I think another issue not addressed in the video (at least up to <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1220">20:20</a>) is that modern games seem to be so terribly optimised that going overkill on specs is a way to try and counter it

Glad to hear the nod to motherboards as the other half of the "paralysis by indecision" issue. I personally find pairing a good MB with my choice of CPU and GPU far more challenging than picking out the CPU and GPU in the first place.

The problem with motherboards is that it shouldn't be like that by the very nature of the motherboard but manufacturers like to create artificial paywalls between features and tiers. When I was young, some motherboards even had VRM daughterboards that you could use to upgrade the VRM. Things such as M.2 should not be horizontally placed on the motherboard but on an expansion card using bifurcation, unless it's some itx motherboard that goes in a special case. Every capable motherboard should offer full pcie 5.0x16 bandwidth on multiple slots and let users pick and choose the usb, networking, audio, storage configuration through expansion cards. This is the point of a PC, that it's supposed to be customizable. Bios flashback, dual bios, cmos reset are all features that can be implemented post purchase with simple, cheap workarounds but that means the manufacturer can't charge you an extra $100 for what it costs $10 to implement if you really feel like you need these features on day one to build your PC. GN Steve's rant about seven digit displays was absolutely spot on about how manufacturers screw over customers these days.

Yep, and after all that drama, everything you ordered arrives and you start putting the things together you figure out that your old CPU cooler for the same old CPU on the new motherboard DOESN'T FIT the new motherboard because the old motherboard was an HP Omen proprietary motherboard with a custom AIO, either that ort microATX motherboards have a different layout for the CPU cooling solutions from the full size ATX which I haven't even considered up until this point (thinking same CPU, same chipset, it will just work, right?). Whichever the case, the AIO from the prebuilt didn't come with any extra retention brackets.

@@vedranb87 That is dowm to your own due dilligence. You let yourself get locked in to, or penalised by, a cut-price ecosystem. The likes of Alienware/Dell and HP are whole-product PC's. Technically speaking they are not IBM-clone PC's; which are (by accident) a kit of parts built to standards. I've been stung myself; GN has been stung. (GN is what it does in large part from being stung. Their reviews of such do the due diligence for, and show how to do it, yourself). You can MAKE an upgrade to work; but it will cost you time and effort that defeats why you bought the thing in the 1st place. You'll be a better PC enthusiast by learning from this though; so it is not all bad. Still sucky; but not all bad.

It's been like 10 years since I looked into pc stuff basically, since I made my 4790k rig, which I'm still using and hasn't failed at all, and when I'm still bloody confused on what motherboard to buy. And even among the ones I know are good, I read about a lot of problems, ie. The Intel Ethernet cutting out all the time!

Thank you Jay! I run a local computer business. I have been feeling the same frustrations as you. Trying to communicate all of these things quickly and easily to a customer can be frustrating. Developing new ways of approaching build philosophy has been my goal. I finally found my way of doing it. By figuring out what monitor they have and budget. If they are aiming for 1080p 144Hz, then it isn't difficult. If they want to run something with higher resolution or refresh rate, then I adjust my target accordingly. It simplifies it for them but still complicates it for me. Finding the right balance. Keep up the "boomer rants" because it makes me not feel alone in this.

@Indigo Mizumi it makes it so much easier. Why have high tier hardware, and only have a 27" 1080p 144Hz monitor. The monitor is also just a Spectre or Koorui so that refresh doesn't even look good. It's all good because you are getting 300+ fps in your game.

There are some things I want to reconfigure but with a 5900X and a 3080 I'll be set for performance for a long time. My only problem with the 3080 is that I want to dual boot WIndows and Linux and Nvidia just doesn't work well with Linux.

