The thing that's still very much missing with the whole 12VHPWR/12V-2x6 connector slow-moving-trainwreck is why anyone would be interested in using it. The only advantage it seems to have over the old-school PCIe connectors is that it can burn your house down. I'd rather run an extra PCIe power cable to my humongous RTX 4090 card, to be honest.

It's not even needed. The 7900xtx often runs at 450+ watts and 3 8 pins are enough because each is rated for 150 watts plus 75 from the pcie slot. Not to mention how much uglier 12vhpwr looks

The NYT - OpenAI lawsuit is extremely important. The concept of copyright infringement and copyright law in general is still being glossed over in discussions surrounding AI training and datasets. It needs to be made EXTREMELY clear to OpenAI and other ventures, that they can't just help themselves to whatever data they want. Additionally, we should also be discussing further laws which can allow writers or other creatives to protect their intellectual property from being used in datasets against their will.
@John_Jack10 ай бұрын
If I can train myself on how to speak English by reading the NYT, why can't I train an AI the same way? All these copyright suits are doing is making it impossible to get clean data for AI training. By mudding the water with endless copyright complexity: you're not stopping AI, nor are you going to "give it to the people," you're just making the AI worse.
@Splatterboy51910 ай бұрын
If an AI only becomes effective by allowing it to steal other people's work, then maybe we should be having a conversation about the ethics of chatbots in the first place. Relating the experience of learning a language to training datasets is quite absurd, since these instances simply aren't comparable. When an AI generates a new text, it does not do it in the same way that you would. It doesn't use intellect, it simply smashes together pre-existing data in a convincing manner. So the concept of copyright is relevant, since the data isn't being used in a transformative way, it literally is just used as it is. An AI does not know what makes a 'good text', only what 'good texts' look like. And so it just steals from the 'good texts' which are available to them. That is literally how the chatbots work, and why this conversation is important. @@John_Jack
@Splatterboy51910 ай бұрын
There's also the whole issue surrounding factuality. An AI can't meaningfully differentiate between facts and misinformation. And there are probably a lot of writers at NYT who would very much prefer for their data not to be used to produce misinformation. @@John_Jack
@Splatterboy51910 ай бұрын
My biggest issue with all of this, is this 'for the greater good' attitude that so many AI devs keep spinning. So many seem to genuinely believe that stealing from others to train AI is a universal good, and that those who write for a living should just suck it up. But no, that's not how any of this works. The stolen texts will only ever meaningfully benefit the developers of the software, as it makes their job easier, at the cost of other people's work. And I think that's a load of crap tbh. @@John_Jack

Looking at the possibilities for the RX 7800 non-XT, RX 7700 non-XT, and RX 7600 XT, this is my only hypothesis. RX 7800 will replace the RX 7700 XT at around $450, being a 16GB variant of the RX 7700 XT. The RX 7700 XT price will drop to $400 range, maybe better at $380. The RX 7700 will sit around $330, being a slower RX 7700 XT. The RX 7600 XT will be a Navi 32 die with only 8GB of VRAM (2 IO dies), placing around $280. The existing RX 7600 will see a mild price cut. I can see room for an RX 7500 set for the target of $200 and $150 using cut down Navi 33. I feel like I am being optimistic on the prices.

I mean I rarely read the terms that games make you agree to before you play them but I am aware that even with physical media these days you are still licensing the game. So even the arguments for physical media are subject to the same stuff. They can technically do this for your disc copies of games too. I think its messed up, for sure, but at the end of the day, we all are agreeing to it. I think this is becoming such a big deal because people don't realize that we don't "own" much anymore. Most media is licensed to us but the consumers assume we own it like back in the ps2/dvd era. Granted I'm not super sure if disc copies of movies and shows are the same as games, but I think its a licensing agreement there too.

My biggest problem with this digital download only, is that they charge you full ownership price and not make it clear that you are actually signing a lease agreement to be able to watch it so long as the licensing agreement stands. It was made clear as mud this could happen and that's why alot of people are pissed. If they charged an appropriate amount and it was clear upon "payment", that you're paying for a lease AND paying less, then people would be more understanding. It's bloody low and shady of Sony and other companies doing this, have hidden this info far into the "purchase agreement".

