I was absolutely shook when I heard this in the theater. In 2.5 minutes, it totally summarizes and eviscerates the bizzaro-world standards women are held to. If America Ferrara does nothing else, she will be deservedly remembered for delivering this speech. Bravo, Greta Gerwig.

It's all humans... not women. We seem to be still locked into this celebration of victimhood. It's a VERY American sentiment that sadly so many other Western countries have latched on to: "woe is me". "Poor me" "I'm a victim". We really need to embrace stoicism which is the EXACT opposite of victimhood.
@kingofswing300010 ай бұрын
It's the perpetual victim speech. And women hold each other to, or are responsible for, most of it. Take some responsibility. Look: both men and women deal with stuff like this daily. So we're not enemies, we're made to complement each other. It's about recognizing our weaknesses more than our strengths and leaning into each for help.

I am a woman and I agree to this 100%. I also have nephews and when I look at them I notice how it can be impossible to be a man too. They have to love their kids but not too much or they’ll be seen as a mom. They have to be strong, but not too strong or they’ll be seen as jerks or if they are not strong enough they are not real men. They have to like sports and nothing romantic. They have to work hard to support their family but not too hard or it will seem like they don’t love their family or if they work too hard they’ll be seen as absent fathers. They have to treat their daughters and sons differently and if they are not the stereotypical son and daughter, people will think there is something wrong. They have to want to do housework but at the same time not like it or they’ll be seen as being whipped. They are not allowed to cry or have feelings or they’ll be made fun of. My nephews are sweet and kind. They cry and one of them plays with dolls. I worry how the world will see them, but at the same time, I’m proud of them. I acknowledge how hard it is to be a woman, because I am a woman and it is so damn hard. But I realize that it can be hard to be a man too. Barbie impacted me more than I thought it would. I remember watching that BTS shot of Barbie being assaulted in the L.A boardwalk and punching the guy and thinking "Great, another cashgrab of a movie." And then the trailer came out for it, and I saw all the hype and thought "Okay, this will be fun!" So me and my boyfriend dressed up as barbie and ken for the premiere. I remember how people came together wearing blonde wigs and pink dresses. I remember someone yelling "Come on barbie, lets go party!" In the crowd and all of us laughing. I remember the cheering of the crowd during the title card. I really wasnt expecting to have as much fun as I did, but I did. And then I took my sister to see it. I was fresh out of therapy, and struggling with my purpose. I can remember crying like a baby during the "What was I made for?" Scene, laughing with her during "Im Just Ken", and talking about the movie on our way home on the bus. The other day I was in the throws of insecurity, and thinking "Nobody looks like me. I feel so alone and unlikable." And immediately, without warning, my mind thinks back to this scene. This monologue is so important to me, and every single woman. Someone remade it in the comments from a mans perspective. And im sorry, but you dont get it. You never will, the system isnt rigged against you like it is us. (This isnt an excuse to be transphobic, trans women are women.) And in the points it is rigged against you, thats still the same patriarchy we're fighting against! My best guess is that the people who made this up are women who believe that men and women are the same, and since they show emotions often and men don't, it must be because of some societal reason. I relate to this so much, I cried when I first saw it. I was suffering in silence and felt like no one understood. This monologue (and the world’s reaction to it) helped me to open my eyes: everyone is struggling. And not just women…men too. I hate the whole “women have it harder” or “men have it harder” debate. Can we just accept that everyone has it hard? We all don’t feel like enough, we all have so many expectations from society that no one could ever live up to. We all feel alone because we can’t speak up about our pain, otherwise we’re seen as weak. I wish we could stop fighting over which gender has life harder, and instead just try to help each other and lift each other up. Women, I know you’re struggling and I’m sorry. Men, I know you’re struggling and I’m sorry. Please remember you’re not alone, you are enough and you are loved❤️

Some people have it harder than others. Women have get harder. Just because someone has it harder than you doesn't mean you don't have it bad. It's time to stop making it about you/men. And start recognizing the facts. Or don't. But we're moving on and upward. You're welcome to stay behind. :-)

@JoAkatsa2 ай бұрын
Disagree. The speech argues against having responsibility with authority. If you have a career as a woman, you will be held responsible if it fails. “Everything is not women’s fault”….. We still live in a patriarchy, so everything (mostly) is still held on the backs of men. So if (and when) we live in a matriarchy, do women not expect to be held responsible for all its failings? Imagine if a man complained on screen about being responsible for his children “everything is my fault”! No crap! You’re the parent. With freedom and authority comes responsibility. Even in the Bible, Adam was blamed by God, not Eve because the man was responsible for the garden and Eve. If you don’t want to be blamed for your authority, you will have to sacrifice your freedom. The boss is always blamed for the company’s failings, not the employees. There is no such thing as freedom without responsibility. Children have no responsibility so they have less burdens in life, but little freedom. The opposite for parents, lots of freedom, but more burdens… This is the cost/benefit to life. You can’t have an “easy life” as a woman and still expect to “work for your money”. Life doesn’t work that way.

i know right well said Mr Simp The problem is that, in barbie world, most of the w0men want big jobs but they dont know what the job is about or what skills is required. Thats how Ken end up with no job and just a vague description: Beach. Ladies are more focused on the socializing and image aspect of life but nothing to do with how life really works. Good point about the movie is that they are breaking men from the narrative that they need to chase w0men. By the end, Ken can do whatever he wants without needing to be in Barbie's life

These kinds of double standards have existed for so long and are so ridiculous that it was long overdue for them to be spelled out like this. Most of the time, movies try to (and should) follow the “show don’t tell” rule. But Greta Gerwig knew the kind of movie this needed to be: so honest and clear and firm that nobody can ignore the message. Because the message is simply too important to be ignored.

The line where she said "You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane! But if you point that out, You're accused of complaining." hit hard. Once I pointed it out that I was frustrated over that we girls can't walk home alone at night, that men usually sees us as easy targets. And I got a response where a guy said I was complaining, that I can't blame every single man, sure I can't. But I had been violated as a kid, so I don't trust men at all. So that line really went into my heart. I cry every single time I see this, but I can't stop watching!

Just because it doesn't apply to you doesn't mean what was said here is bs... I really appreciate this scene because it is very emotional to me... I was abandoned as a child. My parents weren't really there for me. My mom got remarried when I was 10, and I was happy with my new family until my stepdad cheated on my mom with my friend when I was 22. Again, I was left alone, betrayed by someone who earned my trust, who I called dad for 12 years. My mom became depressed and alcoholic. I had to support myself during university. I also struggled to have healthy relationships and often found myself in abusive ones. I got cheated on and beat up multiple times. I got through all that, and no one has ever told me that they're proud of me... not even myself... It might be true that I have a victim mindset, but you can't say life hasn't beat the sh outta me 😂 This scene is a reminder that life is just so difficult and the difficulties for each one of us just vary... and we need to be proud of ourselves even though things in our lives are messed up... Even though I have a stronger mindset now, this scene still speaks to me, and I'm glad it doesn't speak to all of you. And for guys who say that this applies to everyone, not just women, I completely agree. But please let us have our moments and gather in our sisterhood for once.
