Every year in America over 11,000 babies die on the day that they’re born.
Fault Lines travels to Cleveland, Ohio-America’s infant mortality capital-where the rates of premature birth and infant death in many neighborhoods exceed those of developing nations.
In a country that spends so much on healthcare and believed to have one of the best neo-natal intensive care units in the world, the U.S. is failing to ensure the health of its newest citizens.

A good contraceptive program set in place would be a start. Counseling women who are overweight and have hypertension to avoid pregnancies that can quickly turn high risk. I was never told that my weight and age (40) was extremely high-risk.

susique333 There are many babies who are born prematurely and the mother did NOTHING wrong. I have none of your criteria for who should be allowed to have children and I had a placental abruption forcing my child to be born early. My sister also had none of your criteria and she ended up with preeclampsia, her daughter now 3 years old was born at 26 weeks. My sister had zero health problems. “Counseling” doesnt change a womans desire to have a child.

Single mom who has to go back to work right after birth?!?! SMH and tears. It's why I'm studying to be a Doula and teach prenatal yoga. It's part of the problem that poor single don't get the support for the 9 months and post birth which could prevent this crisis.

We need to move back to using midwives... Pregnancy doesn't need to be held in the same building as people who are dying and sick..pregnancy isn't a disease or illness..

I just read Kris Jordan's Wikipedia entry. It tells me everything I need to know about him. He also was the one who introduced Ohio's heartbeat bill, which all but outlaws abortion. Yet he refuses any help to women forced to bring their babies to term. There was also this little item under "personal life:" In July 2011, Jordan was investigated for fourth degree domestic violence after an altercation with his wife in which she called 911 for help.[9] Jordan told the Delaware County sheriff's deputies who responded to the call that his wife "got a little upset … girls do that."

Smh. In these comments, all I see is stuff about young parents and drugs and alcohol and stuff like that. There are so many other factors. Sometimes the mother has no control over being pregnant (yes. I mean that.). Sometimes the parents are older. Sometimes there are medical risks like hypertension or diabetes. I was born almost two months early and fluctuating between 4.8 and 5.1 pounds. If I wasn't born, me and my mom would've died. I was in the nicu. It's not just irresponsible people. Actually think deeper for once.

My sister had a severe case of preeclampsia and her daughter weighed just 1 pound and a few ounces. She was born in October and due in January, she was just 12 inches long. The baby is now almost 6 months old and doing well, long out of the NICU and home with my sister on oxygen. She's just now wearing newborn size clothes so it's unknown how well she will do in the future. No she wasn't using drugs or alcohol and doctors say she should never try and get pregnant again because of how severe the preeclampsia was which nearly killed my sister.

The hospitals are so backwards with delivery, every technique used at the US hospital are money driven and totally backwards. Even African women can give birth to babies without the aid of a hospital and they babies are naturally induced, the umbilical cord is not cut until it's done releasing food, the baby goes right to their mother's chest to regulate temperature, the baby immediately goes to exclusive nursing only with no pacifiers no formula no IVs etc. They get immediate sunshine and fresh air, no vaccines, plenty of oxytocin from mom, no feeding schedules. The neonatal intensive care is totally backwards in the US and US pride thinks it's the other way around.

The infant mortality rate is skewed. Other countries don't count still births as deaths. So if you excluded those, America's rate would be 40% lower.

Hmmm...first lady is a SINGLE mom with THREE OTHER children. This is the real problem. If you are raising your kids without "baby daddy" common sense dictates you should probably keep your knees together. Yet you did what you did what you did and now this baby is suffering... while she says she is HAPPY he is going to be in the hospital for a few more months so she can work. Seriously> Where are the FATHERS???

Sad for the precious Bebe's. This single mum's got it backwards, finish your Education first. If you got a boyfriend please Use birth control, fellas do your part too. Do not believe the female when she lays the lines. I see so many fatherless kids among the BLK cm. The woman said she was happy baby was early? Why? Because...they know in USA there are state backup system. Stop blaming politics & the Gov. Not there bloody fault these women made crazy choice. Abortion is not good either, what's funky when the woman say$ " She don't believe in abortion but will have premarital sex before marriage." These cities are not caged in You can pack it & move to another city for jobs. Do it before a Bebe comes unannounced. Remember we need to stop putting others to fault when SHIte happens. These poor Bebes. Rip. Have a good day.

Lucy Yorky - social healthcare is crap in Europe. I have been living here as an American and I can tell you that they all complain that those that can afford a private doctor, will - because govt doctors and the few nurses they have aren’t adequate. The govt pay for a doctor is up to 1,200 Euro per month that the best of them go private. Due to the lack of nurses, family members have to sit with their sick family member in the hospital to ensure bandages are changed and food is fed. If you can use someone else’s historic comparisons, the truth of it, why would you want to travel the same bumpy road?

I love how we’re basically attributing the high infant mortality rate of black people to racism. How come everything in this country Hass to be about race. Black people and liberals that don’t get their way just say it’s because of racism. Do I feel sorry for these babies that are dying prematurely? Of course I do. But why does that mean I have to pay for their medical care, or pay for the mothers to have government assistance (taxpayer assistance). Why am I being forced to pay for these peoples poor life decisions that got them in the situations they are in now. 99% of the people in this country are in the situations they are in, good or bad, because of their own life decisions
