Torqueflite transmissions are awesome. The 727 is my favorite transmission. 3 gears is all you get, all you need. No overdrive to fail like on later Chrysler transmissions. For two years Chrysler used the 727 behind the Cummins diesel in their heavy duty trucks. This engine and transmission combo was slow, but extremely stout. A real workhorse of a combo. Depending on gearing and how the truck was loaded they would top out at 70 mph, but it would get you where you were going and it would keep going.

People sure do love this transmission, and AMC used plenty of them over the years... Thanks for watching!

I remember when the Eagle 4xr came out. I really liked it, but couldn't afford a new car. I sure wish I still had a few of my past cars...1964 Ford Galaxie 500, 1966 Dodge Coronet, 1973 Olds Delta 88 Royale convertible, 1978 and 79 Buick Electra Limited. The darn things cost a fortune now. But, of all of mine, grandpa had, when I was young, a 1957 Dodge Coronet with the D500 package. I love your Ambassador...it's cool.

Man, I love AMC so much. Even though they never at any point had enough capital to fully develop their cars, they still gave it their best shot through intelligent choices and stouthearted determination. I'm pleased to see you have a documentary going on for the underappreciated marque, as my family has had a good experience with it.

Really loving this series. You've got such a great personality, one that's really refreshing for an automotive journalist(or should I say automotive historian), and a truly amazing car. I'd love to see a through tour of the car, where you go over all the little features of it, and give us an idea of what it'd be like to own and operate a '72 Ambassador; things like how roomy the trunk is, how effective the wipers are, etc. As always, I look forward to your next videos!

About Chrysler Torqueflite (AMC Torque Command, 1972 &ff), vs the Borg-Warner (AMC Shift Command, to 1971). I grew up in Kenosha, and rode in many of these cars, and owned one back in the day. My impression of the Borg-Warner was it had a more efficient torque converter. Shifts were accompanied by a pronounced nudge and a sharp change in engine RPMs. The transmission was very reluctant to downshift though unless you floored the throttle. And, if you drove knowing the characteristics (deep throttle to keep it in 2nd while getting it up to speed, then letting off), it was even a bit slow to upshift. So, I think this transmission would give better MPGs in normal driving but with the cost of being annoying when you wanted any sort of quick responsiveness. And, I think this transmission required periodic band adjustments but not sure about that. The Torqueflite was very responsive in shifting, so when you gave it enough throttle (without flooring it) it would downshift as desired, quickly and smoothly. It upshifted early if you were 'trundling along'. It was very smooth, the nudge on upshifting was minimal. A very pleasant transmission for driving. Probably cost a bit of mpg vs. the Borg-Warner, not sure. I think this didn't require periodic band adjustments but not sure about that.
@AutoMoments6 жыл бұрын
Interesting... Thanks for the info! We've talked to AMC owners who like both, but generally the Torqueflite seems more popular. The cost probably had a lot to do with it, too. Maybe Chrysler gave AMC a better deal than Borg-Warner. Thanks for watching our channel!
@boggy76656 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe! I enjoy your channel & it's great to see you covering the cars and company that many of my friends and their parents drove and worked for. I think the Shift Command was descended from the 1950s-era Ford-o-Matic, and it was just outclassed by the Turbo-Hydramatic and the Torqueflite. It was noticeably less refined and responsive. I don't know, but that's my guess about why AMC changed. I think the Torqueflite just gave a vastly better driving experience, for most people anyway. They might have asked Borg-Warner to update the Shift Command, but B-W likely told them they couldn't afford to do it on AMC's volume.
@8avexp4 жыл бұрын
@@boggy7665 AMC offered a Flash-o-matic at one time. Our '62 Rambler Classic station wagon had a pushbutton Flash-o-Matic. It still had a reversing valve that enabled push starting. By 1966 or 1967, that feature was gone. Shift Command was introduced in 1967, I believe.

