American Bandstand 1970 - Make Me Smile, Chicago

Airdate: May 23, 1970
Chicago’s very first top 40 hit, “Make Me Smile”, is at #17 today and will peak at #9 in 2 weeks. The song is just the first part of the group’s 13- minute, 7-part musical suite “Ballet For A Girl In Buchanon” that was cut out for radio airplay. Founding member and songwriter James Pankow had no idea their record company was going to release this as a single and was shocked when he first heard it in his car in Los Angeles on Boss Radio, 93 KHJ.
Smiling on the dancefloor today: Famous Hooks (0:48), Frank Vanderpuil (1:02), Andy Soto & Buggy (Teresa) Escoto (1:19), Steven Rice (2:30) and Theodosia Dayton (2:44).
For 60’s & 70’s TV nerds (like me), if you saw the movie “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”, this commercial, with Susan Dey, was shown while the hippy girls at Spahn ranch were watching an episode of “Happening”. (Paul Revere and the Raiders sang “Mr. Sun, Mr. Moon”. That episode of “Happening” first aired on March 29, 1969) I don’t know if the commercial was actually playing back in ‘69, but it was definitely shown during this episode of Bandstand in 1970.
“The Partridge Family” will premiere in 4 months on Sept. 25 on ABC.

I still have the September, 1970 Seventeen magazine (which, back then, was 3 times the size of today's magazine), which features Susan (in her maxi coat) on its cover, along with a Fall fashion "spread" inside. She was a "Supermodel" ( before the term was coined) to us young teens back then. Many of us wished we could look like her, if only for a day.

The first time I saw Chicago was at an outdoor festival in Nuremberg Germany in 1976. There were over 100,000 people there. They were so good that the people brought them back for five encores. On the last encore they said that they didn't have anymore Chicago songs so they did "Got To Get You Into My Life" by the Beatles. I almost died, it was so good. Fast forward to a couple of years ago. I had a backstage VIP Meet and Greet with them. I showed them pictures that I took at the Nuremberg concert. It made them smile.

One commenter said that Walter had to retire due to health issues. And of course Peter has been on the outs with the others for years and Danny also for some reason dropped out of the picture.

Been a fan of Chicago since junior high and that was 1971-74. Now there is a Russian cover band playing these songs again and I am falling in love all over again. The reason the cover band is so good is their respect for the Original music and the musicians by practicing long hours. Good things come to people who work hard!!

Hi Aaron & Thanks for this awesome clip! Like early 1960s Bandstand clips, early 70s clips are just as rare. I grew up in an Hispanic community where the flip side of this record was even bigger than "Make Me Smile"....The "B" side was "Colour My World". It truly was the slow dance national anthem at house parties! When the kids danced to it, they would bury their faces into each other shoulders. All you saw was just a lot of hair ...ha! :---)

Hey Aaron, so glad you put up another clip from this particular episode, it's a great one. This song by Chicago is one of those forgotten hits that never gets a real mention when discussing their music. I happen to like it, as well as the whole medley it comes from. When recording actual albums was a thing! I think it's safe to say that starting with the '69 season, this became the normal format of the kids already on the dancefloor ready to dance, instead of coming from the bleachers & gathering themselves to dance & the song has like 1 minute left. Lol Also, the energy was great here. There were more serious dancers coming on the show by this point, which was needed. But still great that my boys Famous & Frank were still in the mix. I liked the excitement of the dancers flooding onto the floor as the song starts and watching them jockey for their spots, but it would seem out of place and old fashioned by ‘69 when they stopped doing that. Compose James Pankow said that he was initially upset when he first heard "Make Me Smile" on the radio, because the number was part of a 10-minute long suite which also contained "Colour My World." He was annoyed that the record company had chopped his production up into pieces. But Pankow warmed up when those royalties started coming in.

The first long-version song to get on the air was "Light My Fire" by the Doors, about a year before "Hey Jude."

It's actually the first part and the very last part of the "Ballet" skillfully edited together. I had no idea, back in 1970, that the longer work existed, and that the flip side of the single, "Colour My World", was part of it. I've heard Chicago perform the full suite twice in live concerts. The first time, I was confused when they didn't play the song's end as expected.
