I was already in school for Medical Coding and Billing in 2011 and a mother of 3 daughter when my father passed away unexpectedly while i was in college about 3 in the morning with my children right there i woke to trying to save his life and get medical help to us with my kids right there. I was 75 percent done but left trying to save my home after losing my Daddy to Ventricular Standstill. So now, I am going to go on back and just bringing what I can on my credits. You make the course more interesting because you are passionate, thorough and encouraging. condition- fracture ankle :sequel(late effect)-arthritis. according to point 4 in slide at 1:19:19, the code must be ( s82.892s, m12.572 )
@AMCIMedicalCoding3 жыл бұрын
This is the guideline: s. Coding of sequela generally requires two codes sequenced in the following order: the condition or nature of the sequela is sequenced first. The sequela code is sequenced second. So the Nature is first ( M12.572) followed by the Sequela (S82.892S). We apologize for the confusion.

@@AMCIMedicalCoding But how come the fracture is the Sequela? I'm sorry but i don't understand.
@cameronwebb88163 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry but this is still NOT clear. At 1:14:00 it states that the Arthritis is the sequelae. And it states that the sequelae (late code) is coded second and should have the S as a 7th character. Can you please explain this further? It is very obvious that the Ankle Fracture is NOT the sequelae so it should be coded first.
@bibiblack55823 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making this easier to understand. In reference to coding the sequela, you stated the the sequela is coded after the original condition, however (1:34:24), I noticed you coded the arthritis due to the fracture first then the fracture. Please clarify. Thank you
@AMCIMedicalCoding3 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome....The Tramatic arthropathy is the sequelae...It gets sequenced first followed by the injury (with the 7th character S)
@AMCIMedicalCoding3 жыл бұрын
@Yujin Yes, the fractured left ankle caused the sequelae so you would assign the sequelae indicator to that accident code. In essence. You would sequence the late effect illness/condition being treated first, followed by the sequelae of the injury second. When you think about it, it completely describes what happed.
@AMCIMedicalCoding3 жыл бұрын
@Yujin The chief reason for the encounter should drive your sequencing and the red instructional notations. Why is the patient at the encounter? When no other guideline drives your code selection, always remember to sequence the chief reason for the encounter first for outpatient visits.
@winter-jf4ld2 жыл бұрын
It can be read as traumatic arthritis as a (sequela of)ankle fracture, so that the sequencing makes sense. The term sequela is connected to the cause (although it would make better sense if it was connected to the late effect instead). But the guidelines appended the sequela to the cause so thats how we code it.
@muue8560 Жыл бұрын
@@AMCIMedicalCoding so TA is the reason for the encounter, so it is coded first, even though it is the real "sequel" or sequela to the Fracture...the "S" at the end of the Fracture code signifies that the Fracture is not the sequela, but has a sequela (the TA). But TA (the actual sequela) is coded first bc it caused the encounter. Is this right? Thank you!

It says here - "patient fractured his left ankle 6 months ago, today, he has traumatic arthritis in his left ankle in which the Dr. Says it is related to the fracture" Meaning, traumatic arthritis is the late effect or the sequela of the fracture he had 6 months ago right? If a person has an acute injury such as a fractured leg. Then they develop Arthritis, and they were being treated for the arthritis, you would code Traumatic Arthritis first, then the Fracture code with a S as the 7th character extender. I hop e that helps.