Never drove an Ambassador, but did drive a Matador with a 360 a lot. Very solid feeling car. When I decided on an old car as a driver, I picked a 1995 Oldsmobile 98. It looks, drives, rides and sounds like a big car from the 1970s, but has: Antilock brakes; crush zones and door protection; rack & pinion steering; automatic a/c; 4-speed electronically controlled transmission; four wheel independent suspension; airbags; velour seats; multiadjustable seats and front wheel drive.

I know I'm seeing this six months after you published it, but I had to comment. Great vlog series! I was a big AMC fan back in the 70's and when I took driver's ed in 1976, our school driver's ed car was a 1972 AMC Ambassador! I was so excited to be able to finally drive one. On our first driving day in public, there was the teacher and two other students besides myself. I was second in line to drive after this girl. She wasn't experienced at all, so the teacher had her only drive around in the school parking lot. We were expecting a new replacement car within a couple weeks or so, so his extra brake pedal had been removed to fit into the new car, which was a new for '77 Pontiac Catalina. Anyway, while driving around in the school parking lot, the girl panicked during one of her big loop arounds and hit the gas instead of the brake to slow down. She ended up jumping over the curb and we crashed into the side of the gymnasium! Consequently, I never got to drive the Ambassador because she ended up totaling it out! I was so disappointed that I never got to drive the Ambassador.
@AutoMoments5 жыл бұрын
Awwww, that's too bad! AMC made an advertisement in the late 60s saying that more driver's ed programs chose AMC cars than anything else, because they were durable and held up to abuse. Typically the AMC Rebel or Matador were chosen because they were cheaper than an Ambassador. Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our other videos!

I certainly agree with your comments on underdog cars. I'm a big fan of the Austin Allegro for one yet every day I get people coming up to me like "but top gear says it's crap, therefore it's crap. never seen one, never driven one, but I know they're crap" & now I have just bought a 1985 Talbot Alpine, which is a true underdog car, launched in 1975 as the Chrysler Alpine/Simca 1307, it was awarded Euro car of the year in 1976 & the French loved it but in the UK, not so much. It was leagues ahead of the competition in the UK but it only ever sold modestly & never reached any form of cult status so nobody really tried to preserve them & true to form, my Talbot Alpine Minx is one of only three cars left in the UK. I generally dislike the typical cliches. Oh, you're a car enthusiast? You HAVE to have a Nissan GTR or you HAVE to have a BMW M3. I'm sick of all the general pop-car-culture channels on KZbin that do nothing but recite the same nonsense over & over & just go on & on about drifting, high-performance cars & bodykits. I like your Ambassador because it's a modest old car. It doesn't want to drift or burn rubber, it wants to plod along at it's own pace & I love that about a car. Also to me, being a British based enthusiast, a channel like this holds more interest to me as it's about cars that Americans actually bought, not everybody had Corvettes or Mustangs so it's so refreshing to me. You've definitely earned this subscriber

It is always good to hear from our friends in other lands. The British seem to have an especially fun view of motoring. I like the names, too. If I were building a British car today, I'd like to name it the Bulwark Steadfast or something. My Dad used to chuckle at the Morris Minor. "Only the British', he would say, "would name a car Minor." In the US that car would probably be called the Morris Firestorm or some such. Hang in there, please, and enjoy what appeals to you. In my view that is what it means to be a "car guy."

You provide an honest, unbiased approach to the cars you review. Finally, I find the Pontiac Azteck atttractive and well laid out. I love AMC cars. I have owned a number of them (including a 1970 Ambassador 2 door hardtop). AMC was a very special company that always built good cars. They had a number of quality features that no other cars had at the time. They also had the best warranty in the business. They were rugged and tended to last longer than average too. This is not to say they were perfect. But they were better than people generally knew. Much of the time they are misrepresented and under appreciated by younger, newer enthusiasts because they cannot see the cars in the context of the time when they were new. AMC tried to compete by offering better value than the big three. It is true that they could not go head to head in the restyling game. So it could be argued that they tried to make their cars better to win buyer loyalty. That was their advertising scheme of 1972. "We back them better because we build them better". I should like to point out that better than average quality was a Nash and Hudson tradition before AMC was formed. It should also be known that George Mason and George Romney were highly moral men - good guys that wanted the public to have a better "mouse trap". I just wish that AMC had not died. It is good to see people appreciate them now. The cars and the company deserve it.

