Pros:
Ryzen 7 7800X3D is impressively efficient
Zen 4 with 3D cache delivers huge gaming performance
Ryzen 7 3D doesn’t require fancy chipset drivers to deliver performance
Cons:
Price looks steep. Core i7-13700K is now available at £410
The 95W power draw seems artificially low for a Ryzen 7 CPU
You will need to budget for an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 RAM

I just bought the 7800X3D, looking forward to trying out my first AMD build. Couldn’t even bring myself to go Intel this time around after 20 years of loyalty to team Blue. This time around AMD actually does win. In the past AMD has been a better value, but now it’s better value and better performance.

How's your 7800X3D holding up? I'm in the same dilemma; have gone with Intel for 13 years straight and never tried AMD. Does it "just work" or have there been driver issues, BSOD, long boot times, or any other quirks?

@@commandershepard9920 I love it. Better performance than the 13900k and a lot smoother in VR. No overclocking required either. I just set the AMD exp profile and away I went. I primarily fly in the flight sims in VR and do some racing as well. Some games will perform better with the Intel, but for sims (racing and flying) the Vcache really improves stability and smoothness.

19:31 Remember that with TDP they're not referring to how much power it'll draw but how much cooling capability it needs. Those are closely related, but not the same. With the 3D V-cache these processors are more temperature sensitive.
@kylestewart4444
@kylestewart4444 Жыл бұрын
Didn't AMD essentially have to cap this chip's power draw because of the thermal sensitivity of the added v-cache? I don't remember where I heard that but it makes sense to me. I assume that probably does leave some processing performance on the table but if you primarily use your PC for gaming, the benefits of the added cache appear to be more important than the loss of productivity-based performance. It seems to be an excellent chip for a very specific use case. Not all games are even set up to benefit from the extra cache but for the ones that are, the performance uplift appears to be pretty substantial. The 7700X is a good value and offers a great balance between productivity-based tasks and gaming performance but if you're only chasing better gaming performance and you don't need the higher clock speeds, the 7800X3D looks like a great choice.

I got a i9 13900k new from ebay for £500 and a new i7 13700k new for £325. Amd can't compete because the 7800x3d is nerfed when it comes to productivity and it's priced badly. Not to mention that the Temps will be lower and the Fans will be quieter . Not sure that - 30 will work with an 7800X3D because it clocks higher but ... at least -10 / -15 should be possible . That would be my suggestion for every X3D Owner , its Performance for free without increasing the Voltage and if your MoBo does not support PBO2 with the 5800X3D , simply use PBO2 Tuner .

I hope one day we can see heavy open world mmorpg(world of warcraft, final fantasy and etc) and heavy sim games(stellaris, civ6, hoi4, total war end of turn times ,football manager and etc) tested as well.. those type of games also have a huge amount of player base especially the mmorpgs like world of warcraft have like 1-2mil online daily for example and all of the mentioned games benefit greatly from 3dvcache, where Shadow of the Tomb Rider is just good for benchmarking rather than me or anyone else playing it. Open World Online games with a ton of people literally everywhere you go can show greatle the benefits of 3dvcache and how much it can help with 1% lows in these scenarios. Also open world mmo rpgs are not a CyberPunk type of game which you can finish for 3 weeks and never play again. Games like this are being played for 10-15years easily on and off or continuesly. P.S. Excuse my not so great english and yes I know its not easy to test online open world mmos because there are a ton of variables, but I'm sure it can be done and it will be very much appreciated by a ton of people and not even counting the sim games as well.

@Tetsujinmustdie I have a 13900 non k. It has a base TDP of 65w and turbo TDP of 219w. On idle it uses only 4w, in gaming its about 55w to 70w, in productivity software its between 30w to 200w depending on the workload (internet browsing vs rendering out a video for example). Temps are cool under normal usage, it only ever hits 99c during benchmarks like Cinebench R23 (which pushes power draw to over 270w before thermal throttling). My 13900 is inside a NZXT H1 v2 case so a relatively "small" 140mm AIO water cooler using Noctua NT-H2 thermal paste is what's cooling it. My PC is able to score 37k in Cinebench R23 which is pretty good for a non k Intel CPU squeezed into a small form factor PC.

You could also technically disable ccd1 on the 7950x3d and again should be getting better results as the cache ccd on that chip clocks higher. Hell, I even wouldn't be surprised at ALL if the R9 7950X3D ends up ever so slightly FASTER for gaming in the end thanks to its +200MHz higher X3D CCD clock-speed (max 5.25GHz vs 5.05GHz on 7800X3D). 🤷 Reviewers like Linus' over at LTT who are seemingly just assuming that the R9 X3D chips are PERMANENTLY gimped for gaming vs the R7 7800X3D and that the asymmetric thread scheduling straight up cannot be improved are COMPLETELY throwing out the baby with the bathwater IMO... 😑🤦

For editing large 10-bit 4k video files in Davinci Resolve, how does this perform? I know the 13900k will be faster but can you still get by happily with the 78003dx or will video editing be a stutter fest?

It will be much slower, they really messed up the productivity aspect of this chip. If you care about productivity something like the i7 13700k will be incredible and it gets near the 7800x3d and beats it un some game while costing much less than the AMD chip. For productivity I would look at i7, i9 or 7900x3d and above.