The whole tech industry is absolutely insane right now and this is a great video that showcases it. The amount of available products is absolutely insane and when you factor in the cost of everything it's mind blowing. I'm in the predicament of wanting to upgrade, but the whole cpu/mobo/ram issues make me worry, I just want to wait it out a bit longer until more of these odd issues are straightened out. I can totally relate to this. I was running a Ryzen 3600, 16gb DDR4, X570 motherboard and had a temp 1660 Super while I waited for the GPU chaos to end. The new lines dropped and just added so many new lines for seemingly no real reason, so I just upgraded to a 5800X3D, 6800XT and doubled my ram all on sale or in auctions. Suits all my 1440p needs, saved a ton of money and beyond 4K absolute peak specs, I'm not sure who needs all the confusing latest stuff lol

5800X3D + 6950XT + 1440p here. Can't complain. Even tweaked the GPUs clock speeds to only suck around 170 watts compared to stock 340 watts, while even performing much better for me (higher minimum clocks paired with lower maximum clocks, no undervolting, giving me a very stable performance/power curve). Perfect for my needs and I still have lots of performance/power headroom for newer titles when they actually need more performance.

Dozens of CPU's with little to no difference, dozens of new GPU's with nobody wanting them. Want 1080p or low/mid 1440p = 6700XT, want high 1440p and 4K? = 6950XT or 7900 series. Want the absolute top card on the market? 4090. There is no need for any of the other cards tbh except maybe a budget 1080 option like 6500XT lol

Long story as short as possible: While researching possible build parts and upgrade paths for my desktop I came across your channel. I'm rocking a cyberpower PC with FX6300, 8GB, and a FX580 8GB 2048. I'm blessed to have this PC that allows me to play some great games, but its starting to show its age playing newer demanding games. My wife, who got into gaming this past year, is using a i7 8550, 8Gb, and GTX 1050 4gb notebook.This notebook is starting to show its age with newer games also. We just took her notebook apart for its 1st cleaning & thermal paste CPU & GPU applications. Good time we had. Now we're both playing on 1080p monitors, so we don't need monster PC's that can run 1440P & 4K. We know all this because of people, like you, who share your wealth of knowledge/experience. Thanks again! That knowledge is helping us narrow down our choices while weighing options. We' can't afford mistakes on a very limited budget (I'm sure many understand this). My wife's desktop will be our 1st build and watching her enticement from videos like yours brings a smile to my face. Biggest mod you can do is a beefy cpu cooler. Then ram. I had stability illues with 6000mhz ram. I set it to 6200mhz and it's now stable. There's still bios issues.

If u tune it right it will nearly as fast as the X3D to the point where you'd not be able to tell the difference unless your using a 4090 to run 1080p. So your good.

I have 3 of them currently, my latest is an intel 12900K on a Z690 platform, I undervolted both cpu and my 3080 12gig based on your earlier vids. Great in-depth video on all the different CPU's out there. Jayz video's, however, are primarilly focussed on gamers and I wouldn't mind seeing some info on how to select parts for someone who doesn't just game on their computer. For example, getting some info on selecting parts for building a PC for someone who games and does creative things on their computer like photo editing, video editing, auto cad, audio engineering, etc would be awesome as well.

I agree with you totally. I am not a gamer. My primary use for my machine is homework and CAD/Revit/Bim style of work. The only information I find when it comes to processors; is Intel Xeon and AMD Threadripper Pro. So a while ago, I made the base of my system based on the AMD Threadripper Pro and Asus WRX Pro motherboard. I can not get anyone to share any information on how these processors will work in the world of CAD/BIM and etc. Right now, the AMD Threadripper and Asus combination are great. My only issue - is if this is really an issue. It is not cool no manufactor produces a small format motherboard based on the MATX format. Everything is ATX and up. Which means most cases are high. So right now, I am considering going to Intel Xeon so that I can use the smaller Micro ATX motherboard. I wish you well!

