As a black man, I’m happy that a queen found a man that stands by her no matter what. I try to tell young black girls who want to go looking for a man in Korea, that the circumstances aren’t always easy. He’s a good man because many Korean men would have caved by now and dumped you just to please his parents. That’s just their culture. Some Korean parents trust their kids choice on whoever they bring home but this is a rare case thats far in between. You guys really only need each other. His life is not his parent’s. Either they will come around or they won’t. I also understand that the concept of black people is still new for many Korean people(I mean them actually seeing us as people outside of entertainment.) but this still isn’t grounds for them to be disrespectful. At the end of the day, you guys just have to keep on with your lives and be happy.

I haven't dated outside my race since high school but because I have a huge crush 😃 on Donnie Yen 😹 and Lichao(chinese) On KZbin, and because I believe that character is more important than race or Money, I got dragged on fb. My mother did something similar the first time I brought home a Latina to meet my mum. She gave me a hard time (I'm Japanese-American) how I "needed" to find a proper traditional Japanese girl and so on and so forth being pretty racists. Most of my family was doing the same thing and finally I just lost my temper and yelled at a family event: "You all can F-OFF and NO ONE will tell who I can love!!!!" Yeah they left me alone after that. Years later my mum (who is now elderly) told me she no longer cares what kind of girl I bring home as long as she has a functioning uterus. I was like "Message received. I know what your saying. You want grand children before you pass away.."

I definitely understood what sanghoon is currently going through with his family. I dated a second generation chinese American throughout high school up until I was 20 and the whole time his family never liked me. I tried learning some of the cuisine, helping out whenever there was a need but it always felt like I was never good enough. Even his mother told me my black skin was a curse to their family. It honestly was too much for me and I became really depressed so I’m really glad when I see AMBW couples that managed to make it work. I really hope that his family can learn to accept the relationship and cherish you Bea ❤️❤️

It's sad how we must live a life where people make us feel like we need to be apologetic for the color of our skin. The same way no one chose to be White or fair-skinned, we did not choose to be black. Being from a country that was only freed from a racist government only 26 years ago (South Africa), you can imagine how triggering this was. With that said, stay strong. I hope that you will have the courage to continue having each other's support and that you will not succumb to the pressure. I also hope Sanghoon continues being a good son to his family, regardless of their racism (Truthfully I do not want Bea to be blamed for taking Sanghoon away or anything like that) so for every hate they give, show them kindness. It’s sad to see or hear that a biracial couple experience racism. I was born in Seoul, in the late fifties to a young Korean women. I am biracial. My birth mother took me SDA orphanage because she was experiencing difficulties (racism). I do not hate her for taking me there. I appreciate her effort to make sure I was safe and to see that I would have a loving and caring family. During that time seeing people of a different color and culture was not excepted, children of mixed race would suffer harm or death. I was fortunate to be adopted by an American couple who were both of mixed race. My mother was Irish and American Indian and my father was American Indian and African American. I did not find out that I was adopted until I was an adult. With that being said, I actually experienced the same thing from my mother. I met someone who was a lot darker complexion than myself and her. I was told that I should not be with him because black men were mean and abusive. I told my mother that as much as I love her, she did not have the right to tell me who I can love. I didn’t say it to her in nasty or hurtful way. It took awhile for her to come around (6 years ) to accepting him. I understand that hearing all those the things they think are bad are hurtful. I want both of you to approach them with great love each time you talk or visit them. I recommend more visiting than talking on the phone, so that they are able to see the sincerity in your relationship. Let them know that they are unable to break your chain of LOVE. I will keep you guys in my prayers and speak to the universe to help you and your families. Always remember to speak and be positive ALL the time. So note doubt enter your relationship. Never use the word hope, it has a crack in it for doubt to enter. Strength... Acceptance... Endurance.... BLESSINGS and Never Ending LOVE for ALL. Sending LOVE to you. ❤️❤️

