In this video Heimler walks you through Unit 4 Topic 1 of the AP Government curriculum. There are at least five values that all Americans agree on: individualism, equality of opportunity, free enterprise, rule of law, and limited government.
However, depending on an individual American's ideological commitment, either conservative or liberal, the interpretation of these five values may be different. So in this video we look at how conservatives and liberals understand the application of these five values.

Question: Modern day Republicans are considered conservative and Democrats are considered Liberals. During the birth of the Republican Party around Lincoln, wouldn’t Republicans have been considered Liberal for pushing to end slavery and the Democrats considered Conservative for seeking to preserve slavery?
@Armitaged1
@Armitaged1 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. The definition of each party has changed over the years as the Republican party aligned more with the church. After the goal of the Republicans were completed in the 1800s with Lincoln being slavery's abolition, they moved to a new definition slowly and now are the conservative eye people see them as. Basically a different party under the same name. Hope thats a good explanation, I'm no Heimler.

Idk the exact details and information of this but there was a party switch where ideals changed parties in America’s history

You are right, but some time along history, the parties ended up switching ideals.

There was a party switch in the 1900s cemented during the civil rights movement. The initial switch had a lot to do with the Gilded age and corporate vs the people's interest and involvement in government.

Correct, but during the 1970s, there was a shift in Ideals as the republican party now pandered to the interests of a more racially conservative (racist) south, while the democratic party now pandered to the interests of a slightly less racist north. This was mostly through the actions of LBJ, who was a liberal vice president despite being in the democratic party, facilitating the switch. Do not be fooled by conservative propaganda that states that this did not happen.