As a person who's going to build his first gaming PC next week, decision paralysis was definitely a big issue for me, especially when choosing a motherboard, I was so horribly confused on which mobo to get (I went with a B660 Steel Legend on sale that was cheaper and had more features than the one I had picked out). I know I definitely overspent on a few things, and that was after a friend was trying to encourage I get a nicer system with a 3060 Ti and an i5-13600K saying that I needed it (I settled with an RX 6650 XT and a i5-12400F). I was surprised when learning, generally speaking, that "X part is better than Y part" does not mean that X part is bad, and is perfectly suitable for most games. This is coming from a guy with a shitty laptop with a GTX 1060 in it and an i7-8750h that runs at like 170 degrees (F) on any game made in the last 15 years (the GPU isn't as bad, but that CPU really holds it back because of those temps), but I can still play even modern games, granted I turn basically all the settings down. Even now, before I build my system, I have that nagging feeling in the back of my mind of "did I really choose the right parts?", even if i've soaked in a lot of reviews and comparisons and benchmark videos to see that it's not really a huge deal, and basically anything will be a big step up from what I have. tldr; I'm an inexperienced little baby when it comes to PC building, but you really don't need the best of the best unless you're an enthusiast with a big budget. Especially if you do your research and learn how you can get the most out of your parts, even if that tinkering may be frustrating at first. (also Jay if you see this you're a lifesaver for making a video on my SSD, the Samsung 980 Pro, so I know to immediately check and update it if I got the bad model. No wonder it was on sale when i was gifted it lmao)

Your TLDR summed up nicely. Most people think they need a 4090 and an i9 top spec to run their favorite games. All people are confused but any option would suffice. The thing is, we always want to extract the best value out of our limited budgets, hence why we're all confusing. However, I always advise people going with the most recent versions of parts. Meaning, for example, yes idk a 2080ti might be better than a 3060ti, but in support and features the 2080ti might be held back in the future. Your friend talking about the 13600K could be talking aobut that, BUT I would say that you could've gotten a 13600 non K variant especially since you're new to this and not really into OC'ing (that's actually another one that people always talk about, 99% of people don't want to OC since they just want to play their games). At the same time I would've kept the 3060Ti in the system since it would be better than the 6650XT and if you could spend a bit more would be awesome. Despite everything I think you have a great system and hope you enjoy it!

My 2017 custom-built PC finally crapped out 3 weeks ago and I thought okay just get another one based on my needs. Yeah, it was way more complicated than 5 years ago. I caved and got the Mac Studio Max. My first Mac after all Windows-based PCs since the 90s. Not a fan of the Mac OS but the little thing is fast and efficient. I wanted HDMI 2.1 and a few other upgrades but the Max was on sale for $1500 at Costco with a 90 day return policy. Custom build PCs were coming in at $3k - $3800. Does anyone have some Ideas on a comparable PC build would be? HDMI 2.1, Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a 2.5 G ethernet port. I want to edit 4k 120fps work on a nice 32" 4k display. I'm coming from an AMD Ryzen 7 1800x on an MSI B350M Gaming Pro, GTX 1060, 32 GB Ram. SATA SSD.

I built my first PC last year (I was a longtime laptop user since the XP era) and went overboard (this was shortly before the latest gen CPUs and GPUs came out). Before actually getting the parts I asked around quite a bit. It's definitely confusing for a newcomer, especially with the CPU and motherboard market overloaded with seemingly similar choices.

I finally upgraded my fx8350 and rx480 at the end of last year when prices for the "old" stuff was low to a 5700x and a 6700xt. It's an unfathomable difference and even seeing the the performance gains of the newest gens of cpus and gpus I don't see any reason I will need to get anything new in the next 3-5 years. I'm happy playing games at relatively high settings and fps with my midrange stuff. I don't need a video card and cpu that makes me need to buy a whole new monitor to keep up, 1440p at 144 is good enough for me.

Hopefully health issues have cleared up for you guys! You guys taking the time to talk about it in this manner is really helpful. It ties in very well with how I go about helping friends pick out parts. I usually direct them towards the mid-to-high end of the mid-grade (5600x or 5800x as Ryzen CPU examples), and then from there make changes based on workload, how much time they want before upgrading, etc. I also try to keep them in the middle ground of motherboards. Like yeah you can buy the $400 motherboard like I did, or save $200 to put towards a bigger SSD and a step up on the GPU side from a 4070 to a 4080.

Jay's community service! Super valid information as usual! I for example recently upgraded from R5 2600 to R7 5700x. I am using a B450 motherboard so going 5800 or 5900 wouldn't be a great idea probably. Also I realize that the R5 5600 would have gotten me about 98% of the performance for gaming but the price difference was small and I play around with virtualization so I can appreciate the extra cores. With that being said, it took me a week or so researching to make sure this is the proper way for me to go. When you put the new sockets in the equation is becomes Hell! I am really sad for people that are not technical because, a lot of them will end up paying a hefty premium for stuff that they don't use, but I guess that is marketing. Anyway, at least with the competition we get some pretty great CPU-s for not a whole lot of money!

