AMC had some great looking cars. Especially when you consider that they didn't have anywhere near the budget as GM, Ford, and even Chrysler. I think that's why there cars were so good. They had to use style and build quality to get people to buy them.

Only experience I have with AMC is the 1974 Matador I rented in California while on vacation there. Picked it up at SFO airport and returned it at LAX. It was well equipped with touchy power brakes, overassisted power steering, a 327 4BBL V8, and BorgWarner built Flashomatic 3-speed automatic. It drove well inspite of its archaic trunion type front and torque tube rear suspension. The engine had been treated to a valve job, and rust was accumulating quickly, but we got a few years out of it before it lost compression in one cylinder and started burning oil. Today's cars live much longer!

My parents had a 61 Ambassador Cross country Super Station wagon until it died in 1967. It was really cool with a rear facing 3rd bench seat. The rear tailgate opened like a car door . The rear facing seat could fold flat. It was the only brand at the time that had front reclining seats, push button starter and push button transmission. At 199 inches it was the smallest full size wagon of its day. The 270 hp v8 was really powerful. The ceramic muffler was guaranteed for the life of the vehicle. The Ambassador name goes back to American Motors previous name Nash . So Ambassador goes way back before 1959. I believe the Ambassador goes back to at least 1932 The second Ambassador my parents owned was driven by me back in 73 Ambassador Brougham . I drove this car through out college 1972-77. It had very sloppy power steering, and with many cars of that time would stall 2 times each morning right after starting. The air pollution controls were mandated by congress , but were not perfected yet. My brother had a 72 Gran Torino that always stalled when you first put the car in gear . While the 73 had sloppy handling, it did have AC and a great FM stereo radio, a very fancy interior that mimicked a Caddy. It was the first car the family owned that ran until 105000 miles. That was amazing in 77, most cars were done after 70-80 k miles . The gas mileage was about 10mpg, common before the first oil crisis of 73

Well, not to nit-pick.... but, the Ambassador nameplate dates all the way back before the merger of Nash and Hudson. Nash began using the name "Ambassador" for it's topline models for model year 1927. Nash used the nameplate all the way up to the merger in 1954 and, AMC/ Nash/ Hudson used the Ambassador nameplate in 1955, '56 and '57... One could argue, although the parent company may have changed, the "Ambassador" name itself is one of the longest lived names used in the auto industry from 1927 to 1974.
@ericknoblauch9195

There was an Ambassador on the television show The Brady Bunch in the 1970's. The car was a station wagon, and was driven by Alice who was the housekeeper. It is too bad AMC is no longer with us. AMC was formed by the merger of Nash Motors, and The Hudson Motor Car Company in 1954. The merger was supposed to also include Studabaker, and Packard too but something happened at the last minute. Studabaker, and Packard merged, and went their own way in 1954. If AMC had merged Nash, Hudson, Studabaker, and Packard, it would have created an auto maker that would have been larger than Chrysler was back in 1954. If that did happen, AMC probably would have still been around today. Chrysler bought AMC in 1987. What Chrysler should do now is revive the AMC brand. AMC had a cult following, and still does today. Volkswagen is reviving the International Scout, and if it is successful, Chrysler could do the same with AMC.

You've got some pretty basic facts wrong here. The Ambassador began life as the Nash Ambassador and was part of Nash and AMC history from 1927 till 1974, 47 model years. It was always considered an Upper Medium Priced car in the Buick/Mercury/Chrysler catagory. Nash introduced the Rambler model in 1950 which was an economy car. When the Nash name was dropped in favor of Rambler, they didn't reduce price, they were equipped with V8 and still priced in the upper medium price range.

@@ThisOldCarChannel well, maybe they have a short attention span, but your premise that AMC was doing something different or new by entering several market segments isn't factually correct. AMC from 1954 thru 1962 (Their biggest sales years) Had Subcompact Car, Metropolitan, Compact Car, Rambler American, Midsized car, Rambler/Nash Rebel and Full sized cars, Hudson/Nash Ambassador......there is only 2 years, 1964 and 1965 Where AMC only produced one sized car. Abernathy's decision to get back into all segments and mimic the sales success they had in 1960, 1961 and 1962 wasn't a radical idea or a change...he was just reversing what Romney screwed up, the idea of one car one size.......Abernathy fixed Romney stupid idea, and then their sales increased and by the mid 70's, they were producing some pretty big numbers in the way of cars in all segments.......just saying......it wasn't a radical idea, it was what they always did.

My father owned a 1973 Ambassador Brougham wagon. It was the first new car he ever bought right off of the showroom floor. He was so proud, and I was nine years old sitting in the backseat. We pulled up and into our driveway. He put the car from drive and up into Park, and the entire dashboard fell right into his lap. Evidentially, they forgot to put the screws on from the factory. I’m nine and laughing my butt off in the back seat. For the next four or five years, we spent weeks in the auto shop, having the car repaired, and re-tuned as it would constantly go out of ignition timing.

My fondest memories of the AMC Ambassador, were of a blue SST wagon (no woody-sides) , which belonged to a "friend of the family," who gave us a ride home from my half-brother's house one night. New car smell was so amazing back then and the way it made those deep Chicago potholes feel so smooth! Now, factor-in the fact that, with the exception of my full-blooded brother, we were all big lard-asses and how that sporty, SST interior trim made our big booties so comfortable for the trip! I MISS AMC SO BAD! 😭!

My uncles owned a Rambler/ AMC dealership for many years. We owned several One of my favorites was our 1973 Ambassador sedan. Smooth quiet riding car. Their biggest problem was sales numbers that did not allow them to restyle and update their cars as often as the big three. Most people would not buy one because of their resale value. The only way you got anything out of an AMC on trade was to trade for another AMC. and since they were not that different from the AMC you were driving now, people either would not buy one in the first place, or they would buy a different make at trade in time.

The Ambassador was an unusual car in that it wasn't a true fuel-size car, but rather a mid-size car with an elongated front end. It shared its body with the intermediate Classic, Rebel and Matador. Nevertheless, it was as comfortable as a full-size car and its high equipment levels made it a real value-for-the-money proposition. Interesting note: the 1965 Ambassador was made from 1966 to 1975 in Argentina by IKA (Industrias Kaiser Argentina) and was equipped with the overhead-camshaft "Tornado" engine. It was a very expensive car in that country was often called "Argentina's Cadillac".

The ambassador was AMC,s flagship model, they were the first full size cars to come with a 6cyl engine as standard equipment, they were ahead their time, I think the other 3 car companies could've helped AMC, instead of watching them fold, but greed and imports started chomping at the bit, and made the domestic auto industry fall on its ass, unfortunately the biggest casualty was AMC.

Dad was a Rambler man for a lot of years in the 60s to the 70s, I think mostly because they were a little cheaper than the other makes. He had two Rambler wagons, a '63 with the interior seats that completely folded flat, and then the first new car he bought in over 12 years, a '72 Ambassador wagon. In between he had a '66 Olds 88 sedan for towing a travel trailer. The Ambassador was bright red, black interior, the showroom floor model. Roof rack, A/C, and rear-facing jump seat. I partly learned to drive on that car. It was OK. It had room to haul a number of my friends around, so I liked that. I always considered it to be more of a mid-sized wagon, more like a Chevelle, certainly not as big as a Caprice wagon, or the '67 Chrysler Newport sedan he bought used from a relative. Now that was a boat!