I was living in Seoul for 5 years and have dated some Korean guys. They will usually consider a lot of stuffs before they date foreigners. Cos they have to go through that one hard step which is their parents. Korea is a one race country so it will take some time for them to accept non Korean. I had a similiar situation when I was in high school in NYC. A Tawainese guy liked me and I liked him. He was very nice to me and he was in 12th grade while I was in the 11th grade. lolol Despite the one grade difference - I was 16 and he was 19!! He was older due to being left back in grade school due to he came to this country as well as the language barrier kept him back. All the girls liked him, he was popular and very cute. :) The guys liked him and he played basketball and football. The basketballers would help him on his basketball techniques and in turn he would tutor them in Math. It was only his mother and sister here in the United States. His father was back in Taiwan. No other relatives in the U.S.. So his mother relied and depended on him heavily. He told his mother about me and the mother was upset. I told him I understand and that we would just hang out only. We never had sex. He was very attentive and good to me!! I made the decision that we would only be friends because you only have your mother & sister. If you're not speaking with her due to mother's opinion - you have no one else...but my family. That's not fair for him or his family. He was heartbroken but it was for the best.

Hey guys, get ready for another long post. First, I want to say thank you for sharing your story. I have watched other AMBW couples, and most (not all) have been in similar situations, so while it is sad, I want you guys to know that you are not alone. Second, while I appreciate the funny cultural videos that you guys do, I appreciate these videos even more because they provide a real in-depth insight to what goes on with interracial couples, and how the world views black people. I won't touch too much on this topic because I have talked about it in another video. Third, Sanghoon, I am glad that you stuck up for not only Bea but yourself as well which, I can tell from your emotional state was very hard. Like you said why should you have to defend yourself to anyone; especially your family. Here are my thoughts on the matter. I think your family means well, but they are going about things the wrong way. I myself come from a conservative black family in which I have had numerous conversations about the possibility of dating outside my race in which it is very much so looked down upon from my older relatives. As I have gotten older, and seen the world from an adult perspective, I realize they are just trying to protect me. My great grandparents lived through slavery, my grandmother lived through segregation, and my mother was born at the tail end of segregation where the beginning of the underlying notes of racism in the governmental system began. I now understand that from their perspective, they want me to date someone who will understand my struggles as a black women and I think the same goes for your parents Sanghoon. I think your parent's biggest fear is that maybe Bea won't understand your struggles as a Korean male and may eventually leave you or worse use you. Again, the fear is reasonable, but the way their going about handling that fear is totally wrong. I think what your family needs to realize is that whether your dating a black woman or a Korean women the chances of having a successful or a failed relationship are the same. It doesn't matter about race or culture. What matters is how committed you are to each other. Like you said you love her and want to marry her. That is what is most important. This is a continuous battle that both of us will have to fight. At the end of the day, my family wants me to be happy, and I will be with whoever I choose in the future no matter the race or culture, and I know so will you guys. Lastly, I want you to know that I believe love is about feeling safe, being able to be vulnerable with someone, and feeling secure with that person. Marriage to a specific person means that your partner is your home away from home. Sanghoon, you found your home, so don't let her go. Love you guys!!!!

