I bought my first ebike 2 years ago. Went for cheap but quality, I got the letric XP and I can say for what I paid 1k it was a steal. For the things I use it for it is amazing. This video makes me excited to see what the future brings. 4 years ago this bike woulda been like 20k. The battery life and power is getting better and better every year. And with the price constantly dropping.

Can't wait for the tech and prices to make it possible to have all my vehicles run off electricity. Have an ebike and hybrid suv, but still have a gas maxi scoot... I'd like a bit more range or just fast charging so I can do a 300 mile trip without it talking all day.

I bought the XP 2.0 too, and it has been good. But the battery range plus frequent replacement cost is still a huge problem. Kollner starts at $6k, goes to $11k. For that price, a Honda 250 or 350 is the actual steal. Gas range is virtually unlimited, and maintenance is a LOT less than a Kollner $1000 battery every few thousand miles.

"It's a commuter bike - nothing more." It's good that you emphasized that. $6,000 certainly seems like a bargain for a new bike, but the weak batteries required for that price don't make it a good value for most riders. It would be fun for around-town riding, but higher-speed miles will deplete those batteries quickly.

That's so awesome, I wish I had $6,000 but if I was gonna spend that much, I'd just go w/ a Enduro frames w/ dirt bike rims and run a QS 273 3.5t 20kw capable hub motor so I could pack the frame w/ a huge battery... The good thing is (at least in my state) you can run a pedal kit and if you have head light/brake light/turn signals and a horn you can run it as a moped so you just need the license and you should be fine.

The real competition for this is a used Zero FXS or FX with 7.2 kWh or 6.5 kWh, although a used FXS/FX would probably be $2000-$3000 more. I would love to see a comparison video of the ES1 versus a used FXS. Also, what is the real world range of the Kollter? Without hyper miling and actual acceleration from traffic lights. Or keeping up with slow lane traffic on the highway, not being a moving roadblock.

this would be up my alley. I have been struggling with wanting to buy a Tesla because i drive about 30 minutes to work every day then have that same trip back; i know not earth shattering, but at $40 a week in gas it does add up. 95% of the time it is the right vehicle for me, but things like backpacking packing and visiting family in areas that don't have fast chargers means I have to have a second vehicle available and that negates any savings I am trying to keep (upkeep, another insured vehicle, gas etc). This actually looks like it would be an affordable and doable option that would get me back and forth to work. I will have to look into this, thank you for ending up in my feed!

Fyi insurance on a Tesla will be much higher than anything else you'd compare it to. Outside of sports cars, insurance is mostly priced relative to initial cost, and Tesla's score even worse than that as repair costs are higher than comparable $50k sedans.

It's nice seeing more options. We need emoto's to have accessible pricing if they're ever going to be more than a niche within a niche in the US. There are big sacrifices here besides just the power though. With no dealer network and an undoubtedly small community, plus it being produced by a chinese company, servicing your $6-7k moto is going to be difficult if not impossible for some. While I understand a limited budget doesn't grow out of thin air, for those that can afford another couple grand for an FXS or similar, it will undoubtedly give them far more value and save them money and headache in the long run. In fact, you can find used FXS models for nearly the same price as this, and personally I think that's a far better buy for the price.

The advantage of electrics though is that they shouldn't need much, there's very little to break (at least if it's made right) or need to be maintained on them, all should be very basic. Tires, brake service, drive belt, that's probably about it. Stuff any competent repair shop (or many owners) could handle without manufacturer support, so long as parts are available - and most parts I would guess are sort of universal, such as tires and brake pads. Having worked on a classic VW Beetle for 11 years, becoming familiar with it's thriving enthusiast community and aftermarket parts market, when I got a GZ250 I felt pretty on my own, like you describe. Parts are available, and there are shops that would work on it, but forums are few and far between, and I doubt Suzuki would be much help.

