As a primarily life long hunter/jumper - I am LOVING all your videos for new flat work goals to stay challenged while I take it easy riding out this pregnancy. Your channel is a wonderful resource of things to polish myself, grow my 4 year old OTTB and teach my young beginner daughters their foundations ! Love the drone footage too ! Great to see it all coming together in the big picture.

The drone footage is so cool! I tried to do this exercise and what I struggle with is preventing the horse falling in or out in certain places where he tends to do it, and how not to counterbend him to get back on track.

That was really helpful to me because I had not been emphasizing the bend and was told that the change in posting diagonal was unnecessary. I prefer the change and the bend--they both make sense. I also like the addition of the 10 meter circles to get more bend at all 3 points. The drone footage makes all of this so much more visible! Thank you

Nice exercise to supplement lateral work and promote bend/change of direction. I also really like six loop serpentines (basically serpentines between the quarter lines) or 10 meter figure eights (same thing, only shorter). This really helps to open the rib cage and flex the spine. Thanks for another great video!

I like shallow loop that comes out to the quarter line instead of all the way out to X. Gives them something to concentrate on when they are rushing off in trot or getting stressy after canter. Good to do in trot and ask for canter as you come back to the outside track, with a horse that rushes into canter. I love them just as much as using circles.

This looks like a great exercise and the drone view was very helpful. Thank you Amelia for the excellent video (as usual)! I remember watching a clinic where the clinician had the rider do several full loop serpentines with circles at each bending point. I was amazed at what a difference it made to the horse, who started to bend better, balance better and to use her hind end more effectively. I will try this one. Also helpful would be a video on the counter canter shallow serpentine.

Hi Amelia, I was just going through some of your videos again, trying to find one that helps with the aids for counter-canter circles. The serpentine we now have down quite pat and we're working on figure 8s in canter without simple change. They "sort of" work in that he maintains collection and Schwung. However, I'm now the problem in confusing him in trying to make the counter-canter circle nice and round and not some mutated egg shape. 🙄The issue is that I maintain the aids for the canter on one lead and simply adjust weight and outside leg to ride a normal canter circle. But now I am *still* giving the aids for a canter one a given lead - while trying to adjust for a circle in the other direction! Giving me a lot of trouble. If you've covered this already, do you have the link to that video, please? Thanks!

So I am not confident with sitting trot. I am comfortable posting trot. When executing this movement, shallow loop serpentine, I understand the bend from one to the other and back again...I am wondering if I change the posting diagonal through the bends?? In other words as I travel down the long side bend left, bend right, bend left again...do I change posting diagonal as well or maintain the same posting diagonal from end to end ? Hopefully, I am explaining myself, well enough. Possibly, you can give me more clarity on the correct posting diagonal to ride the loop? Thank you!
@AmeliaNewcombDressage Жыл бұрын
Hi Katherine, Great question! Yes, if you are posting the trot, you do want to change your posting diagonal each time your change bend. Posting on the correct diagonal makes it easier for the horse to carry you and helps them to keep their balance. Here are a couple videos that might help you with your sitting trot as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZjKomV9oaqUi9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5WrlJWabriIa6c

Hey there! Either is good and up to you - I would just be consistent both directions in the test!
@tracygillis1738 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Amelia. Would I be correct in my observation that both the beginning and the end of the shallow serpentine have the same bend as for a 10 m circle? When you came past C and headed towards H, the amount of corner that you used and the bend at H, looked as though had you continued on a circle instead of going towards X, you would have had a perfect 10m circle at H, and another one at K. Is that right? It’s not like coming out of a 20 m circle?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage Жыл бұрын
Yes! A good way to practice is by actually riding those circles - that will help you get the feel of the bend

You can if you want but it is not required.

Is a change in posting diagonal necessary for the shallow loop? I practice it both ways, and feel like I can get the new bend without changing, but is it more correct to change post? esp in test?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage Жыл бұрын
Great question! Either is appropriate. Some people like to change diagonal with the change of bend to demonstrate that they are doing it appropriately.