I didn't know Weather Eye was an actual air conditioning system. Reading more I see it had advantages over GM and Ford air conditioning systems and was much lighter. Nash engineers always considered weight an enemy to economy. As a kid Metropolitans, Studebakers, Hudsons, Ramblers were a common sight. Recently at an auto show I saw a Rambler station wagon with a factory compressed air suspension system, a really great idea for towing campers or boats on those family summer vacations.

Some corrections: Weather Eye was not part of the A/C System nor was it the name for the A/C system. It was the name Nash gave the heating and defrosting system back in the 1930s. It was the first system to pressurize the cabin and was used on both air conditioned and non-air conditioned cars.

The old real wooden body station wagons were the most expensive models to purchase. That is why there was an element of prestige to owning a faux wood station wagon in later decades. Fake wood trim on the interior starting in the 1960's on US cars was because it lended a hint of Rolls Royce style luxury. Rolls Royce featured real wood trim inside and so did many Mercedes Benz cars as well as other European luxury cars. But cars like the Chrysler Imperial and several Pontiac models used real wood veneer trim inside. Fake or real - it just to add a touch of class to the look instead of something plain. Nash was not a pioneer with auto air conditioning. In fact Nash was one of the later ones to offer AC. What Nash did pioneer was an automotive air conditioning system that was all in the front of the car ( under the hood and under the dash ). Every other auto maker to offer AC at the time placed the evaporator in the trunk. Those are not chrome window guards. Those are Vent Shades. As well as being small sun shades they also allowed the door windows to lowered partially while keeping rain out.

If this were a 1967 or 1968 Ambassador, you could have a sign that said "George Romney for President." How fitting would that be.

Now that would be pretty cool! Thanks for watching!

Just discovered your channel it's really cool. Would you ever consider running the Ambassador through the same test MotorWeek does with their new car. 0 to 60 braking Etc?

As much as I would love to do that, I don't have access to a closed racetrack to safely do these tests. But it would be fun!

Were power windows and/or door locks an option? I've never seen them on any AMC vehicles until the 80s.
@AutoMoments5 жыл бұрын
Yes, there were Ambassadors from this era with power windows. We've seen several on eBay/Craiglist over the years. But apparently it's not super common.

By the way, as far as a Studebaker vlog...Jay Leno has a few. Email him, tell him what is on your mind, and ask him if he knows someone in your area who may be able to help you. Leno is a good man...I bet he can give you some contacts. The Studebaker Club may be able to help you, too.

We doubt Leno would answer any of our emails; he's probably too busy for us. But we have already met several Studebaker owners, so there may be a video in the future... Thanks for watching!

Wasn't AMC using GM TH400 transmissions up to '78, or was that just for the Jeeps with v8's?
@codymoncrief84786 жыл бұрын
@@AutoMoments It looks so, I went ahead and did some serious digging. (Long read incoming!) According to my shop manuals, '73 through mid-'78 Jeeps with 304, 360, and 401 engines had TH400's. Mid '78 ('79 new model year), they switched to torqueflites as standard equip, the TH400 (and the accompanying quadra-trac) was fully phased out by '79. Interestingly, most, if not all AMC TH400's (custom bell housing shape) were set up for the old 8-bolt trans pump, which would indicate it was variable-stall 400 from the late 60's. GM stopped making variable stalls in ~1969, so it is likely a carried-over design feature from Kaiser jeeps, since some did have variable-stall 400's as factory transmissions, and if I'm not mistaken, some had AMC v8's too. Maybe they were simply using left-over castings from the Kaiser years, and finally ran out in '78. The TH400 would have been overkill for a family car, but perfect for a heavy duty 4x4 truck.