@alwaysplaythegame
@alwaysplaythegame 3 жыл бұрын
I hope you are correct, but definitely need to temper your expectations. The Metacycle has a continuous power rating of 8kw and a peak power rating of 14.5 kw - resulting in a claimed top speed of 80mph. The ES1 has a peak power rating of 11 kw - resulting in a claimed top speed of 72 mph. However, the ES1 has a 'tested' top speed of 54mph (the speedo was very optimistic) by a motorcycle publication. The Zero FXS has a peak power rating of 34 kw with a claimed continuous top speed of 75 mph and burst top speed of 85 mph. Reports seem to indicate tested numbers matching these claims. Regardless, looking at the claims of ebikes in comparison to real-world testing - and the fact that Kollter appears to have brought that optimism into the e-motorcycle space, it's hard for me to be confident that the Metacycle will have a chance to actually meet it's claims. They could likely gear it such that it 'could' reach 80mph but it would be very slow down low, likely slower off the line than the ES1. The range is the same story, with the Kollter having a larger battery (4.6kwh) than the metacycle (4kwh) and the same claimed range of 80 miles. Considering the Kollter can likely only meet that range going 25mph continuously, it's going to be incredible impressive if Sondors tops that, especially when they aren't even stating it will have regenerative braking (which you don't need for 'max' range ratings as you don't have to ever stop I guess). The Zero FXS in similar configuration (3.6kwh) has a claimed range of 50 miles and frankly I haven't seen a single tester achieve that (although they don't continuously drive

Yeah, and a Duke 390 is still cheaper too. Both gas bikes are more than "just a commuter" at that price too. It wouldn't be my first pick to tour on a 300-400 cc bike, but it is possible and I have done it. You just can't tour on a bike that needs charging every 55 highway miles. Heck, with that range you can't visit your friend 1 city away in most of North America. All theses cheap electric vehicle companies talk about how "most" people "usually" use their vehicles. So then why isn't the average gas tank size only 5 gallons? "most" people "usually" won't need any more range than that! It is almost like we want our vehicles to be able to do more than one thing!!!!
@h.d.h

@@hotdrj Electric vehicles make amazing economical and practical sense in certain limited applications, when the specific range needed daily does not vary past what the range of the vehicle is. Most people don't ride their motorcycle for more than 150-200 miles in a day, and they always stop to talk for an hour or two. That's perfect for a quick charge on the way back. But this doesn't even have fast charging! Electric cars are wonderful today because 4 wheels can support the massive battery weight more than 2 wheels. Electric cars are surpassing gas cars today, it'll be another 5 or 10 years before electric motorcycles will be ready for the USA. In other countries, electric motorcycles are wonderful. Damn suburbanization screwed up our country and we are paying for it today.
@hotdrj
@hotdrj 3 жыл бұрын
@@h.d.h Vehicles are too darned expensive for "certain limited applications." This is why north americans buy trucks and SUV's. As the 2nd largest expense (after housing) vehicles need to be more than just a one trick pony. I think PHEV's are the current sweet spot... you can drive electric >90% of the time and don't need to buy a 2nd vehicle for those other times. It may only be a few data points, but I don't know anyone with a Tesla that doesn't have (at least) 1 other vehicle. But many people have a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as their only car (commute, road trip, pull boat, camping, hardware store, etc). It is hard enough for me to justify having one motorcycle, but if I want an electric motorcycle it seems I would still want the gas one (for now). Also, from an environmental point of view, this new electric motorcycle replaces what, a Honda Grom? Something that is used part-time for good weather short trips and already gets over 100 MPG? You would need 10 or 20 people buying these bikes to have the impact of 1 family switching their SUV from gas to PHEV. I keep hoping for the "cheap electric motobike" that can truly gas... that is why I watch these videos. But if I want to go slow and have limited range I can already do that on my electric bicycle without the huge price tag or insurance costs.

@@hotdrj A couple points to address: 1. The USA has a greater transportation crisis. We need more alternative transportation methods aside from personal cars. We need buses, trains, bicycles, and pedestrians. 2. One-trick ponies which are excellent at commuting and save serious cash are great. Driving a truck everywhere just to haul a Christmas tree once a year is pretty damn wasteful. Renting a van from Home Depot for those one-off times is a whole lot more sane than buying a damn truck only to waste thousands extra on tires, fuel, insurance, blahblahblah. 3. Correct. Motorcycles in the USA are viewed as pleasure vehicles. They do not fit in the "one trick pony" categories that really save money. In other countries, which didn't build freeways to get to the nearest Walmart, an electric motorcycle is perfectly suitable. Lower top speeds and smaller size makes them fit into the urban landscape much easier. 4. I think the real problem with motorcycles is that they pollute so much. The average motorcycle in the USA pollutes 10 times more per mile than the average car. Thusly, I believe that the gains per vehicle from switching to electric motorcycles is much higher than switching to electric cars.