I'm a completely fresh newbie to this PC-building world since the last month when I decided that I wanted to make a PC that could fullfil my average gaming needs and I've been trying to understand as best as I can what parts do I need without exaggeranting, the names, technologies, terminologies, tiers and all that stuff. In that process, I've seen dozens of channels and videos and yours is truly one of the best I've found so far. I love how consumer-oriented you guys are in your reviews, how blunt and honest you guys are when saying things like "If you're just gonna do X in your PC, then you don't need Y super high-end stuff. In fact, almost nobody needs it, a Z component is gonna be more than enough". I also like how clear and straight to the point you guys are. You guys have been a life-saver for me this past month when trying to understand how PC building works and in understanding what things I really need and what others, despite being a plus, might not be worth the extra money or would be excessive for my needs. Also, your humor is catchy, made me laugh a couple of times. So it's really relieving to hear that even you experts are starting to have problems with how overly complicated PC parts categories are getting. Being a Micro Center employee in Marietta GA, I completely agree. Lately, it has been more complicated to find the right components for customers wanting to build a new computer. CPU's and motherboards are the main components that make this difficult. Not to mention ATX 3.0 PSU's coming with or without the 600 watt direct cable variant for 40 series GPU's. I love the stuff that is coming out but its only adding more to the confusion of "what do I go with for a new system" like you mentioned.

Now I'm diving into home labs and I recently got a promotion at work (that I am DEFINITELY not qualified for) that puts me (mostly) in charge of upgrading the workstation computers from 7 years ago. So not only do I get to deal with "Which gaming CPU do I want?", I also deal with "Do I want a server CPU for my NAS?", "Which motherboard chipset is best and offers the features I care about?", and "Is it better for us to upgrade to an Intel Xeon e5-2695 v4 or buy new computers with the i5-11500 for five times the price (or more)?". It was so much easier back then, as the PC market was a bit less confusing, with less CPU's to choose from. I'm gonna pick a i5-12600K, 16gb (or maybe 32gb) DDR4 ram, and hope it will be good for many years to come, just like my old build. 😁👍

If you’re going for a system you definitely won’t upgrade why choose the 12600k? In my opinion the best and cheapest system you can get at the moment is the amd am4 platform, it’s having its last hurrah with amazing prices and amazing parts. I just bought a used system a few days ago for 1000€. It has the amazing ryzen 7 5800X3D, a Radeon 6950 xt 32gb ram, watercooling, a good case with high end fans, basically everything that I’ll ever need in the next few years. It’s the best gaming setup possible on the am4 platform and I got it for the price of a new entry level system. All the parts still have warranty it’s just amazing. I really recommend looking into used pc builds. Ignore the idiots who think their stuff is still worth lots of money - it isn’t! The prices have fallen brutally and that’s why we buy now, cheaper than ever! After all the scalping and stupid crypto stuff finally we get cheap parts! Oh and please don’t buy the latest generation, the graphic cards for example only have 3-5% more power for their equivalent generation at almost double the price. This is the worst increase in the history of consumer PC parts as we know them! So I would suggest going with the AM4 platform from AMD. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D for gaming and the Ryzen 9 5900x/5950x for work if you do physical simulations, high end renderings etc. For non specific daily stuff just buy the regular Ryzen 7 5800x, it’s a high end CPU itself. I’d also suggest going with the Radeon 6900 XT/6950 XT since they are so cheap these days that I don’t even consider Nvidia and their ridiculous prices anymore. I sold my Nvidia RTX 3060ti for almost the price the 6900 XT costs used, people are really stupid and believe the „only Nvidia builds next gen gpus“ bullshart.

So .... I use a single pc setup. Me and a buddy tested streaming on my 7950X3D. The 8 none 3D V-cache we use for the streaming software while the 8 3D V-cache cores run the game. Works awesome ngl.

