AMC Trunnion Suspension Coil Spring Removal - Safe

I was rummaging through a bin of 5/8" hardware recently and saw remnants of an old spring compressor I made years ago. Truly one of the stupider things I've done!!! Thankful I still have all my fingers etc. Looking at this one, all nice and pretty, with good solid hooks, safety U-bolts, all in a nice case too - and just 30 BUCKS! It would be a total no-brainer to buy and use it should the need arise again. Thanks Jerry!

Thanks 67 - The engine is under construction right now at Michigan Engine Exchange. There were mouse nests in the cylinders even though the engine was together - ain't that crazy? Of course that was an extra cost - the urine rusted the pistons to the cylinders 🥴

in the uk we have sets where you tighten and loosen the thread bar, so top is right thread and bottom is left. I have never thought of those safety U bolts, thats is a very good idea!

I believe the cones that the spring ends sit in have an ear with a hole in it providing a place to hook into with the AMC special compression tool that once was available. It was nothing more than 2 pieces of ready rod with a hook on each end to engage into the holes to compress the spring from each end. Although the ears are looking pretty rusty but the still should be able to handle the force.

If you hold the nut stationary and turn the bolt, the hook will move along the threads and not bind and you won't have to hit it with a hammer. This helps to reduce the risk of the compressor coming dislodged.

I have to add those U-bolts to my old set. Coil springs can be very dangerous if the compressor lets go. I worked at a spring shop years ago that modified automotive coil springs. I witnessed many times an automotive coil spring shooting out of a hydraulic press under full compression after removing from the oven - it ain't pretty.
