Whether or not this is lighting a fire under them has yet to be seen since they make only a little of their money in the consumer market. That being said, them being complacent/greedy for years and the absolute trainwreck of 10nm has left a literal years-wide window open. Well, AMD drops support for their hardware very early. Around 8 years ago i bought an HD6870 Black Edition (2 gb gddr 5 ram) with around 1 Ghz coreclock speed which was a beast but they dropped the support for it since 2016. It was a super powerful card and better than at least half of their new cards in 2016. I wasn't able to play FIFA 18 only because their lazy ass workers treated the card as a legacy one meanwhile the weaker gtx 460 from Nvidia (Which was older than 6870) is STILL (2020) getting driver updates. I was so mad at AMD that i promised myself I'll never buy an amd graphic card again. (It's even more sad that later that year some people find out that if you rollback the driver to an older one and edit some registery keys to fake that it's updated, you can run FIFA 18 smoothly! Did you get what they did there?)
@billb03134 жыл бұрын
@@serix_16 interesting. But that gpu was released in 2010. I'd say 6 or so years of support is decent. I upgrade about every 4 years. Plus, Dr. Lisa Su has changed AMD culture since she took over. @@billb0313 Nvidia vs AMD is fierce competition. Nvidia seems to have the edge in architecture but they also want more money and focus more on proprietary tech (Gsync for example.) Does somebody know, why there are no thunderbolt 3 ryzen notebooks? There are thunderbolt 3 AM4 Mainboards...
@ElZamo924 жыл бұрын
It’s because those boards have “unofficial” support for thunderbolt 3. My guess is that while a ZEN2 laptop could technically support thunderbolt, the major manufacturers (HP, Lenovo, Dell, etc) don’t want to meddle too much in this legal grey area to avoid angering Intel.
The OEM just didn't want to put the controller inside, they need to pay royalty to Intel. Also USB 4 is coming, and it is literally TB3 without the royalty
@rayhaanomar12004 жыл бұрын
Manufacturers didn't expect renoir to be so good, hence why there are already more 10th gen intel systems and no gpus better than a 2060 paired with a Renoir cpu. I guess that the controller would add a decent amount to the cost of a device. Here's to hoping that Renoir and Cezanne APUs are put into better and more premium designs later this year.
@TheVerrm4 жыл бұрын
Adds to the cost (very important at lower end systems) and recent Thunderspy vulnerability could raise some eyebrows if such laptop is something you'd like to buy. I can understand though where you come from - a laptop with such powerful CPU might be a good candidate for eGPU setup based on thunderbolt. I'd bet it would have no issues keeping up with desktop 2070 Super or 5700XT. It would be a pretty expensive setup, but very flexible - game on 1080p medium/high when out and game on 1440p ultra when you're at home - makes sense!

@nathansstuff15474 жыл бұрын
Not every laptop has Thunderbolt. Like the one tested for example
@danieltanuwijaya76754 жыл бұрын
eGPUs unfortunately do not perform as well as regular GPUs due to Thunderbolt 3's limitation of only 4x PCIe lanes so there might be still discrepancies. Besides, there isn't any AMD laptop that supports Thunderbolt at the moment.
@filipecalixto65694 жыл бұрын
You can still get eGPU's through PCIE I think...? I'm not sure how, but I think you can connect a GPU to the PCIE connection the WiFi connector uses. It's not a realistic configuration, ofc, but it's the best apples to apples config you can get to test laptop CPU's... I may be wrong, no expert at this, just a curious dude...

I think we'll still need more time to see AMD CPUs go mainstream, you have to realise only now have they achieved incredible performance to rival Intel. AMD's Zen+ mobile CPUs were not adequate to 'sway' OEMs to completely redesign their notebooks to accomodate Ryzen. I think in the next 12-18 months we'll see an exponentially increasing number of laptops Ryzen up. However, there will be Tiger Lake with Xe to compete with. The CPU Wars: Mobile Edition have well and truly begun.
@earthtaurus10044 жыл бұрын
@Hardware Unboxed Great review, it would be nice for the U series if possible - if you can include the out of box configs so we can see exactly how OEMs are gimping the AMD 4000 series laptops with soldered on ram. I know it's a lot more work however it would really help push the laptop space in the right direct imo.

I can't get over the fact that laptop OEMs are not making enough AMD-powered laptops. I'm absolutely desperate for a Zephyrus G14-like laptop with a Ryzen 5 4600H + GTX 1660Ti Max-Q + 16/32GB DDR4. I study Physics at university, so I need good performance for simulations, compiling and calculations and a compact form factor to carry the laptop with me. But I also do music production and video/photo editing in my free time, so I'd appreciate fast RAM and solid GPU performance. I can't ditch my 6600K + GTX 1060 6GB desktop Pc, yet, but I'd like to as I study far from home and therefore travel a lot.

There are plenty of benchmarks for the mobile zen 2 platforms battery life floating around the net. The general consensus is that amd cpus monumentally thrash their Intel counterparts. But it depends on the manufacturer, bios and how they handle when to use the discrete gpu.

two things: a 1000$ laptop is NOT an entry level laptop, as much as Apple may want you to think so. It's solidly in the high end. and second, when are we going to see a laptop that doesn't have the GPU? It's useless in my situation, makes the laptop cost more, weigh more, breaks drivers, and lowers battery life. I want to see these 20 watt chips put into a 12 inch chassis with an all day battery life, not pay out the ass for a desktop replacement I can't upgrade.
@robinsuj4 жыл бұрын