You made a really good point about the lifespan of physical media in correlation to the expiration of digital licenses. Building off your point on compact disks, basically all CDs besides specifically archival made ones will experience irreversible data rot within 50 years and become useless. For example, I have a 28 year old French magazine CD containing one of Daft Punk's earliest songs, and it's already experiencing data rot. Following in line with the digital license expiration debate, would I realistically contact the French magazine and claim that I'm entitled to a new copy for continued access? Obviously not since they're probably not even around nor have the rights to Daft Punk anymore, but the moment this situation applies to digital media, it's apparently a different story. Even assuming you make a copy to digital mediums, you're still betting on the lifespan of the digital medium whether it's a HDD, SSD, cloud, etc which can still die suddenly and you're back to square one of nothing lasting forever. All in all, I heavily agree with you that it's up to the user to extract the value from the media and, in the end of the day, it will inevitably disappear unless someone cares enough to maintain copies of the media.

If the AI is getting training data by scraping the Internet in much the same way as a search engine scrapes the Internet then I don't think they have much of a case. If they are getting access to data that you would otherwise have to pay for, but are not paying for it, then there would be an issue.

I am 0/2 on buying GPUs. I built my pc with the Intel Arc a750 because I wanted to support a 3rd party in the scene. It worked until Starfield was released and I couldn’t play it on the Arc. So I bought the only other current gen GPU I could afford, the RX7600. This was a great card until I bought my 1440p monitor. Now I have to buy a 3rd GPU. This time im going to spend more than I can really afford at once and get a A tier card that will last two to three years minimum… which looks like I only have the options of the RX7800XT, the RX7900XT and the RX7900XTX. I mean I could look at a 4070,4070ti, or even like a 3080 or 3080ti but the VRAM on the Nvidia cards makes me feel like the mid to lower top end of the Nvidia cards simply don’t have the staying power. Sure they are up to 20% faster than some of the AMD cards, but it seems to me the AMD cards will have more staying power with twice the VRAM
@randy20610 ай бұрын
7900xtx is faster than the 4080. I know that 950-1000 bucks is a lot to spend on a gpu and I know that dlss is a tempting feature. I have a 3080ti, an rx6600, an rx6900xt, and an rx7900xtx. The amd radeo software is very nice to use, overclocking the cards through the Radeon software is super easy. You don't need to sign up for or register a user name to use the amd radeon software. And with starfield, the Radeon cards are smoking fast. Also, the AMD cards just use the standard pcie 8pin power connectors. No messing around with the 12vhpwr cable.

The fact that the device is $300 and can't login to a captive wifi page is just an absolutely ridiculous issue. Sony is being given far too much slack for stuff like this and that sort of attitude will only make problems like these less likely to be addressed.

So I understand that AI uses media to increase its knowledge base and where that data comes from is a source of contention. What about the composer who listens to many artists and then comes with a new track, but we’re mad when AI does it. Is it because it doesn’t give credit to the artist it derived its sound from?
@CaptainJonathan10 ай бұрын
AI lacks creativity.
@Splatterboy51910 ай бұрын
This is because an AI does not operate on intuition. The difference is that an AI chatbot does not know what makes a track 'good', it only knows what 'good tracks' look like. So when it's generating a new track, it's leeching directly off of the data that is available to it. It does not interpret, adapt or even understand the data it's using. While an artist might take inspiration from other artists (and sometimes even getting close to copying), their own perspective/taste will always influence the end product. Ask three musicians to produce a piece of music based off of the same material, and you'd still get three very different pieces. An artist uses their inspirations to create new works, an AI generates 'new' works by leeching from the data it has, and it's therefore often hard to truly argue that these works even are 'new', or just cold amalgamations of already existing works.
@Splatterboy51910 ай бұрын
That's why the conversation on copyright in terms of AI generation is important, because it's not taking inspiration from the data it has, it literally just steals it and smashes it together, creating the illusion of a new piece.

Gonna have to disagree with how you compare physical items vs artificially manipulated lifespans. While yes physical media has finite lifespans, digital media's (for the most part) is artificially manipulated. While yes, people agree to the terms of service when paying for digital media, imo, it is still morally wrong. People agree to scummy practices all the time. The fact that it is in the agreement, does not justify its morality. Hypothetically, say someone purchased skins from that hit game "The Day Before" and with its lifespan being super short didn't offer returns, would you say you've gotten your money's worth? The gaming industry has gone mostly digital and a lot of people have been concerned regarding digital services being shut down at the will of the publisher or whoever at any time with little to no ramification because the agreement states they can at any time. But like you said, it is a matter of opinion whether you've got your money's worth from whether it be a game or digital asset. Regardless, they have the ability to absolutely shut down services the minute after purchasing. I think Kyle's silence is an agree to disagree moment, but could be wrong :P . Love watching you guys and keep up the good work in 2024!
