The constant eyes blinking are probably the key that makes all facial expressions so realistic and convincing. Amazing work!

This is something that always annoyed me about the movie A.I. The kid never blinked and people were saying "of course he doesn't blink, he's a robot, he doesn't need to! What an amazing detail" And I was like, guys, if a company wants to sell robot kid to people, they'll have to be endearing and not to fall into the uncanny valley, so OF COURSE you'll try to make him as human looking as possible, and that includes blinking.:P
@julioguerrero8849
@julioguerrero8849 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, blinking like that (every 2 or 3 seconds) is avoided when animating characters because it's not natural. Blinking happens very fast and automatically most of the times after 10 seconds, or when you turn your head to shift focus with your eyes on a subject, and as a rule of thumb for animated characters, when changing feelings or ideas. It's a whole study subject for animators. I'm not one, but took some lessons when learning Maya many years ago. These guys are doing a fantastic job with robots, and I think taking a look at The Illusion of Life book and more animation materials would make their work even more awesome.

Not just the blinking, but the eye shifting from left to right instead of maintaining direct eye contact. This is a very important thing to get right because normal conversation between two humans involves eye contact mixed with a few seconds of our eyes looking to the side or around us. While maintaining eye contact is polite and appropriate for conversation, it's also kind of unnatural for us to look into each other's eyes the entire time we're talking and our eyes often shit from focusing on one eye then the other then glancing to the side then back.

This was really well sequenced. It comes across as pretty natural looking, probably the most human-like expressions I've seen in a robot to date. I also found the hands to be quite impressive as well. Gone is the stereotype of the expressionless robot.

When I was young and just got into video games, I remember being shocked at seeing all the, to me, novel ways I could interact with the world within. And I think that's a very important emotion; when you encounter something completely unexpected yet advanced, magic is born. It's a new experience you may have considered or even actively imagined before, but never quite had the chance to live through. Seeing this video evoked that same feeling within me. I've been following humanoid robotics on and off purely out of curiosity, and it kind of always gave off the same vibe: like nuclear fusion, it was always just a decade or another away. There were a ton of supposedly more or less lifelike robots, that were supposedly conveying human emotion - and I was happy for their developers, but really, they weren't there yet, by far. And now here I am, under this relatively unsuspectingly titled video that received more than 2M views, I somehow never seen before, and the technology on display is actually astounding. There's still definitely a lot of ground to cover, but for the very first time, this honestly looked like something believable. I'm blown away. This is very well going to be an excellent platform to iterate on, and I can actually believe this going somewhere. Keep up the good work!

This is exactly my point! I am in a similar boat to yours: I had felt the same way when watching this video, seeing as I am heavily into video games. I've always had a growing interest in watching graphics and other things become more life-like. With that being said, this is something I'd absolutely love to befriend and hang out with! Something I would call my co-worker or best friend. I am very excited to see how this advances, with extremely high hopes that this becomes a common sight in the next few years!

@@KryssLaBryn, not surprising. If we really are talking about positronic brains and legitimate emotions then, ignorant and mean-spirited people more than likely will make problems for them. All I have to say to people like that is "Don't whine and cry about it when you piss one of them off and they don't just stand there and put up with your crap." Seriously. This is not a game. You won't be antagonizing a mannequin or an action figure. What you're talking to or laughing at will be able to think, feel and react. Machines can run a lot faster than you and for longer periods. Those designed to do so can hit you really hard too or just rip you to pieces. What is worse than poking a bee's nest with a stick? Poking a cybernetic bee's nest with a stick.

The feeling of annoyance is so genuinely palpable! That model looks so much more realistic with props like hair, clothing and glasses. Not to mention, how much more convincing the movements are when these animatronics are positioned as if they're in the middle of activities like using a computer rather than sitting in the middle of the room with no context or purpose like a "floating head". One huge improvement is that they’ve eliminated all that jerky rebound movement that was the most noticeable defect in early robots. This is so smooth. Amazing how fine and detailed are the movements are! It is hard to pin down what makes it so realistic, but I think what make the robot look so 'human' is that it's movements transmit the sense of purpose. It is doing what it intended to do. Well, it depends on what you mean by pre-programmed. Yes, the guy sitting there might have clicked 'this expression' that action - but that shouldn't make you think it can't just as easily interact in a situation wherein the triggers of those 'reactions' is simply YOU saying or doing something. That would seem to be the least of this AI Platformed bag of 'carnival tricks'. Language model AIs are now capable of basic reasoning. If you talk to one about its 'emotions' you might be surprised. OpenAI's GPT-3 has 175B parameters, it "read" all of the internet, so to speak. GPT-3 was about 4x larger than it's largest predecessor. It can hold a totally viable conversation on just about any subject. Google's Switch Transformer architecture has an unfathomable 1.6 trillion parameters making it effectively six times larger than GPT-3. But it 'thinks' differently. The way it processes could actually be called 'thinking'. I mean, it can't compute all of those parameters (quickly, efficiently, and at a low cost), so it uses a new layer to 'decide' which 'packets' of smaller data it needs to KNOW, yes it predicts its possible answer by the path it finds itself taking to arrive there. Or does it? If you mean pre-programmed as in one AI did not create another, you are probably right. For now ;)
