Ambient Weather WS-5000 Observations

I recently purchased the Ambient WS-5000 Weather Station and wanted to pass along some information that I gathered on connecting to Weather Underground and some other observations that weren't mentioned in reviews that I have seen. I also wanted to pass along some information from Ambient Support that I didn't see mentioned anywhere else, such as there no longer being any Google Home integration available.

This is super helpful, especially the upload frequency on Wunderground. I've been considering buying a WS-5000 with a variety of different sensors. Thank you so much for the info!

I have the pool thermometer and the lightning sensor. Everything is very accurate so far. Haven't had any lightning yet to test that. I wish Ambient documented these changes so we wouldn't have to dig around for this information.

@@brian7m3 I’m glad to hear that everything is very accurate and working well. It helps me confirm that this is the right station to go with. I’ll be buying my WS-5000 pretty soon, and I will also be getting a probed thermometer (for measuring soil temperature in my garden), a pool thermometer, lightning sensor, outdoor PM2.5 air quality sensor, and a soil moisture sensor for my garden.

Love my 5000, it’s my favorite station I own (1400-IP, 2902, and Davis VP2 6153 are my others). The 1400 is 8 years old! My climate is probably not as harsh as some though, I personally expect at least 4-5 years from my budget stations. Thankfully you can individually replace the most failure-prone parts like the thermo/hygro. The PM2.5 is decent, but I will say now you might want to save for a Purple Air if you want something much better. I’ve owned both, the AW is a nice entry option for sure but I paid $65 for mine can’t believe how high the price rose over the years. That’s everything though

Thanks for the video, I too just changed from an old Davis to the WS5000, mostly because the new Davis was just too expensive. I wanted to address the "no battery backup issue" I noticed that you have a memory card installed (so do I) which is why you are not losing any data when the power goes off but the reason I find it annoying not having battery backup is because the most common time for a power outage is during a storm, therefore during a rain storm when I loose power I am not recording rainfall so my daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly rain data is not accurate and that frustrates me immensely. To get around this issue I purchased the cheapest UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) and now I have battery backup, but it would have been better if Ambient Weather would have just designed the console with battery backup like Davis does. Another annoying issue is with the signal strength or (data refresh rate) the temp, wind, humidity sensor array seems to have a much lower signal strength than the rain sensor even when mounted on the same weather mast. I have actually purchased and installed two WS5000 units for different locations and they both perform the same, the sensor array signal strength is always lower than the rain sensor, which is very frustrating.

LOVE my AW products. My 1400-IP is 8 years old and going strong. Also, many of us call them “Acuwrong” lol the Atlas can be decent but it seems pretty hard to get accurate daytime temps with Acurites.

I never knew you could alter the upload rate. By default, my 2902 and 5000 both update on WU in between 10-20 seconds (actually count rather than look at what WU claims, sometimes it’s less time than you think).

Brian, excellent info in this video. I just ordered a WS-5000 so I'm trying to learn as much as possible before the equipment arrives. One comment; I noticed you have a microSD card installed, do you think that your info is being stored on the SD card and that is why you don't loose any data when you unplug the console? Maybe the other people don't have a memory card installed. Scott

Hello, the SD card is only used to store a manually made backup of your data in a CSV format. There is an option in the console to do this. I don't think it has anything to do with the configuration data in the console.

Ok, that makes sense. So the memory card is used to export the data to another computer, rather than keeping data points in memory onboard during regular use. @@brian7m3

At least ur sun rise, sun set graphics are working. Tried several settings changes and the little sun won't even show. My moon phase doesn't change either.

I'm new to this technology so please forgive my possibly silly question. Why do I want to update my local weather data to Weather Underground as fast as 16 seconds? It seems 5 minutes is plenty often.

Thank you for the in-depth breakdown. I want a unit I can tie into APRS/Ham Radio. In regards to 'lost data', I assume the data is' lost' while the display unit is powered down. You could easily disprove this by leaving it unplugged for 30 minutes and see if there is a lack of reported data in your historicals. I've looked at Davis data sets and they seem to bottom out at -40*F. I'm in Interior Alaska. We are expecting our annual cold snap, and we will be below that again this week. I need to see if Ambient can go lower on temps.

I live in Europe and got the Garni branded one. The only thing they could do to make it super in stead of great is shipping it with a larger display.

@ Brian7m3, thanks for taking the time to do this informative video. Im really interested to buy ambient brand weather station like the one you showed. But I am more interested in the "ALERTS" section of the settings. Can I set a rain drop threshold to zero for, lets say, a period of 4 weeks or 1 month to 3 months so that it sends me an alert to indicate a severe drought and also if the wind speed exceeds a certain threshold so that it alerts me if there is strong wind and I should not venture out to sea. And can this system be setup in a remote location and linked up to the internet so that I can monitor the weather from another location? I actually need to setup a couple of Ambient WS-5000 and be able to remotely monitor the weather recorded from the various locations.Please help me understand what works and what doesn't work. Thanks in advance

They’re not dropping Awnet, it’s mandatory for the 2902 A/B/C models. But can be (and should be) used for the 2000/5000 as well. The 2902D they added a different means to connect so I think that’s what they meant. I will always use Awnet

I use AWnet too. There is certain info that you can only get in there, such as pool temperature and additional sensors. It's also helpful to see the information posted in their format in addition to Wunderground.