awww thank you and wow!! i didnt know there was a part of the black american community who thought this way. I can understand the comfort of wanting someone who understands your struggles and community, but i think there is also a danger in limiting yourself to only people who have the same exact experiences as you, and are having the same conversations. it means the entire community can't grow beyond their circle. i think that applies to the black american community as well as the korean one. I do see why someone wouldn't want that in a partnet though. Both of us have to work on educating eachother and have both said misguided things even some that could be potentially seen as racist. we just had to remind ourselves that "the person in front of me loves me and doesn't know that's not the right perspective but wants to learn" it takes a lot of patience. @@beaandsanghoon Your welcome! As I stated before, I live in a state that is 75% white, 10-15% black, and the rest is other. My grandparents and my aunts and uncles grew up in the time of segregation. For those who don't know, there was a period of time where blacks were legally not allowed to enter public places that whites inhabited. As a result, my older relatives never interacted with anyone other than black people because this was the norm. Even up until 1959 it was illegal for black people to marry white people. That being said it was always an unspoken rule in my house that you shouldn't be dating outside your race because this was the environment that my entire family had grown up in. Therefore, their reasoning was always that black was good and anything other was bad. In fact, I still remember my mom telling me stories of how when she moved across town when segregation was over into an all white neighborhood how the white people would completely terrorize their family by writing racial slurs on their property, bullying them, and even pouring sugar in their gas tank when they finally got a car. That being said, I can understand where they are coming from. However, they need to realize that the world is changing and so people's mindsets are changing with it. The world has a lot of issues especially in regards to racism. However, it's still stands that there are a lot of things that have changed in the past 20 to 30 years. I'm not saying these things in order to be rude or talk badly about my family. I just think that there's a lot of things that me and my sister will do that they won't understand based on the time that we were born into. I still get comments such as "you don't want to date a black man?" when I'm talking about other people that I find attractive that aren't black. And, I must admit that in the moment it annoys me that I have to defend myself to anyone even though I have never even dated a person before. However, I also have to take a step back and look at the facts and look at the environments that both of us have grown up in. I went to school that had a population of 75% white students. As a result, I can see things differently than they can. I never had any black friends unlike my family. Thus, I can see the good and the bad habits of white people. As I stated before, this is going to be something that we're going to have to have continuous discussions about. However, in the end I know that they want me to be happy. In fact, I talked to my mom about it and she says I don't care who you date as long as you find someone that makes you happy and treats you well. This is why I state that this is the most important. Sanghoon I'm not trying to sugarcoat your family's racist tendencies. I also think that it's disgusting the way that they've been acting. I just think that the reasons behind it are maybe a little bit deeper then they are just racist. I don't know maybe this is just me trying to be optimistic. In the end, it's your life and you guys have found happiness with each other, so keep fighting for that happiness. Thanks for the response!

Older people are realy recluent to change their mind and atitude especialy if they come from a more conservative country. Mabye a honest heart to heart conversation may healp you with your family. Just tell them that their words and atitude hurt you deeply and in turn hurt your girlfriend. Sometimes honesty can help. Sometimes because of bad stereotypes some people belive the worst about black people. Black people are human bings like the rest of us and deserve respect. As a metter of fact wath is important is the heart and personality of someone not the color of their skin. I know someone that had to realy cut ties with her family for a few months because they did not aprove of her marriage to a muslim man evan if the man was decent, hard working and loved their daughter.

God it was so sad to listen to your experiences ㅠㅠ I'm pretty lucky because Inho's parents are so accepting but his dad is also pretty old fashioned and told me he couldn't even think of having a foreigner in his family. Thankfully he changed his mind when Inho and me started dating... I know it's not even comparable to your situation but I've heard so many stories about Korean families not accepting a foreigner... @@alexisf22 I don't want to deminish what Bea is going through because it's very different but I heard a lot of stories of my white friends being hated by their Korean bf's families, even getting slapped. My (korean) ex was also so ashamed of dating a foreigner he didn't want to tell his parents (who were very traditional) about me and even tried to hide from friends he saw on the street when we were together. It definitely stems from something different with black girls- rasizm and prejudices and with white girls it's most likely the need to keep the 'pure korean bloodline' and not wanting a foreigner in the family but it definitely happenes (less now than before tho)

It may sound weird to you because the stereotype is that old asian men are patriarchal but often the reality is moms often run these families and are far more likely to accept "non-asian" son-in-laws than daughter-in-laws. Korean girls with white boyfriends are also looked down upon in the society in Korea but that is a different thing,

I most definitely feel this. My biological father is against me being in a relationship like this one and for me, I had zero issue just getting rid of him in my life. But it’s not like we had a close relationship anyways, so I cannot understand your immediate family not respecting you, or your relationship. I definitely admire your relationship and his strength to stand up for love at the cost of his family. Its not easy in Asian cultures at all! Truly, these types of relationships have to happen, so that those of the older generations, whether korean or otherwise, will realize that the world is changing and not as large as it used to be. People are travelling around the world and meeting people if other cultures. Social media also encourages interactions between people, do there is going to have to be a change in the thinking of the older generation, because love dies not take into account, skin color or race. You're a lovely couple. I pray Sanghoon's parents will eventually come around, because it will be their loss. Bea's family already loves him, do he's gained a family.
