American Bandstand 1964 - TOP 10 - There! I’ve Said It Again, Bobby Vinton

Airdate: January 11, 1964
From Philadelphia, PA (Did you know that Pennsylvania has 20 electoral votes, lol 😬)
This clip has a lot of American Bandstand and music history in it including:
1) On the same day this episode aired, they taped the last 3 episodes from Philadelphia.
2) Bobby Vinton’s “There! I’ve Said It Again” is #1 on Bandstand today and on Billboard for the 2nd week in a row and it will be #1 for 4 straight weeks in January. On Feb. 4 it will be replaced at #1 by The Beatles‘ 1st hit in the U.S., “I Want To Hold Your Hand”.
3) That was the opening for the very first show taped from Hollywood (Famous was probably there somewhere, lol) It aired on Feb. 8. The next day, Feb. 9, 1964, the Beatles appeared for the first time on “The Ed Sullivan Show”. The clip was shown on a recent KABC anniversary show in LA. Unfortunately, I don’t have any more of this episode, but at least we know it exists - probably in the Dick Clark Productions vault. Believe me, I’d love to see that whole episode as much as anyone.
4) This is the last Top 10 clip that I have. ☹

I was born in 60, 1968 my dad had Bobby Vinton's greatest hits album, played it on the motorola console stereo on sunday afternoons, I knew all of Bobby;s songs word for word when I was eight, When I was in my early 30's I bought the same CD before I had a CD player, it was the first CD I ever bought. I bought a JVC Stereo CD player shortly after. 60's were simplier times, glad I got to live them.

I can remember when the show moved from Philly to Hollywood. We Philly-area kids, who used to rush home from elementary school to watch AB, followed by our favorite cowgirl, Sally Starr, and were quite disappointed with the move. Plus, Dick Clark pulled up stakes in the entire Philly area, including South Jersey, and sold his "Steer-Inn" hamburger joint. Sadly, the place never stood a chance because of the overwhelming popularity of McDonald's in the area, but we were sad to see him, and it, go, as he would make occasional appearances there (I still have one of his colored promotional pictures from his appearances). And as to this clip, if it doesn't bring a tear to your eye, then you're not a baby boomer. Unfortunately, the talents of a performer of the calibre of Bobby Vinton, combined with the innocence of that time period as reflected in the couples as they slow danced to this song, are gone forever. It certainly was a special, special time for all of us who were lucky enough to experience it all.

I am one of those that got to experience this special time.I was born in 1950 and my sister in 1948.We would rush home from school to watch American Bandstand and we danced together and our mom would also join us sometimes.Miss you mom.

Thought provoking when I found this, and what you mentioned, _____ I am ` echoing right back to you`, our times as "The Best and Happiest era" that you, nor I could never explain .... if one had tried to captured what is now a Time in History (VS) now; no one reading from the Late> 70s, 80s to now. IMPOSSIBLE! When I watch any one of these Classics, I cannot remember of any horrific violence at the ratio we have here, at this this time. A tragedy that is the first thing you read, now. Our era was not perfect, but the pure environment of innocence, having all of my family at home, and do I ever miss my mom and dad. For myself these memories heals for a short time as healing because I know how beautiful this country was as you, I lived and experienced ~~IT~~. Thank you for reading, and very grateful I found this one Special event from Philly's American Bandstand, and read what you remembered. Since I was born in 62 this is a little before my time. I love a lot of the sixties, this will have to grow on me. I remember when I was about 7 or 8 my Mother dragged me to a Bobby Vinton concert. At 1:38 he's having a good laugh. I wonder if these regulars are thinking about the show's end in Philly and what they thought of the first California episode when it aired? Despite the similar set decor, the vibe in Cali was completely different. Looking back with my aging by the day memory, Philly AB felt like teenagers going to the "hop", and I kind of liked that familiarity; but I got over it. 🤓 Famous would never bumpty-bumpty-bump! As I write this, Joe Biden has been declared our next President. More importantly to me, for the first time a woman, and a woman of color will be our Vice President. Excellent clip Aaron! There's so much to discuss here & add to your comments in the info section. First off, I heard the Johnny Mathis version of this song first, but it's such a great song, it didn't matter who did it. Bobby did a wonderful job with this! Speaking of which, it's amazing how quickly things changed musically within a couple of weeks here! The Beatles were the end of an era & the beginning of an era all at the same time! Can't remember the last time that happened. Maybe the 90s sometime? I have no example at the moment. Lol Also, being that this is one of the last Philly episodes, I kinda sensed a sadness from the kids, cuz they knew this was it. I don't recall ever hearing or seeing the Philly kids talk about their feelings about the show moving West, but I know I would've been a little salty seeing the show with all these new kids doing the same dances, but a bit differently than us over here. That clip at the end was good. You're a true AB collector Aaron! I would've never thought to record or keep that little tidbit. I guess now we're finally seeing the bottom of the barrel of your collection. I have an idea though. You can make some polls where we can all create what a typical AB Top Ten list would've looked like for specific weeks based on the actual Billboard chart, tally up the votes & bam! Just an idea to help keep the ball rolling. Anyway, very appropriate giving us a Philly clip as Philly did their thing this week, (YAY!!!!!!), and a great way to end such a stressful week. Especially on my fave video from September 20, 1969 with the tiny clips of color! I found pics from that actual day from a site about NYC trains. It was a particular train line's last weekend in service before the elevated tracks were torn down. This was in Brooklyn. I don't know what time those pics were taken that day, but if it was after 1PM, I wonder if anybody in those pics on those trains watched that episode that day. My brain can be crazy sometimes. Lol

