From Hollywood, the kids dance (somewhere between slow and fast) to Dusty Springfield’s hit song that, while not a #1 hit nationally, it does peak at #6 today.
Hootenanny is a musical variety show that began in April of ’63 and will finish its run next month. It is hosted by Jack Linkletter (son of Art Linkletter) and is filmed live at college campuses around the U.S.
…..And in about 14 hours from now, the U.S.S. Maddox will be attacked by 3 North Vietnamese Torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. In response to this unprovoked attack, in 6 days, Congress will pass the “Gulf of Tonkin Resolution“, giving President Lyndon Johnson “broad use of war powers to combat North Vietnamese and local Communist attacks…”, effectively starting the war in Vietnam.
Airdate: Aug. 1, 1964

Thanks Mario! I think they were being told to get off the floor for some reason, probably so Dick could review the caravan of stars schedule. But it is odd they were shuffled off before the song even ended, I agree. And Dusty is the best!

If i was around back then, I would be getting ready for the new television season: Some of the new shows on ABC, "Bewitched", "The Addams Family", "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", "12 O' Clock High" and my personal favorite, next to "Bewitched", of course, is "Peyton Place". As for the leaving the floor early--I would have done some supermodel poses, as I hate to waste a good tune :).

And to add to your information Dancing in the street, by Martha and the Vandellas was released the day before the air date of this clip. The song was recorded during the same week that the Supremes’ Where Did our Love Go” , which would become the groups first number one hit single, was released .

Ah, Aaron -- the great Dusty Springfield. What a talent! My favorite female songstress from the 1960's UK. Quite the panoply of songs in The Top Ten and dance styles on the floor. Musically, everything from Motown to the emerging British invasion popped up on The Top Ten that week. The dancers are seen strutting the cha cha, the Slauson, the Pony, and Its west coast version, the Surfer Stomp. I rarely get political on these threads, but the Tonkin Resolution proved a travisty. The declassification of documents and tapes available at the Johnson Library reveal what historians could not prove: There was not a second attack on U.S. Navy ships in the Tonkin Gulf in early August 1964. Furthermore, the evidence suggests a disturbing and deliberate attempt by Secretary of Defense McNamara to distort the evidence and mislead Congress. Without the full picture, Congress could not offer the checks and balances it was designed to provide. Subsequently, the White House carried the nation into the longest and one of the most costly conflicts in our nation's history. ~~ Don

Hi Don. I love Dusty too. Id listen to her sing the phone book, lol. And that top 10 list is filled with major pop classics, I agree. As to the Tonkin Resolution. I refreshed myself on that this week. I left out the second attack for brevity, but you are so right. as you mentioned the “second attack”, which never happened, actually lead to the resolution granting Johnson his new power, leading to Vietnam. I don’t ever get personal on here, but my dad fought in Vietnam in ‘68 on a gunboat. He suffers to this day from medical issues acquired through that (dam) war. We are still paying for it. (Ok, I’m done) IMO this clip nicely shows the dichotomy of innocent teens dancing to the pop tunes of the days, blissfully unaware of what was right around the corner. Thanks for the comment Don!

Aaron, thank you for sharing the personal poignancy of your father's experience. Apologies for being redundant, but your channel continues to provide a look at the respite that AB's weekly hour of entertainment gave viewers devoid of the turbulence of the era. I agree with you, it is a dichotomy between innocence and the ravages of geopolitical engineering. ~~ Don

In England, Dusty is a Icon. To many she kicked the door for every Blue Eyed Soul Singer many of which you may have heard of from Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Natasha Bedingfield, Adele, Jessi J, and fellow Irish Lass Nadine Coyle formerly Of Girls Aloud. She also did The Motown Special Ready Steady Go in 1965 where she and Martha & The Vandellas did Wishin' & Hopin'. It made history because it was the First Time A Black & A White did a Duet together on UK TV and at that time, there weren't many British Blacks on TV.

My pleasure. Dick Clark did alot for UK Artists back in the day. In fact there was an Artist named Chris Clark who recorded for Motown but her Career never took off. She instead became an Executive at Motown co writing the script for Lady Sings The Blues.

Oh I forgot to tell you that back in the day there was a Short Lived Version of Top Of The Pops in the US but people didn't really watch it. To them American Bandstand was over and that was that but is it true that if you were a UK Act and you did Top Of The Pops, you pretty much arrived musically. I know so many acts appeared on The Show. Liberty X (The Popstar so called rejects), Girls Aloud and even Nu Schooz with I Can't Wait. What other US Singers appeared on the show.

Dusty Springfield (Born Mary Elizabeth Catherine O'Brien) is considered to be The Queen Of Blue Eyed Soul and to many UK Historians she kicked the door open for future Blue Eyed Soul Singers from Europe. Lisa Stansfield, Amy Winehouse and of course Adele. If you can, check out other Irish Born Singers who are great at doing Blue Eyed Soul. Nadine Coyle (formerly of Girls Aloud) and Ruthanne.

DANCER DON: great insight, as always, regarding your comments below...So agree. I hope I don't lay an egg here and so not trying to sound too political, but I can't help not ignore the elephant (pardon the pun) in the room: I find a parallel kind of thing in the news of the day 1964 and and the disturbing news we hear on television today...Just on a slightly different scale and rather warped. In '64 the kids escaped to AB at least for a while...In 2018 we escape to the world of 1964 "AB" and all the memories it had to offer...Again, at least for a while...Very ironic. :---)

"this is THE number one record" - BS ! Only in Dick Clark's corrupt mind & ulterior motives. Wishin' & hopin' was released weeks before A Hard Days Night in May & never reached higher than #6 in the charts. The 1st full week A Hard Days Night was released it shot right to #2 on July 25 & was #1 August 1 & 8. Complete garbage top 10 chart.

Wishin' and Hopin' did hit number 1 regionally in the US, as well as number nationally, so it very well could have been #1 in Dick Clark's location the week of this show. Sounds like you have sour grapes and an axe to grind.

@@stuckinthetimemachi1You have a more twisted agenda than Clark or his network & a delusional axe to grind. The Beatles song was never only #1 in some places & only #6 anywhere as Clark claims on his list !! The Beatles went right to the top & were at #1 by all music publications - Billboard, Cashbox, & Record World. It's up to Clark to state HIS LIST & HIS #1 are subjective, his own invention, & not backed by any research. Then he can falsely put Wishin' & Hopin' as #1 & claim his weekly list is a created regional list, as you invent the excuse for him without any facts to back it up. But Clark never even says his list is regional. It's suppose to be the NATIONS top 10 & it's a knowing fraud.

Paying closer attention, Wishin' and Hopin' was chosen number 1 for the week, by the show's own poll, had nothing to do with the national charts. As good as the Beatles were, there were plenty of worthy artists, including Dusty Springfield, who deserved high praise.
