American and British English can be very different, the grammar, spelling, words we use and of course PRONUNCIATION! This lesson looks at how we say words differently and the different ways we pronounce vowel and consonant sounds in British and American English. This is NOT an American accent lesson! I can't do an American accent! I'm British so sticking to the British accent! ;-)

Others have done a lot of vocabulary that travelers would encounter like rest room vs loo. I think that's great & necessary, but I'd enjoy a mix of that and words and phrases used in the more rural areas where a tourist leaving the larger cities/tourist areas might encounter. Nothing is worst than using a word/term then being asked for a clarification, then the answer is just as confusing as the original word/phrase. I remember when, as a young child, neighbors had relatives visit, over the summer, from Australia. One was a girl my age & the neighbors asked my mom to have me hang out with her so she'd have a friend. We only understood about half of what the other said. It got better over the summer, but it was frustrating for both of us. @@LoveEnglishwithLeilaSabrah

Here in Canada I'd say it's about a 60/40 or maybe 65/35% split between American and British pronunciations. I knew many of these, but I learned something from this video. I thought our British friends pronounced zebra like "zed-bra" whereas it's more like "zeh-bra" (no d).

didn't know the short "a" sound was the British way to say "aunt". I live in New England and I thought the whole US says it with a short "a" sound. I do agree in America a lot of our "T" letters sounds like the letter "D". in America, you would get laughed at or be mocked for saying it "water" instead of "wader", well at least me personally got laughed at and mocked lol. If we are angry or frustrated, yelling, raised voice etc... at someone we will say "water" instead of "wader". "I said come to the WATER!" In both cases, we do pronounce the "r" at the end of the word "water" We say "route" in both ways. People knows what you say if we pronounce it either way. "Vase" is a tricky one. Me personally, how I pronounce it is that it rhymes with "face". Think the "s" sound in the word is between an "s" and a "c" sound. A lot of Americans pronounce "either" both ways. We do pronounce "semi" both ways. We do describe cell phones as "mobile phones" too. For "yogurt" we do say the "t" at the end, other areas might be more of a hard t and others a softer "t" I live in New England, so I am not sure how similar it all is (everything I said above this) to the rest of the country. One funny thing though, if someone outside of New England comes and visits you can ask them "want to get a grinder with me"? He will say "sure. I will drive" Me: "Why are we at a store?" Him: "we are going to get a grinder". Me: "That's not what I meant. I mean a grinder at subway". Him: "I am confused". Its so funny hearing someone's reaction when I said I am eating a grinder. But in reality, the restaurants that sell grinders has both terms on the same menu "grinder" which is also a "sub". But in New England, if you ask "want to get a grinder with me" they will know what you are talking about.

Although american accent is hard ti listen (hard to understand for non-native engkish speakers), I prefer american one as it loose, sweet and soft to to speak but British one is more clearer than American one. A british accent is easy to understand and does not require much attention in listening or watching body language like its american counter-part.

Seems like a rule that each word will be pronounced all the way round in US English than it would be in UK English. So for me as a non-native speaker I will always have the us pronunciation in my head first, instead of the uk one. But I think it's because I too use to watch more us movies. But after all I really prefer the uk English, because to me it sounds more posh ;P

The cinema is indeed influential when comes to make an accent easier for you. If I see a predominantly British casted film such as Enemy at the Gates or Quills, It helps to develop a british-like accent, but all this naipe Castle falls down when I watch one more time an american production. Fortunately, I only imitate the californian, I'm strong enough to shield myself against the Michigan's or Virginian's influence.

Not all American English is the same, either. Several of those examples can be pronounced many different ways depending on where In America you're from. Water, for example. Most of the time, South Philadelphians would pronounce it woo-der (woo, like boo). Can't. I pronounce can't somewhere in between those 2. Sorry, that's the best I can explain it; I'm terrible with the IPA. Aunt absolutely depends on where you're from. I pronounce it like ant, but people from the Southern States say awnt. Route, for me, at least, depends on the context. If I'm talking about a path/road/navigation, I say root, but I'll say raut for networking equipment or the power tool. Pasta is Italian, and as such, the American version is actually correct. thank you. Address is contextual. We'll use the "British" version for the verb, but "American" for the noun. "Make sure you address the envelop correctly, you wouldn't wan it delivered to the wrong address." Semi is contextual. We'll use semai for trucks, but semi: when using as a prefix for half (which, yes, does technically apply to "semi-detached-tractor-trailers")
