UPDATE: As of March 4th, 2023, the system continues to operate faithfully and accurately records conditions. BONUS, with the AWS Phone App, the weather reports and forecasts have been more accurate than our local weather forecasters. I'm not sure how that works, but my phone now has the best predictions I can find. I'm still a fan of this system.

For those of you who do not understand Lightning... Just because you put something on your roof does not mean that object will attract lightning to it. Please educate yourself. Also the recommend height above ground varies depending on your equipment. NWS recommend 4-6 ft AGL for temperature and humidity and 30ft AGL for anemometers. Radiation shields are in place to compensate for variables in installation locations. I have WS-2000 6 ft above my roof line mounted to the eve and still over the extending roof line. Every install is a compromise to some extent. Do what works best for you but you should always educate yourself and not just take someones word for it.
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing you thoughts. The caution about roof mounting acutally came from my insurance company. So I passed that on. If it's possibly going to impact insurance, I have a responsibility to pass that information on. If your insurance company says it's fine, then you're getting the green light. On the roof you also need to get back up there to change batteries when the time comes. I don't feel "uneducated". Thanks just the same.

Your review was excellent. Notes: As of July 2024, the wholesale price on Amazon is $530 which puts the retail price at about $760. That's a lot of money for a home weather station. Being battery powered, putting it on the house roof is not practical. My other concern is that it's 99% plastic which does not hold up for long periods in the direct sunshine.

Something to look out for is the setting on many stations for mph or kmph. Obviously if your expecting to read miles per hour and your station is set for kilometers per hour you will be disappointed and believe it to be inaccurate. Metric temperatures, degrees Celsius, are another setting that can cause confusion if you are expecting readings in Fahrenheit. Just something for folks to notice when setting up a weather station.

Appreciate the information. FYI, the batteries in the air speed ultrasonic head are for reserve back up only. The solar cell in most cases (barring snow cover) will power it. The placement of the the air speed sensor head below the uppermost plain of the rain gage will cause an erroneous speed (possibly direction) indication due to the blockage of clear airflow. A clear path should be available from all directions. I have struggled with this part of the installation, since the component parts are not designed to fit properly in this orientation (bad design)I have had to design and fabricate a mount that provides clearance and height requirements.
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
Runs on batteries exclusively at night, and on overcast days. But you're right, during periods of adequate illumination the solar panels provide enough power. I wish they had configured it to charge batteries as well.
@alext9540 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the clarification 🌞 When I talked to “Ambient” tech support, it sounded like there was some kind of internal battery or capacitor that would hold energy for night and solar eclipses. They didn’t seem too sure🤷🏻♂️ They kept referring to the 2 battery drawer as a backup for extended power loss i.e. snow cover etc. I’m going to try pulling the batteries at night to find out.

I have had a 2902 for the past 3 years. The interface with the app is fairly clunky, but the quality of the unit has been good. I also have the issue with my 2902 that you described with your old unit where it is way underestimating wind speeds. I had mine hail damaged which took out the anemometer. It was nice that Ambient Weather had reasonably priced replacement parts for it.

I highly doubt your 2902 was underreporting winds. I had mine on the same pole as my 5000 and they were nearly equal. Thing is, I have insane wind exposure. I have measured higher gusts on my 2902 than the nearby airport (I also have a 1400-IP and Davis VP2, all of my stations are close in wind). The only time a 2902 will underreport wind is when a gust is extremely brief (like 1-2 seconds) and/or when different wind currents cause the cups to essentially get confused and not ramp up as they should because different wind directions are hitting It at one time (idk how else to explain it but anyone who watches their cups during high wind likely knows exactly what I mean). Most assume their winds read low because almost nobody has the exposure an airport does. Not to mention most don’t measure wind at 33’ (that said, my stations top the local airport and are only 10’ high). You probably have poor exposure or trees, hill/ structures etc affecting your wind readings. Bearings could of course fail over time (Davis anemometers are known for this) but yeah from the box the 2902 anemometer is as good as any other cup design under $500-1000 lol

Does this sound right Fred found it online , If The Batteries Are Non-Rechargeable, What Does The Solar Panel Charge? The solar panel charges a super capacitor. This is a much more efficient design. If the super capacitor voltage drops too low due to night or extended cloud cover, the non-rechargeable batteries take over for the solar collector.
@FrederickDunn2 жыл бұрын
Oh, nice! That makes sense to me :) I creeped all over the Ambient Weather website, looking for more specific information on that solar panel. You're right, the battery is a backup when and if the solar panel isn't providing enough energy. They don't mention that "super capacitor", where did you get that information? Thanks for a great review. I have wanted a personal weather station for a while and I'm leaning toward this WS-5000 since it has no moving parts. Since you have had yours for a while, do you think the rain gauge is having any effect on the wind direction/speed since they are mounted right next to each other? I think that I will mount the anemometer unit above the rain cup so it would have the most unrestricted 'view' of the wind coming from any direction. Just wondering if you felt it would make a difference. Scott
@FrederickDunn Жыл бұрын
That's a great question, I don't think the proximity of the rain gauge is impacting the wind readings and I say that because of the direction of our prevailing winds. It's definitely a consideration if the rain gauge was the lead instrument but as shown, the wind anemometer gets the first take on air flow. :)

