box of sounds like this for a long time and I thank you for pushing me to finally do it. I normally do atmospheric guitar layer stuff but I've always had my eye on these types of boxes. Love the randomness of the tones and sounds, again, thank you. Can you suggest a Piezoelectric sensor ? I've wired them up to bowls and kalimba before, but never a wooden box with vibro/reso/spring attachments.