Watching this episode of " AB " always leaves me sad & wistful. I was born in '46, so I am a true Baby Boomer. And, I so remember the beginning : " Rock Around The Clock " , " Heartbreak Hotel " , all the Doo Wop groups, from essentially '55---'56, to this song , Bobby Vinton's version of the '45 hit by Vaughn Monroe, " There, I've Said It Again" . Those 8-9 years mark The Golden Era of Rock & Roll. Because the next songs to make --#1were-- all part of The British Invasion. That event, + the move of "AB " to Hollywood, signaled a truly seismic shift in popular music from The East Coast, to LA & The West Coast. And sadly, for many singers & groups, the 2/7/64 arrival of ---------well, you know who-----ended careers & a certain innocence in the music . Only the ones who could generate new music from within their group------ the 4 Seasons & The Beach Boys --------could & did survive & thrive, in the new musical landscape. I was 17 y/o, a 2nd semester HS Senior, & I had just moved out to my own place-----when Bobby Vinton hit #1 with " There I've Said it Again" , my own personal favorite from this wonderful guy. Enjoyed the mellow clip today Aaron. It was definitely needed after a tense last several days. This can also be a bit melancholy as well as we are closing in on the end of the Philly era on AB and the move to California. Good job sneaking in the brief clip of the beginning of Hollywood era for February 8, 1964. One day later, Ed Sullivan introduced some foursome from England to the U.S. TV audience. Uh, the name escapes me for the moment, not sure if they made it big here. Anyone have any guesses? I seem to recall the name of the group is the same name for an insect but thst's all that I have. In 4 weeks from this episode of "AB", Dick Clark would be here in LA, where I have lived since 1995, with a 4 years here from 9/70, to 12 /74 in Redondo Beach---------The British invasion would be a full-on event , & pop music would be in for huge changes, Yes, in just 4 weeks from what we see here, EVERYTHING would be so very different. @Rickyticky Katz Yes, there are several episodes, both kinescopes and original tapes (some in color) in the Dick Clark Production vaults. As far as I know, they have no plans to release any of these due to music copyrights. I am pushing for them to be released using the popularity of NRRA archives, ABdancers and my channel as reasons to do so, but it’s a long shot.

We want to pretend like this was a simpler time, but it really wasn't. It was a well kept secret that most of these well dressed, All American boys who danced on AB were gay, and apparently even Dick Clark was aware of it. After the show moved to California, many of these same boys were frequently beaten and attacked back in Philly. Overnight they went from national celebrity to being terrorized. Once Bandstand left Philadelphia, the show grew increasingly irrelevant. Many times ABC would preempt the show for college football. Bandstand was the last ABC show broadcast in black and white. It didn't go to color until September 1967.
