I cannot imagine living without light for 50 days. I can tell the pastor is gearing up for that. He must be a huge source of encouragement for people who feel depressed, suicidal and hopeless during that time. What a blessing he is to that community. Stay strong Pastor!

I've been up there in 2000 traveling around the the US and Canada as young man from Europe. There was a conference in town and no vacancy at the hotel. The owner let me stay on the sofa in the lobby and took me around running errands. We even went to the whale bones you showed and the "northern most point of the continental US". Back in the lobby I was honored to try muktuk and another guest offered me his spare bed in the room. Great community up there and a good story to tell even 20 years later!

That was really interesting Bert. I am so glad that the Native People have a break up there and are treated with respect. It makes my heart glad. Where I am in Canada we are colder than Barrow, we usually it -50 for a few days. Nothing drastic. We get light each day, [no sun]but not until about 9am and it's dark at 4 so it's not bad. They have light bulbs now that make it look like daylight in the house, which is nice. Thanks again Bert. hugs Jessica, I pray that Audrey is feeling better, and that your war injuries [keeping the fire going] heals as well. lol take care

The further you are from the ocean, the colder it gets. Fairbanks can get to -60 (not often, though) and it's a few hundred miles away from the ocean. Once you get to -50, it's painful. I don't know how you deal with it. I live in nome, and it's unusual to get below -20.

I swear Bert, your drone footage can be incredible. You can really make Alaska seem like a place you read about in a novel or in your dreams even more so than when I was there. Your videos really make Alaska look so incredible and the footage you take is incredibly good. The people were that friendly and nice back then which I miss. The Pastor Bert speaks to describes Barrow as it was in Fairbanks to a tee. When we did FTXs The wind could really be bad at Ft. Greely as he says it is in Barrow there near the sea so it could get really cold in Fairbanks to. Keeping my mind occupied was important so I find it to be more mental than physical as to the continue darkness. I still miss it dearly. Fantastic video!

Hello Somers family!!! So a couple of months ago, I found your KZbin channel while I was seeking out information on life in Alaska and your channel has been an absolute blessing to my husband and I! In order to tell you why youve been a blessing i have to tell you a very short snipit of our story lol...So My husband and I know we’ve been called to full time ministry! We both currently live in central New York State and we have been really seeking God for direction, location, timing and connections! We just so badly want to do his will and we have felt like we’ve kind of been in a standstill waiting on God for when its time to move. Last year we received a very profound and accurate prophetic word that the word of the Lord to my husband and I was that we are called to ALAKSA! Never in a million years would I have thought or desired that lol, so I said okay Lord....if this is your will for us....please change my heart on this matter! Ill go wherever you send us, but to live in Alaska!? Needless to say...this is why i was seeking out life in Alaska information...I want to be prepared with an understanding of life there if God does decide to bring us there andI found YOU!!!! I HAVE WATCHED ALMOST ALL OF YOUR VLOGS! I have been incredibly blessed to feel almost like I know you all through how honest and real your content is and its honestly given me a great desire to come there....like i wake up excited thinking that maybe someday God will make a way and we will be in Alaska. Sorry for the story book....i just wanted you all to know that your channel goes far beyond just giving people information because in this season, as my husband and I have been carrying an extremely heavy weight for ministry and the will of God, and as we ourselves have been going through a pretty dark season.....we have gained so much hope by connecting with you all through your channel. You and your husband and your beautiful children are amazing! Sending you so many prayers and so much love! God bless you all! THANK YOU!

Loved watching this video. I really enjoyed the interview with the pastor; all the things brought back good memories for me, since my Dad was a pastor in Sand Point out in the Aleutians. Many of the things he mentioned hold true in the islands too - diverse community, high costs, struggles with the amount of light during the Winter. Our island also struggled a lot with alcoholism. But even now our family thinks back warmly to those days we spent in the North Pacific. I would LOVE to visit Barrow now. Thanks for the video! ~Kurt