I've had an ES-1X Pro (the "Enduro" version) for a little over a year. It's a fun bike, and it's my primary transportation for running local errands around town. Top speed I've gotten it up to is 65 mph, and that was downhill with a tailwind. Most of my local riding is at 40 to 50 mph, and I have squeezed 42 miles of range out of it and still had 5% battery left. This is with dual batteries, slightly hilly terrain, and me being a heavier rider. If you live on flat terrain or your weight in pounds starts with a "1" instead of a "2", you'll obviously get more range. It's an excellent commuter bike.

How's it's performance? Is it (US) highway capable? There's a lot of offerings that are the electric equivalent of a 50-150cc scooter or motorcycle, suitable for urban commuting but not capable enough for the longer distance and higher speeds needed by a lot of US suburban-dwelling commuters. Then there's super expensive high-performance electrics. A lot of people (Americans in particular) wish for something like this, maybe the electric equivalent of a 250 - highway capable (marginally), 50-80 mile range, and decent price. This is finally an offering that hits those points.

It would be nice to see a touring model in the near future, with comparable range as many such gas powered bikes. For commuter type vehicles, EVs seem appropriate, but there still seems to be the issue of range/charge time ratios. A gas touring bike can go 300-400 miles and refuel in minutes. An EV seems to take about half or more recharge time for the range they provide. Tech is always improving, so hopefully that problem might improve in the near future as well. There are some promising hybrid models slowly making their way to the market though, but mostly from China or India.

I don't think we'll get that fast charge time until they upgrade the battery technology unfortunately, or change it to something like supercapacitors if some of the research there pans out for cheaper versions to use for storage as well as the braking. I think it's in our future as long as we don't blow ourselves up or devolve into decades of war that steals the resources for other things. I'm really looking forward to it, I just hope we get to see it sooner than later.

@YourLocalRaccoon

Assuming it doesn't get hit with anything remotely sharp, doesn't get frozen or overheated, and doesn't get bogged in mud or water, it should last as long as a well maintained bike chain a'la 20k+ miles or so. Maybe less as it rubber but at that point a belt is sub-$100 so it's well worth it. Not to mention reinforced belts that can lengthen the life of a belt even further. -A moped rider, mopeds use belts in their cvt.

I paid 2k$ for a brand new 3000w version ( the price was 3k in France but I could combine 3 eco bonuses) mine has a chain and can reach 75kph, in a few seconds 9800w peek power) it's a 50cm3 eq, so you don't need a driving licence. I use it for commuting in Paris, which is more than enough speed and can eat any road defects., I bought a second battery for 800$ and I never really need it. I stopped paying gas for more than 1 year now since I charge at work. This vehicle is perfect for me and beats anything in this city. Since there is no driving licence needed, there is no risk of losing it. I can only recommend this bike, too much shaming on EV and chinese bikes, this thing is super reliable, safe and well built. 10km eats 25% battery in sport mode, below 25% speed is limited to 25kph. no CBS on my version but for 2k....it's the price of an electric Mountain bike...

I suspect this category (Kollter, Sondors, etc) will end up competing both with e-bicycles AND motorcycles. Which is a tough spot to be in. Need a short range urban commuter? An e-bicycle is easier to park, store, license. Want the flexibility of covering long distances and highways? For now only a motorcycle can cover those uses.

I'm not sure, I can see it going either way. It depends on the city. Some European cities are packed with scooters, and I think this is the perfect alternative, or an equally capable electric scooter of course. Some cities are really good for cyclists, but I think most still aren't, and I am not surprised if in the latter kind, people are too scared to ride a bicycle. It will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out, but the good thing is there will be something for everyone, and won't be polluting the air with emissions or noise.

I know electric motors have a different torque curve and typically shaft RPM is lower than an IC engine, but HP is HP at the end of the day. My ideal electric bike would be 300 mile range or 150 mile range with a battery that would be easy to carry a second one on the back, 30-40 HP+, sumo style, fully adjustable forks and rear, led lighting, configurable torque output (ride modes), and a $10k OTD price tag.