@@sephiroth4543 Thanks man. I always find the reviews are too focused either on gamers or hardcore productivity. I'm sort of in between. I game a lot but do a lot of video editing (semi-professionally). Personally, I don't care about waiting an extra 30 seconds for a video render to complete but what I want to be sure about is that if I use 600mb per second modern video files in Davinci Resolve that my editing experience will be fluid and not a complete stutterfest (like my current 6700k is with 100mb per second 4k files). They never cover that point in these reviews. Not everyone is a professional videographer but wants to make sure at the same time that the chip will still serve their needs if they are in between the two.

@@quirkyitalianexploration exactly, essentially what we want is value for money and a good price to performance chip. The 7800x3d would have been worth the money if it performed like the 7900x chip for productivity while giving us across the board performance gains in high res gaming rather than being better in selected games and not being that much better than the i7 13700k at higher resolution gaming. I always liked Amd for their value but they seem to be messing that up atm. Another thing is why release the 7950x3d when the 7800x3d is better in gaming and the original non 3D chip is the same or slightly better for productivity tasks.

Great work. It's a hugely impressive CPU. It's likely not the target market but how does the 7800X3D fare in lightly-threaded but CPU-intensive jobs? I expect that AMD will top this by launching a 7950X3D2 with 3D cache on both CCDs soon enough. Asrock have just released the Asrock B650M-HDV/M.2 to a very positive review from Hardware Unboxed; I'm looking forward to seeing you test that with the 7800X3D on the basis of 'can you save on the motherboard to splurge on the CPU?'.

I'd expect it to perform a little worse than a 7700x in workloads that are capable of using all 8 cores and 16 threads. Good enough for hobby use in the content creation space but not ideal for more serious/professional work. I think AMD says that the 7800x 3D should score 18k in Cinebench, to put it into perspective a Core i7 13700k scores about 29k to 30k. A Core i9 13900k hits 40k. A 7950x 3D2 would probably be pointless. Since most games don't typically take advantage of more than 6 threads there would be no uplift in gaming performance. If all 16 cores had the 3D v cache it would perform even worse than the first iteration of the 7950x 3D in content creation workloads, probably somewhere between a 7900x and 7950x 3D. It would be DoA.

The amount of performance/watt that the 7800X3D is stunning. AMD isn't leveraging this enough. I don't get the bit about the motherboard costs yes I know they are too high and people talk about the AM5 platform cost which tbf is pretty steep but you do tend to get more longevity with AMD platforms than you do with Intel do you? Personally I think GPU prices, both AMD and NVidia, are more egregious than the rest of the platform cost all together. I suppose they could argue that platform costs have mainly been higher than GPU prices and that justifies their position. However, that said if you are currently running AM4 platform and are considering going Intel wouldn't you also have to buy a new motherboard too and that motherboard would have to be upgraded every couple of years for each new processor type?? No I don't like the current pricing but I think a lot of reviews tend to be a little one sided.
@KitGuruTech
@KitGuruTech Жыл бұрын
It depends whether you are building a new PC from scratch or upgrading. It is unlikely you are switching from an existing AM5 to this 7800X3D so you probably need an AM5 motherboard and you might need DDR5 unless you currently have Intel 12th Gen and want to move to AMD. If you are buying an AM5 motherboard and you are confident you'll stick with the sub-100W CPU you can probably buy a relatively cheap model, provided it supports the 7800X3D. Right now that is a grey area. If you want to move to AM5 and are not sure what you will be doing over the next few years you could well end up spending a small fortune on your motherboard, just to avoid potential problems. The good news it that if you are on AM4 and have a Ryzen 7 5800X3D you are probably very happy. Leo

It would be useful to know which games you are benchmarking at what image preset and which graphics you are using. Edit: also worth checking whether you have Core Isolation enabled or disabled in Windows 11. Leo

Thanks god those benchs suck ! Of course if you bench only games in favor of cach it will be difference but in 25 games the difference is about 5 to 6% in 1080, in 1440p around 3 to 4% and in 4K ig’f you pick the 13900ks Intel lead around 2%

Your weird tdp results might be caused if you previously had a 7900x3d or 7950x3d on rig. You have to do a complete fresh reinstall or the OS remains contaminated with core parking drivers...essentially half your cores might be parked even though it's only 1 ccd

No it's not that. As I explain in the video I used multiple SSDs each with a clean installation of Windows 11 and you can see in the video that all cores are functioning. The power, clock speed and temperature were checked over by AMD and also matches another reviewer with whom I consulted. The only thing that is wrong is the Cinebench score. If I had simply stated it was 18,200 and not shown my homework no-one would have had a clue. Leo

@@MonesahBuson depending on the budget i'd probably go for the newer am5 platform, if you don't plan on upgrading the next 4-5 years or so the 5800x3d is a good cheap long term bet in my opinion. there are probably some reviews for your topic out there for some more opinions.

Interesting to see that your benchmarks almost consistently show lower 1% low results compared to the competition, while I see the exact opposite in several other reviews.

@@SmithyD86 it is when you consider the price to performance ratio. I don't think there are many people with 1080p monitors so the performance difference at 2k and 4k is not worth upgrading to. For example I got my i9 13900k for £500 and its a far better all round CPU. The 7800x3d is just a waste of money because you don't get enough performance boost in higher resolution to justify the cost over something like the i7 13700k and it's terrible for productivity when compared to the i7, i9 and even the i5. 13th gen chips.

@@sephiroth4543 When focussing on gaming only the Intel 13 gen are a waste of money compared to the 5800 X3D. The CPU uses about 3x less power than the 13900k. Gen 13 and 5800 x3d need some copium to realise how good this is for gaming...
