The problem with "dead platform" vs "current platform" is the risk that the "upgrade" isn't much of an upgrade, or if it is cost-efficent. See: Ryzen 9000 series vs 7000 series. I priced out moving platforms (AM4 - AM5) & the cost is nearly $750. The bump up isn't worth it, in my opinion.

Really disappointed by this video, to not mention AM4 entry level upgrade properly was criminal, really should have specified that those already on AM4 looking for entry level upgrade 5700x3d is the best option instead of aiming the entry level and Intel users that have no choice but to buy a whole new platform to upgrade
@nimrodery10 сағат бұрын
The price advantage isn't there versus the 7600, platform included, plus you get the opportunity to upgrade, your only upgrade option on AM4 would be the 5950X and you'd get reduced gaming performance. On top of that, depending on your location, AM4 boards can be slim pickings.

@@nimrodery Irrelivant of the title of that section of the video, the video is titled "top 5 CPU's of 2024" which includes that section, also he litterally begins that section with "starting with the cheapest option" and "my recommendation for the entry level CPU" not platform. if anything you have highlighted how poor that section was since now it looks like hes saying the cheapest entry level CPU is to buy platform 1700 which he also states is dead.. while also in the same section saying "AM4 platform is argubly the best playform we have ever seen" but then not elaborating on that at all. The botton line is that portion of the video is lacking essential infomation, seems very rushed and a poor effort, not to Hardware unboxed usual standard and arguebly the entry level/value part is the most important part. Also nice try but its nothing to do with what platform im on, you're obviously looking for an arugment since you are playing blind to the facts that that section is basically saying you shouldnt bother with AM4 even if you are on AM4 and your cheapest upgrade is buy in to 12400 and 1700 chipset this is dumb advice the 5700x3d is literally cheaper than buying that whole platform and performs better, probably still perform better even on older AM4 board with PCIE3 since only current top teir cards like 4090 even come close to saturating PCIE3. anyone with AM4 300 series board from 2017 can spend £150 for a cheaper and better upgrade this should have been stated in the video. a quick scroll through the comments also shows that what smart people are doing

I find it interesting how overlooked the 14700K(F) is by reviewers and consumers alike - it is usually nipping at the heels of the fastest CPUs while costing significantly less - in some cases almost half the price i.e. the 285K, often considerably outperforms similar priced CPUs in productivity and/or is a significant increase in productivity for not a huge amount more money than some of the mid-range options. For those gaming on anything less than a 4090 and/or at higher resolution and settings it will give performance within margin of error of even the X3D parts - I've literally had a 7800X3D along side the 14700K with 4080 GPUs at 1440p Ultra/4K and you wouldn't know which was which from the frame rate. By the time more powerful GPUs come along which might expose the performance difference at this level/settings any of these CPUs will likely be less than ideal anyhow. The only downside really is if the power draw and thermals are a big deal to you - but generally the power difference drawn at the wall is not as different as people think from the reviews and if your system spends a good bit of the day sitting idle or low utilisation states i.e. just web-browsing the more efficient idle power use of the Intel helps to balance out the power use over a whole day. Unlike the 14900 you can just about air cool the 14700 without the compromises involved with the 14900.

@Stephen__White6 сағат бұрын
Well the 12400F is faster in some situations, the 5600/5600X is faster in some situations. At that level of budget you should really be looking at exactly what you are looking to play, and getting the best CPU for those work loads. Like for instance I recently helped a friend move off of 9th Gen Intel and onto a more modern platform and where he spends around 80% of his gaming time per week in Final Fantasy 14, the Ryzen 5 5600 was the obvious choice. As it's roughly 34% better in that game. He also plays larger 4X games like Stellaris, and based on GN testing, the 5600 is roughly 5% faster there, saving roughly 2 minutes of real time in late game simulation time. Hyper budget really comes down to a few questions, "what do you plan on doing with your PC?" and "how much can you spend to not have to spend again in the next year or two?" It's really the category that requires the most research, because lets be honest if you have all the money, your choice is obvious RTX 4090, or a pair of 7900 XTX and a 9800X3D, if you have a lot of money your choice is still fairly obvious, 7900 XT and a 9800X3D.(based on Canadian prices where the 7900 XT can be gotten for about the price of a 4070 Super). Meanwhile on the low end you have a lot more to look into because money spent matters SO much more on the low end. Ironically as well, the 5600X vs 12400F is the same as the 5800X3D vs 12900K, where the extra cache doesn't matter the 12900K is faster than a 5800X3D, but when the extra cache does matter, the 5800X3D crushes the 12900K. You know back when Intel was still competitive and it was actually a choice at the top levels for best CPU...

It should be fine. I'm using one temporarily right now with my 4080 and I'm not noticing any issues. Its replacing my 5800X3D system and I'm waiting for the 9800X3D to come back in stock at MSRP, and the 7500F allowed me to get my new AM5 system built and running. I'm using 2x32GB G.Skill 6000 CL30 RAM and use PBO with a -10 offset right now. I might bump it up to -20 after more stability testing.
@zodwraith57457 сағат бұрын
On the entry level I'd argue it's worth spending the extra $30ish to bump it to a 12600kf. (I don't know why you have such high prices for all your Intel CPUs) You're not only getting 4 more cores, but a whopping 500mhz higher frequency before you even consider overclocking. That would surely be worth scratching together a measly 30 dollars more. Once you go 7600 you're spending notably more on the mobo, CPU, as well as DDR5, and you DO have an upgrade path with the ever dropping 13th and 14th gen prices that still offer a healthy uplift. When we don't know what Zen6 will bring let alone Zen7, or even IF they'll be on AM5 when AMD refuses to commit to it I'm not going to automatically assume "platform longevity" as much when they _TRIED_ to limit Zen3 to 500 series mobos only. Then even when they backtracked it after all the backlash 400 owners had to wait up to 6 months for BIOS and 300 owners had to wait an insulting 18 months. NO BIOS take 6 months to write, let alone 18. That's not platform longevity, that's a tantrum. I'd rather just buy the f**king motherboard at that point (which is exactly what I did with Zen3) I will never understand why AMD gets so much praise for "platform longevity" when people seem to magically forget the minefield that it was. While AMD _finally_ did what's right in the end don't for a second pretend they _wanted to._ Let's also not forget how many generations TRX40 received and that was a thousand dollar platform. Platform longevity my ass. Buy for what you need TODAY, not what you hope _might_ be available down the road. Especially when you're shopping for "entry level" and I don't see AMD dropping prices with their lead.

i dont understand why everyone is ignoring the 265k. it is by far the best CPU in the arrowlake lineup as it is basically uncontested at its $400 price point because its cheaper and faster than the 9900x and the 285k is best case allcore 15-20% better while costing over 50% extra. even If the 285k was available at mrsp, most should still buy the 265k.

All in all here the price difference between the 7700X and the 9700X isn't big enough and I feel as time goes on the 9700X is becoming the better deal. Also I have a lot of love for the super cheap and highly capable Ryzen 5700X I think that's one of the best lower mid range budget build cpu to be had. As much as AM4 is kind of dead... I think it's the most stable and reliable platform I ever seen. So far out of the few AM5 builds I have done, I find that it has quite a bit more early issues.
