So far, the comments about going through Customs between the USVI and the US mainland have not been correct. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Public affairs officer Jeffrey Quinones (in an online article): "What is seldom known is that the U.S. Virgin Islands is outside what is called 'Customs territory.' Since the acquisition of the Virgin Islands by the U.S. from Denmark (in 1916), by treaty, customs fees are assessed using local law. When traveling to one of the U.S. insular possessions, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa or Guam, you are required to clear Customs and Border Protection and are entitled to a $1,600 duty-free exemption, as long as you are there for 48 hours or more." You also don't need a passport if you are a US citizen. Any government-issued ID is acceptable.

As it turned out, my return flight aircraft was changed without any notification and I boarded a MAX. I'll have to say, the MAX is a much nicer aircraft than the nearly 30 year old dash 800. Better seats, overhead switchgear, engine noise/performance, personal device management, and ambient lighting scenes. I'll be switching my flight search criteria in the future looking for MAX aircraft especially after the FAA has given them the green light and my recent experience.

My understanding this the max was much more due to AA than WN. It was AA (which was all 737 in the size at the time) that was purchasing a number of A320 neos. Boeing attempted to run interference and were told by AA that they would buy half a320 and half 737 if the 737 met certain goals such as the needing the same type rating as the NG and being done by a certain date. WN wanted a new 737 but didn't put the same restrictions, specifically in regards to the fairly rushed production schedule.

4:14 "at the behest of Southwest Airlines." Maybe you know something I don't Jeb, but I think it was AA that strong-armed Boeing into building the MAX when they made a giant order for a Boeing re-engined narrow-body that didn't exist yet in 2011, when they were bulk ordering both A320ceos and A320neos. WN is a 737 operator through and through so they were probably expecting a new 737 variant, but they did not make the first order.
@lvthud3 жыл бұрын
AA went with the A320's for a couple of very simple reasons, Airbus was one of the companies that financed their exit from bankruptcy and availability, they get new planes quicker than going with just one manufacturer. And yes WN did make the first order, Dec 13th 2011, next order was NAS Jan 24th 2012.

My understanding is that they DIDN'T redesign the landing gear. They moved the larger engines out further on the wing so that they could then mount them higher (also retaining the flat bottom of the older NG 737's). You're pictures of the 737 NG and MAX show this different engine placement well. Thus the center of thrust moved some, which was was the reasoning behind MCAS to help maintain the same characteristics of older 737's, therefore pilots wouldn't need separate additional training for the 737 MAX if they already were qualified on the 737.

I love these videos, being an aviation-crazed kid. I can't wait for my travel this summer, flying Fairbanks-Anchorage-Seattle-Nashville. Lots of flying, planespotting, and fun to be had! Keep up the good work. Can't wait until you can start flying internationally again!

I’m a MAX fan, and I have no worries flying it

You wouldn't be such a fan if someone you loved had perished on those two planes that crashed. What Boeing did was unforgiveable. They gambled with customers lives.

Hope they have the avionics fix AND trained the flight crew... It should be illegal to not identify the equipment type in full. Especially on the EIC.

I will only go on American Airlines… and the last few trips I have flown I have gone first class. Treated my Sophomore in high school in October

Love the video Jeb! Background music was great in particular. I think the answer to whether the MAX should have been built requires highlighting the two perspectives. From an engineering perspective, probably not. The aircraft is based on a 50+ year-old airframe and so this was not the best circumstance in which to stuff technology into it that would compromise its aerodynamics. We've seen what has happened as a result. Nevertheless from a business and economic perspective, it seemed to be a necessary decision to build the MAX. If you're on this channel you're probably already aware of the war between Airbus and Boeing over their respective narrow body jets and Boeing's decision to introduce the MAX upon the announcement of Airbus' A320neo. I personally don't think either perspective is wholly right or wrong but somewhere in the middle. While Boeing must make decisions to remain competitive and desirable to airlines, they must never ever compromise their engineering and safety principles. The MCAS debacle is the price they paid (and continue to pay) for their negligence and oversight in that regard. I'll always remain a big fan of Boeing. I just hope they stop cutting corners and follow best practices. They are critical to the industry.

I'd be nervous flying on the 737 MAX family but flying is the safest way to travel. Still, two crashes of the same plane six months apart is worrying. Great video, Jeb!
@Jack3md3 жыл бұрын
That was prior to the fixes and updates to the plane, all MAX's use two Angle of Attack sensors instead of one, and the software updates always give the pilots full control, overriding the MCAS. It's by far incredibly safe now, those two crashes cannot occur again due to the changes made.

Build the Max - of course! Good basic platform, now with improved performance.

Thanks for the video, beautiful scenery! Qantas domestic business has already returned to full crockery, glassware, choice of meal including hot, wines, tea/coffee and that’s on a 60 minute flight, shame about the AA catering but maybe it will return soon.

Hi Jeb You are right that Boeing installed larger diameter engines in the 737 MAX. Airbus had already installed these engines without difficulty, in the A320, which had taller gear. You said that Boeing redesigned the gear BUT Boeing did NOT design taller gear that the 737 MAX needed to fit these engines and that is one reason why the aircraft remains fundamentally unsafe. Boeing's bean counters cheaped out and told the engineers to find another solution. So, the engineers moved the engines forwards, so that they could be raised to clear the runway. Boeing then found that the 737 MAX could pitch up, stall . . . . and . . . . possibly crash. Once again, the Boeing bean counters insisted on a cheap elastoplast solution. They found an app, for that, that would push the nose down. Boeing do not have a great deal of experience designing and building computer controlled aircraft. Boeing did the math, and decided that an MCAS failure would be an extremely rare event, but they were wrong about that. Boeing decided not to tell airlines or 737 MAX pilots about MCAS, how it worked, how it might fail and what to do if it did. Some 737 MAX pilots experienced MCAS failures and were able, by a combination of experience, skill and luck, to save their aircraft, crew and passengers. On 29 October 2018, Lion Air Flight 610 had a faulty angle of attack sensor in the 737 MAX which caused the MCAS software to push the nose down, the pilots could not control the aircraft and crashed. On 10 March 10 2019, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 had a faulty angle of attack sensor in the 737 MAX which caused the MCAS software to push the nose down, the pilots could not control the aircraft and crashed. Boeing have just tweaked the MCAS software because they have 500 MAX aircraft on the ground and they do not want to pay for major structural modifications. Boeing also added a second airspeed sensor but, if one is faulty, MCAS will not know which is faulty and which is good. That is why all Airbus aircraft always have THREE angle of attack sensors and THREE computers, which can vote 2:1, to overrule faulty sensors, faulty computers and/or faulty software. Boeing have NOT increased the height of the gear and put the engines back where they used to be as they should have done. That is why the problem has NOT been solved. The Boeing 737 was a great new design when conceived in 1964. After more than 50 years the Boeing 737 has reached the end of its development cycle. The Boeing 737 MAX was a flawed design and it remains flawed. Will there be a third crash? Nobody knows for sure but probably a case of when rather than if.
