We look back on the 1960s through rose colored lenses, remembering the peace and love movements, but the 60s were just as violent as we are becoming today. Multiple assassinations, race riots, Vietnam, the racially and politically motivated war on drugs. The difference is today we have niche markets for misinformation, whereas in the 60s journalism still had some integrity.

The issue is not so much integrity in journalism. Many many journalists and media outlets still have integrity, many don't. The issue is lack of critical thinking, questioning what you read/hear, and finally maybe most important holding people accountable.

we must come together around shared values of what political discourse means that T is presently at the center of that discourse is monstrous, I agree, but that is a different matter you see, if an individual represents the political values of 4 out of 10 Americans, then that individual should be able to articulate these values freely - otherwise you cannot have a democracy now I agree with your comment that his remark reflected values (well, "values"... stone cold moral decrepitude) which ought not even be shared by 4 out of 10000 Americans, let alone 10 - but that is a sickness of society and political discourse, and if this guy is removed, the next one and the next one to defend these ideas are already lined up

As one of Seth's Jackals, I offer this Correction: the Thomas Crooks that donated to Act Blue was a 70-year-old man. It was not the same person. EDIT: I did more research, and while it's true there are several Thomas Crooks who might be the donor, the one on that donation papers is looking more and more likely to be the same Thomas M. Crooks that made the attempt on Trump's life. It's an oversight that is unacceptable to a Jackal's standard. And for that, I apologize. However, I will address one of the commenters in the replies. @Riclmnpop, if being a Dem or a Rep doesn't matter, then why are the GQP politicians making a big deal out of this one donation? Why are they painting Crooks as Biden's personal Jason Bourne simply because he made a $15 donation back when he was 17-years-old? Please, explain that to us. The Council of Jackals await your response.

(Politically correct, where we speak of others with respect) but the crowd went wild with cheers of glee and the Media picked it up and laughed and said 'haven't we all felt like that' and DISRESPECT BECAME NORMAL. Let's bring RESPECT BACK TO AMERICA! Our newest set of voters seemed to have missed that very important part of education.

KealohaHarrison, Unless Snopes Fact Check is lying, sadly it was this young man who made that $15.00 contribution to Act Blue. It also states with Act Blue (checked their site as well) that a 17 yr. old can make a contribution under certain circumstances. Remember his mom is a Democrat, she may have encouraged him, and I certainly don't blame her.

@@kimberlydavis4772I think that is part of the problem to be honest. There are so many of us that claim to believe in these ideals and some of us do live up to them but not all and there becomes this disconnect with reality where we believe we are one thing but we really aren't. I am not trying to use this as an opportunity to attack the right but this does highlight an example I have been pointing to for years now. The right thinks their kids are being indoctrinated by schools or society etc but in reality their kids are only living up to the ideals those parents claimed to care about. I see these parents who taught their kids about respect and that people should be able to be who they want to be in this free country but then they get upset at transgender people for existing, being displayed in media and asking to be referred to as they/them. They preached to their kids about personal responsibility and accountability for ones actions but then they get upset about "cancel culture". They taught their kids ideas they thought they believed in but didn't live up to it wasn't indoctrination. To be honest this was one individual out of 300 hundred million and one incident so it doesn't necessarily speak to the entire nation however it is a stark reminder imo that with guns so available and mental health issues going untreated that no one is truly safe in the United States.

I'm Irish. While I regret the acceleration with which the social and political fabric is deteriorating in America, this is (as much as any other aspect of America) very characteristic of your country. You really need to dispense with the standard rhetoric and take a very deep look at why and how things have got this far.....and then you are going to have to spend the rest of your lives working to correct it. You have absolutely no room for complacency. I cannot think of another major Western nation that would have succumbed so easily and quickly to a 10th rate, wretched figure like Trump.

Could it be that he viewed Trump as the ultimate bully, setting the wrong example for the country? From across the pond, I wish you a safe Presidential Election, with a humbled Republican candidate and a strong and energetic Democratic one (I sense a problem here with both current candidates). I’m sorry to say that the only place I’m hearing anyone say that this event was ‘shocking and surprising’ has been from the media. Every single in person conversation I’ve had regarding the topic has contained phrases like “expected”, “no surprise”, and “it was only a matter of time”. Singing Kumbaya with our neighbors isn’t going to bring unity when we receive daily reminders (primarily from the media) of endless ‘them vs us’ hate speech, and detailed ‘plans’ about what one side is going to do to make the other miserable when they get in power. The real problem is the way we communicate, free speech is out of control.