Except for maybe 1974, I’m not sure the statement that the early ‘70s was an era that AMC sold less and less Ambassadors every year is very accurate. For ‘71, AMC moved 41,692 Ambassadors, which was almost as many as they sold Matadors (43,325), and way more than the 26,866 Javelins they sold. For ‘72, Ambassador sales grew to 44,364, only 10k fewer than they sold Matadors, and 18k more than they sold ‘72 Javelins. For 1973, Ambassador sales rose again to 47,294 and Matador sales fell to 52,532 while only 30,902 Javelins were sold. It wasn’t until 1974 that the Ambassador really sank, but that was the gas crisis, and even when you compare sedan and wagon sales to the related ‘74 Matador, the Ambassador wasn’t very far behind it. I think it was a mistake to kill the Ambassador. Since AMC launched the completely different-looking Matador Coupe in 1974, I think they should have killed the Matador sedan and wagon and dropped the Ambassador to the 118” wheelbase instead and kept it luxurious. This was the era of Mercedes-styled Granadas, after all. At the time, it was the longest-running model nameplate in the auto industry. I did the math, and while 1971-73 Ambassador sales were lower than they’d been from 65-70, 71-73 sales were actually much higher than 1954-64. 73, 72, 71, and 74 were the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 13th best Ambassador sales years in the 21 years it was marketed it post AMC merger. Why do you think the more profitable Ambassador was killed rather than the Matador sedans and wagons, which were much cheaper but sold barely any better?
@AutoMoments6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that was a mistake on our part. Ambassador sales did increase from 71-73. That was poor research, and we apologize. The point Joe was trying to make was, compared to Ambassador sales in 1969 (76,194) and 1970 (59,941), the 71-73 sales were significantly less. Although we don't know why, AMC continued to cut options and trim levels on the Ambassador, and their marketing campaigns put much more emphasis on their other products (Hornet, Gremlin, etc.) Ambassador was clearly not a priority. Personally, we agree with you that it was a mistake to kill the Ambassador. AMC should have continued updating the 1974 refresh and kept selling it instead of the Matador sedan / wagon. The only reason we can think for ending the Ambassador was to reduce manufacturing complexity at the plant, since it used a difference sized wheelbase. Pat Foster does a much better job of covering all these details in his article "Recalling an Ambassador" in the August 2017 issue of Collectable Automobile magazine. It's definitely worth reading. Thanks for watching, and we'll do a better job on our numbers in the next video!
@judethaddaeus97426 жыл бұрын
I will definitely read Foster's piece. Thanks for the recommendation. A couple of points... for 1972, AMC cut trim levels across the board. Gremlins were all 4-passenger cars, Hornets were all SST's, Matador had been down to 1 series since it debuted in '71, base Javelins were gone, as were Ambassador DPL's. By 1972, the Ambassador came standard with a V8 and added more standard equipment along the way. In '72, it was all part of their modernization program where manual transmissions became all-synchro, electric wipers became standard (as opposed to vaccum), brakes were upgraded, and the more maintenance-free, bulletproof Torqueflite replaced the BW automatic. AMC cut base models and launched the Buyer Protection Plan in order to sell the customer on greater value and content. The Ambassador line was no different that year. And even though the '72 Ambassador was down to SST and Brougham for 1972, sales still increased over '71. They increased again in '73 when AMC cut the SST line, leaving just the Brougham series, which meant that Ambassadors ended up with even more standard equipment in '73 than '72. And AMC was still running TV commercials for the '73 Ambassador (kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4GzloGKjMqradU), so through the '73 model year, it seems like they had faith in it.

I think the reason ( or one of the reasons) that people overlook the car, it’s a nice looking, but pretty generic looking. If it was, the Matador coupe, or a Javelin . But it looks more like an old Chrysler to a lot of people. And they have no knowledge of AMC. Personally I’m more a Studebaker person but I can certainly appreciate AMC.
