Thanks for speaking the truth about jobs and income in this country. The cost of living continues to increase at every turn: homeowners' insurance, auto insurance, health insurance, food, gas, and electricity. And also notice how difficult it is to see a doctor! If you can find one to take you, it takes 6 months to be seen. Why are doctors disappearing? Also,... fewer teachers and counselors in schools... packed school classes, and one counselor to 400-600 kids! More schools have parents drop their kids off, and because both parents work, parents have to give up income if the school has to close due to weather or find affordable childcare. Job benefits are disappearing. Five days of "earned" sick time a year. Contractors don't get any holiday or vacation pay. Crap health insurance. Doesn't matter if you are a full-time employee or a contractor; you can lose your job anytime. New credit cards or loans at interest rates of 28-30% -no thanks! Even Amazon Prime decreased it's benefits to members but the rate goes up each year.

Phenomenal conversation and discussion; Danielle's responses and thoughts were so insightful and hard hitting that they make one think what is unfolding right before our eyes, and to be able to separate the wheat from the chaff in terms of what we hear and see in the news and around us. No matter what the unemployment figure says, a silent recession is going on while we are told the American economy is the best it's ever been, and we can support two wars and on and on. Debt should be expensive. Period. You don’t want people to go into debt unless it’s for a good reason, such as a need like a car or home or “good debt” investments. You need SOME interest to deter people from taking on debt that they can’t afford; a lot of people are not financially savvy.
@deborahdean88679 ай бұрын
If there was no interest, it's not borrowers you have to worry about, but loaners. They won't be making money off of loans, so exactly who would they make loans too? Making loans would be more stable and conservative. Charging interest does not lead to people saving money. No interest does.

It's not just Millennials. Many in GenX are reeling from paying for our own educations/2nd educations/2nd careers AND our kids educations, dealing with the 2008 housing recession just as we were hitting our stride, then Covid ending our jobs/businesses a decade later. I know several doctorate-level friends who have moved back in with parents just to allow the entire family (parents, grandparents, kids) to survive. Anyone with private educational loans is paying over 10% interest, often on mortgage-size debt. Even if they can afford that debt payment, no bank will lend them money to buy a home or start a business. If "professional" white collar workers can't get loans...who can??

Very nice discussion. Thank you. The speculation that J. Powell's motivation is to sever ties between wall street and shadow banking (which she says is several times larger than the real banks) was really interesting. Are there sources to back this up? After being in asset markets (and retiring thanks to them) for the last 20-30 years I have also come to the conclusion that leveraged debt instruments (derivatives) trading has turned the middle class into meat bags for wall street and impoverished much of the developed world. The relationship between people and wall street was symbiotic but became quickly parasitic after waves of deregulation and corruption. I live part of the year in the Los Angeles area where median house price is 12x. This is NOT going to end well and will overcorrect (so yes on 50% correction). Published estimates of median income are low as new technologies and industries allow people to hide income from the bean counters, but most of the leveraged debt asset bagholders are badly afflicted with gold fever AND they are the ones who got capital in 2006 and 2021 and will get it again during the next bubble expansion phase.

Off shoring US tech work to India does NOT produce quality work. My town in Colorado outsourced producing the electronic mapping of the town to a firm in India. What they produced was an extremely flawed product --- parts of the town were flipped on the map and other parts of the town simply vanished. My graduate school decided to offshore the updating of transcripts from paper form to digital. WHAT A MESS!! The work done in India by 'techie experts' dropped students who had graduated (I was one of at least 60) and the records keeper challenged me that I had even attended their program because she could not find me in their electronic data base. I was saved by the head secretary who swore that I had been a student at the program. They were able to recover my records from the main campus. Other students had * inserted for their grades. Others got lower marks than they earned. Other students had files corrupted so that part of their grades were merged with other students. In addition to this corruption of files, I think this sending the records outside the USA and outside the control of the university violates the rights of students educational privacy records.

@sachsrealty Here is another thing, if anyone is leaving one job for another and making a lateral move and making the same amount of $ with significant experience, something is wrong because that means you are essentially LOSING money. Why or how? Because your wages/salary have stayed the same but inflation has NOT! It continues to rise every damn year. Employers don't want to loosen their pockets and pay LIVING WAGES. if you are spending MORE THAN 30% of your income on cost of living expenses i.e. rent/mortgage, car payment, transportation food, childcare, medical insurance, how can anyone still get by with only ONE full-time job???? the American Dream is DEAD!!! Then not have to worry about living on the streets because you're not earning enough to stay afloat. Meanwhile....these executives, CEOs, how much do they make and how much are they paying their staff at the bottom? They have nice cushy multimillion dollar salaries, yet staff at the bottom make what? Oh .25 cents above the minimum wage OR $1.00 more than the minimum wage? GTHO. They are out of touch with reality and could care less if any of us are homeless. That is a FACT because look at the statistics of the homeless crisis in all these metropolitan cities! Denver, Boston, NYC, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, etc. etc. etc. And the list goes on!!! EVERY YEAR it gets worse!!! If that isn't scary, I don't know what is!?? At this point, the gov't is NOT doing its job. MOST in their 30's and 40's cannot even afford to buy a house without help from mom and dad. UNLESS you're lucky enough to have GENERATIONAL WEALTH from your parents, grannies, etc. So what is going to happen when AI wipes out about 15% of the jobs??? So how are these same people who are living paycheck to paycheck going to have a roof over their heads?
@msingleton9 ай бұрын

The fed influences rates but it does not control rates. Last year the fed stopped raising in July and rates continued to go up until October and peaked around 8%. Yields have climbed the last couple of days, and the fed hasnt been behind that, but when you have jobs and the CPI being reported higher than anticipated thats how the bond market is going to react.