Have you had any problems in the winter with the anemometer freezing up? I live in Maine and currently have the WS 2000 but looking to make the change to the WS 5000. Only problem is I don’t want to have to run power to it so it won’t freeze up. Nice video as always. I bought and installed the Ambient Weather WS 2902C almost 2 months ago. Like your other devices, I’m skeptical of the wind readings on this unit but with out something like a wind anemometer who knows. I also wonder about the rain fall accuracy so I’m going to get a rain gauge just to compare. I wanted a unit so I had accurate historical data for my area. Rain and temperature data is what I’m most interested in to be able to compare how my bees did/do during the course of a year and hopefully to link data for a year to my hives successes or failures. The one short fall of the app and keeps it from being the go to weather app for me is the lack of radar data. It shows you a snap shot of the radar but if they added a time loop of about 2 hours like other weather apps then that would make it almost perfect. I like to be able to watch the storms as they come to have an idea of any impending doom 😂
@FrederickDunn2 жыл бұрын
The wind speed sensor with ultrasonic transducers is very accurate when things really pick up. If you want high wind alerts, the Atlas unit and other Accurite units completely let me down. You're right, we need a quality anemometer right next to the unit in order to validate wind speed, but in spring when we had a heavy weather event, my Atlas unit was reading gusts at 24-30 mph as trees were bending to the ground and others falling. I also have a hot-wire anemometer which is pricey. It is also giving faithful readings on par with the Ultrasonic unit. I agree, checking in with a larger doppler radar system for real-time storm tracking is valuable, and beyond this app.
@oneeyehives2 жыл бұрын
@@FrederickDunn agree with most except the app capability. Since ambient is essentially a citizen shared collection I would think there are enough units scattered around to make a prediction. Turns out I was wrong. That function does exist in the app. I found it yesterday. If you click on the map selector at the bottom of the app then you will see a couple options on the right side of the map. Not sure what the time lapse is but thought I’d pass that along to anyone interested or following the discussion.

Have you visited their website? That must be among their frequently asked questions. Here's how to store information on a micro SD card in your Ambient WS-5000 console: Before you begin: Make sure you have a micro SD card. It's recommended to format the micro SD card on your computer before using it with the console for optimal performance. Inserting the micro SD card: Locate the micro SD card slot on your console. It's usually on the side or back of the unit. Orient the micro SD card with the gold pins facing you. The slot is spring-loaded. Gently push the card in until it's flush with the console casing. It will click into place. Backing up data to the micro SD card: Power on your WS-5000 console. Navigate to the Settings menu. You can usually access it by pressing a dedicated "Settings" button or pressing the main menu button repeatedly. On some consoles, you can access the Factory settings by pressing the Settings button five times consecutively. Look for a menu option related to "Backup" or "Data Export." This might be under "System" or "Advanced Settings." You'll likely see an option to choose the data backup range. Here, you can select the specific year of data you want to back up. Locate the "Start Backup" function and confirm your selection. The console will display a progress bar while it backs up the data. Once the backup is complete, you can safely remove the micro SD card from the console.

Acurite stations are pretty average. I had one with a firmware bug and it also didn't give accurate readings on wind like the name might suggest.

Ok about the solar panel on top... Remember it measures solar radiation. That is what it is for. It is not solar powered. It uses batteries.

Thanks, this is from the company - "The solar panel on the Ambient Weather Station 5000 is used to charge the batteries that power the weather station. The weather station has a built-in battery backup that will keep it running for up to 24 hours in the event of a power outage. However, the solar panel can be used to keep the batteries topped up, so that the weather station can continue to operate even if there is no power for an extended period of time. The solar panel is also used to power the solar radiation sensor and UV sensor. These sensors measure the amount of solar radiation and ultraviolet light in the environment. This information can be used to track changes in the weather, such as the onset of a heat wave or a cold front. The solar panel is a convenient way to power the Ambient Weather Station 5000. It eliminates the need to change batteries regularly, and it can also help to extend the life of the batteries. Additionally, the solar panel is environmentally friendly, as it does not produce any emissions."
