It's great to see two old warriors of the late sixties, especially of those you would normally consider "muscle car" running down the road together and looking so great knowing that you've had your artistic hands on both of them just makes it that much better. I can imangine both of these cars being rivals of each other when piloted by some over zealous teenagers trying to impress their girlfriend's, mutual friends and ultimately, themselves.

I know this is rather late, but I just stumbled across this Ambassador DPL story, and just like slowing down to see a gorgeous blonde, this story caught me flatfooted. My first car was a 1967 Ambassador DPL convertible, light metallic blue with a white top. It had air conditioning, power brakes, tilting wheel, a 343, tinted glass remote side mirror, cruise control, and even a GLASS rear window, which never got scratched while scraping ice in Connecticut. I did sell it in 1975, albeit reluctantly. For some reason, the car hated my wife, and from the car's point of view, the feeling was mutual. So I had to let it go for the sake of body politick and moved on with a new career and family. As some articles about the 1967 Ambassador stated, there were some problems I encountered along the way, such as an exhaust manifold bolt that never stayed tight, a leaking gas tank, having to replace the signal mechanism inside the steering wheel due to a snapped nylon part, an annoying rattle caused by the emergency brake cable whapping on the frame (I fixed that by spiral cutting some hose and sliding it over the cable), and the coup de grace was that the driver door opening handle broke off and I had to temporarily replace it by scavenging a rear window crank which fit. And I still miss that car. Even then I knew its lines were timeless and understated just enough to pass for being one of the most classy looking cars from the '60's. There was nothing better than to drive the car with the top down, boot on, with a blonde as my copilot, on a sunny New England country road. And I still look back.

Love this series about the AM Ambassador. In 1967, I was only 10, 11 years old and didn't care much for AM cars. Watching this series about the '67 Ambassador, hearing all of your compliments about it, I was nodding my head on agreement with you on everything you said about this car. No, I'm not a car mechanic, merely a person that maintained my own cars over the years. I believe that, part of what hurt American Motors in the early 1970's, was build quality. My father owned a '59 AM Rambler American wagon that he bought new. Years later, he bought a '74 AMC Hornet. The Hornet seemed a poorer design and build quality then that '59 he used to say. I know that you cannot judge cars from decades apart. Different times. Business has to cut corners to save cost, I get that.. Many companies here in the states did. I'm not as educated as you are, just giving my opinion and my father's experiance from back in the day. Your ambassador, is a VERY good example indeed. Styling, thought, and proof of a quality and well thought out car. Plus, everything you said as well. Somebody took really good care of it, so your efforts to get it back on the road was hopefully painless. Enjoy your car!!!!!!!

The dash layout on our '68 was identical. On our '68 DPL, the parking lights were mounted on the front bumper. There was a top-of-the-line SST, whose parking lights were mounted exactly where they are on this '67. I tell you, this beauty is really tugging at the heartstrings!

I had one as my first car. From ‘76-‘79. 1967 Ambassador DPL, 343-4 barrel, 2 door, coral pink with a white vinyl roof. A pink and purple brocade and vinyl interior with bucket seats. Automatic, called Flashomatic, power steering and brakes, A/C. Only thing wrong was that it was rusted out in the rear fenders. It had great balance and could make Camaro’s and Mustangs eat my dust. If it hadn’t been hit, it might still be around.

Well, it was their own fault. The AMC Rogue was V-8 2 bbl. 260. Keep in mind it was 1967 the Javelin and AMX hadn't been introduced yet. Also, Rambler/AMC was going up against cars like the Mustang, Camaro, Chevelle SS, GTO and the Dodge Coronet RT 426 Hemi . Not to mention the Shelby 427 Cobra, Charger, Mercury Marauder, T-Bird, Corvette, Barracuda and the Torino. PS that's a nice Boss Blue Mustang in your profile.

There's something about this car that seems like a well tailored suit. Not necessarily an expensive suit, it's just made nicely with care taken over the fit and finish. Stylish, rather than fashionable. It's hard to believe the car is fifty years old, and not just because of the condition of it.
@noexpensespentstudios7 жыл бұрын
It's a difficult one to quantify really, modern cars are unarguably better made and finished, they just have to be, and fifty years has seen a lot of improvements. However, they don't feel like they're better, they don't feel special. I can't think of a single modern car in the same category as this that would be anything other than anodyne. I can't think of something that would excite me or feel like a joy to own just as an everyday car. That sort of thing seemed to have died out in the 90s, along with comfort and interiors that aren't black or grey.

Great stuff....lotsa chuckles... takes me back to when the plan was to keep a second car , aka .. 'la beater' on the road for as many 'saison de niege' as possible and as dirt cheap as possible in order to spare a 'solid' vehicle for the fairer weather. Yes , many amusing evenings spent with some cold ones and other ' consummables' beating and banging 'el cheapos' into some sort of reasonably roadworthy state. Anyways, your fleet is impressive! that late 40's Chrysler is such a TANK! , love the Hudsons , Kaisers and other 'orphan' marques. I owned and drove several 68' to 72' 'C' body Mopars from the late 70's into the 90's and I appreciate your efforts to keep examples of these ,especially, going for a good while yet. They are great cars that, sadly, are practically extinct here in eastern Ontario, like so many others, due to the infamously humid winters and vast amounts of salt used.