​@@joegreezynot really. There is a guide up already to do so. Well, a german guide at least. Just google for it. But i can guarantee you, as soon as you have set it up its working flawlessly. No drop in game performence eighter since it uses the usually parked cores. I have my tarkov limited to 144 fps due to my monitor but everything ultra, no dlss. Streaming without a single drop. The 7800X3d might be the better gaming chip, but when you do these hybrid workloads (gaming + streaming) i dont think that any other chip can compete.

I noticed in benchmarks there are big differences with the CPU performance but all those benchmarks are done with a 4090 and when you go higher in resolution the less of a difference there is in performance.

As a PC builder things began to get confusing for me when you were able to build computers with either DDR4 ram or DDR5 ram, its not that bad but its an entire other variable to consider as well. When I first started i was also confused about the different between windows 10 and windows 10 pro or home.

To make things easier, I usually choose the motherboard first. How many processors it can support for future upgrade which won't break the bank account; how many NVMe drives it can support; how many slots of ram did it have (preferably 4); what graphic card that can take advantages on it's designs and features. And then just compare the prices with similar specs for different brand. Afterward, just search reviews on how the board performs and did it have any weakness like manufacturers faulty design or what's not.

I would say that a mobo is just as a comitment as a CPU. Since architectures are constantly changing you might as well get a good mobo but when time comes to change the CPU just change the board too since it most likely won't be compatible with CPU's that would make sense to upgrade to in a few years.

Whilst the architecture keep changing to support the overwhelming need of a resource from the software usage, people with restricted budget in mind do not immediately upgrade everything they have. People like me would look into used market to get things at quarter of a price to upgrade and still can manage to run the software that I want. I usually wait for the games prices to go down around 2-3 years before I bought them at discounts. By then also I would easily buy the upgrades I need to support them.

Same, I upgraded from a 8700k and 1070 to a 7800x3d and 7900xtx. I've yet to see my 7800 go above 30 watts during any game. The 7900xtx on the other hand.. 400watts at full load, slightly undervolted at normal clock speeds. I've only got a 750watt psu so the 7800 drawing basically nothing is perfect considering the 7900xtx is a bit of a power hog. Really feel like I hit the sweet spot in terms of the right time to upgrade. Didn't get scalped at all, paid msrp, and even had rebates and free games thrown in.

I just built my first PC last year. I dive headfirst into every video about every part I needed. I was overwhelmed with my CPU choice along with a MB, case, cooler, ram, power supply I mean for someone who has no idea & has to learn everything like I did most would probably give up because it is 100% overwhelming. If I could go back I’d buy a different CPU. I bought an i9-11900k which at the time was newer cuz the 12900 I believe just released but I didn’t do enough research on it so I wasted money but it works (for now)

5800x3d is probably the best value on the market, with some good B550 boards falling under $200 now. It's still a top tier gaming cpu-- not as great for any productivity, but if your primary task is gaming, it's still right up there.

I got myself an order in for a 7800X3D. With that efficiency and the insane gaming performance while being more than enough for my hobbyist production stuff sold me on it. I plan to keep the system I'm building right now running for quite a while with maybe a GPU upgrade in 2-3 gens and if necessary some more RAM. Part selection was hard but I'm really happy now. 😁

When I do a build I narrow it down with a set budget and look at what's available here in Canada. Our prices are higher than the US for example I saw a 5800x3d selling for $459. I'm currently running a 5600x, Aorus Master, and a 3080. So the 5800x3d will likely be my only upgrade this time around.

Well depends how often you upgrade your pc. I build my Pc for atleast 5+ years and if i take in count the price of AM5 and how young that platform is (means more issues) it makes more sense to go top line AM4 build wich can hold for more then 5+ years with no issues. I just build my new rig month ago and i took 5800x3D with RX 7900 XTX (The previous PC was ryzen 5 5600x and GTX 1070 ) and im happy.

the thing with computter parts is everything is "old" in about 6 months. CPU and GPU manufacturers exploit a lot of FOMO and its kind of disgusting. enjoy your system, building your own PC is honestly the best feeling ever, keep it up!
