Nice tutorial. A couple of tips: 1. If you're having trouble making the new UV map, you can use "Lightmap Pack" (a couple options down from "Unwrap"). This is designed for situations like this where the main UV re-uses texture areas repeatedly, but you need a map where every face can have unique information. The nice thing about lightmaps is that they don't require any human intervention. The whole model is just reduced to squares with proportional area and then fit into a square in the UV map. (Unity will even create lightmaps when you import an object, because it is required for all kinds of light baking). 2. You can bake the AO right in Blender if you don't have substance painter. You'll want a video tutorial because it's hard to explain in text. Roughly: Make a new material using a new image texture with "vector" set to your new UV map. In the shading tab, click on the image so it is active (outlined in white). This is how baking determines where the output goes (and is the least intuitive step, imo!). Then under render properties, choose "cycles", scroll down to bake and change type from "combined" to "ambient occlusion" and click "bake". The in the lower left of the shading panel (which is an "image editor") you can click the hamburger icon to save the image out.

I appreciate your comment and sharing knowledge! I've definitely been meaning to revisit this tutorial and include the blender baking, just been too busy finishing up college. I'm going to pin this, excellent explanation ❤️

To fix the "Grayscale" problem in photoshop, go to Image > Mode > RGB Color. This will convert the canvas to an RGB canvas. if multiple layers are present it will ask you to merge them, but you don't have to. If you are going from RGB to Grayscale it will warn you that color information will be lost (obviously). Hopefully this saves you an extra step in your process! Also if you want to save on processing (and if your texture will look fine with it) you can always bake the AO into the texture in substance painter. It would basically be faked AO, but would look the same. If the AO needs to be reactive, then it might be better to do it this way. I haven't gotten to play around with Poiyomi much so I don't know all its inner workings. Though I imagine AO is a pretty expensive rendering technique in VRchat.

Great tutorial and I make it work but the problem for me is when I have a hair that I have made on an avatar and I want to upgrade my avatar shading with ambient occulsion, I follow the tutorial and export my hair but since substance painter can't toggle between UV maps I am stuck with having to remove my already UV mapped hair and redo the normal UV map just to get the AO map to work in Substance painter because when i then re attach my hair to my avatar I only have the AO map since my normal UV map is gone because I had to delete it.

How do you export the texture? When I try to export, all i see is "Base Map, Mask Map, Normal, and Emissive" Perhaps I'm missing something? I'm using Substance Painter on Steam

Hey, what shader is best for hair with hair cards? Sorry if this isn't a good video to ask on
@velvet81172 жыл бұрын
@@velvet2925 any shader with transparency. Poiyomi is pretty much a standard but there are other shaders you could use.

Wouldn't it be better to set the decal to overlay rather than multiply?
