I'll remain dubious that it's a win for multiple reasons. 1.) I doubt there's a weight savings 2.) By having a shorter range LFP portion you're going to shorten the LFP portions overall range 3.) No details on energy density, self discharge rates, costs, charging speeds, ... I think it's everything they said it is, but there is a lot as usually that they haven't said, and those are the things that almost always are the drawbacks, of which I only mentioned a few potential ones.

Gemini is LFP cells + LMO cells. Their site says, the anode free, uses a manganese rich cathode. I like the idea cause the LMO cells only go into effect after the LFP's 150 mile charge is used. So the LMO cells charge the LFP cells, so they are being used only after the vehicle depletes the LFP portion of the pack. So it really isn't that complicated, you daily charge the LFP portion and the LMO kicks in on road trips. I am guessing their Aries II is LMFP they say it an upgrade from LFP. I only say that because they speak about manganese and iron in their sustainability section. JUST ADD #25

They did an interview on Autoline After Hours yesterday. The one sobering point made was that they think we are eight years behind the Chinese. I do wish them luck. They said they would have limited cell production by the end of this year. I wonder how similar this is compared to the new CATL battery you talked about yesterday. One thing is for sure, battery technology is quickly evolving. It has a long way to go. Who knows what the mature composition will end up being for an EV.

This was what was going to happen with capacitor-battery hybrids, so that capacitors would take the initial charge and then transfer it to the longer range battery. In fact you could even add a third component of the capacitor to what these guys are doing: 1 Capacitor, 2 LFP, 3 long range battery. So capacitor for quick top ups (fed by the LFP) and short bursts of acceleration, LFP for daily driving, and other Lithium battery for long range.

The CEO of the company was interviewed on AutoLine After Hours last week. He sounds like he has his sh*t together and he came across very knowledgeable and confident w/o any BS. They are still small and it's early days, but holds a lot of promise. I think having a secondary battery will be especially applicable for towing (which most people only do occasionally). But I don't think this is a long term solution since battery energy density will become good enough in 5-10 years that you won't need a dual/hybrid approach. For now it's a possible option.

Who needs a 600-mile battery? After about two hours of driving I’m starting to calculate how much longer/further I have before my next stop. By two and a half hours usually my bladder or stomach or back is complaining. My distance between charging stops on long trips is determined by this and charging station locations, not the size of my battery. Charging time is a function of how much I need to get to the next charging stop, not how big my battery is. 2018 Tesla Model 3 LR. I’ve twice done multi day 2000-2500 mile trips, and many more in the 500-1000 mile range. I’ve driven ~900 miles in a day twice. My charging stops, unless a meal stop, are usually just enough time to take care of those bodily functions - bathroom, buy snacks and drinks, and walk a few minutes. At least for Tesla in the U.S., battery sizes are big enough and charging is fast enough today. Larger range batteries are a convenience, but I wouldn’t spend money to buy anything over 300 miles of EPA range, and I certainly wouldn’t spend extra time on the road to charge a bigger battery.

Fiat has proposed a battery modular system where you would have a fixed one (or two?) battery modules for everyday use, and then rent from the dealership up to three extra battery modules for long trips. This would avoid bringing that extra non-used battery weight around and would reduce the cost of the vehicle. If the dealership is not far away it would be easy to implement. For my budget and car use this system would be perfect. Hope it becomes reality.

this just seems over complicated. if the battery cant handle the excess charge cycles thats more over complication and potential excess replacements that it needs to be. would be more beneficial to have it entirely LFP if people are not using the 150 miles daily, then why have an over compilated battery that will never use that excess? when your range drops in half when its over 105F outside you will over use the "backup" battery that cant handle the charge cycles too. on paper it sounds good, but unless they can make that battery lighter, and take far more life cycles then it make sense. just make the battery lighter, less earth materials, cheaper, and have at least 350mile real world range at or under 60kwh in size...one type, keep it simple, and make sure it can be charged to 100, and at least 3000 cycles.

Anode-free explained. All batteries have an anode and a cathode. But battery makers also use the term “anode” to refer to the active material placed on the battery’s current collector during the manufacturing process. This material may contain graphite or silicon. We create our “anode” without this material. Instead, during “formation” - an essential step during which the battery is charged and discharged - small amounts of lithium plate onto the current collector. This process forms the anode in our anode-free battery.

LFP has a very good charge rate and a very low self discharge rate. The snag is poor cold weather performance and if allowed to stand in a discharged state they will brick themselves. The charge and discharge stop is also abrupt. It causes a significant voltage surge which has to be managed.

I have been wondering why companies haven't made EVs this way for a while. Lyten have very high energy density, are cheaper than NMC (maybe even LFP) cells, so you could make a sodium ion 150 mile range battery and a lithium sulfur 450 mile range battery and you would only use the extra during a road trip. Seems perfect, more range for lest cost. The problem is that the lithium sulfur batteries have only 400 charge cycles. So I think I figured out why they don't do this, and it is the warrantee. Keep in mind that the US and the EU both require a warrantee for the battery of 8 years and 100K miles. For most people that arrangement would work fine. But if you bought this car and used it as a rental, or a taxi, it ain't going to last. Since the manufacturers can't control how the car will be used for the warrantee they just can't afford to take that chance. That is why they are moving to LFP, aside from cost, is they are far less likely to ever need to be replaced under that warrantee.

The Aries LFP battery pack specs are underwhelming. The 79kwh pack is 550kg, giving an energy density of just 140wh/kg at the pack level. That is on par with other LFP cells at 170wh/kg given the weight of the pack casing, wiring, bms, cooling, etc. taking it down from 170 to 140. What is below par is that they only rate that 79kwh pack for peak power of 120kw/(160hp) where the average EV LFP cells can discharge at 3c continuously, which means 240kw(320hp) from a 79kwh pack. So these LFP cells in the Aries are definitely geared to long cycle life and low power, more like an energy storage battery than an EV battery. Having two 400v packs in a car, 40kwh LFP and 50kwh NCM would save you 400lbs of weight compared to a 90kwh all-LFP pack, and the logic of using the NCM only for trips over 150 miles would extend its life, but you throw away the safety factor of having an all-LFP pack. If you are going to do that, might as well go all-NCM and save another 200lbs weight. NCM is now pretty reliably 1500 cycles, and with a large pack like 90kwh, each cycle would get you 350 miles. That is 525k miles until the battery is down to 80% capacity, so the car still wouldn't be dead, just down to 280 miles range. For most drivers, the car would be 40 years old before it hit 525k miles.

Bird in hand theory. I'll take CATL's battery that is on sale commercially versus a start-up's battery that may be available someday that might or might not work. And I'm sure the Chinese are working on this anyway

Hey Viking, do you think there's a chance that cars will simply be able to just exchange batteries like a flash light? I have a 2016 leaf, and 2015 volt. If I could swap out my leaf battery again with a better battery, it would be awesome.

I thought CATLs new battery put everyone out of the market😀. It is laughable that some KZbinrs talk about science and battery chemistry when they probably only know about chemistry or battery chemistry are those 2 words

It was only yesterday you said that CATL batteries owned the market and that anyone can undercut them for a while, but eventually they would fail. I'm skeptical, America doesn't do anything cheaper. There have a myriad of magic battery solutions all of which have failed.

All these dang promises and please I don't get mistaken Sam you do a great superb job on keeping us well informed. Maybe some futuristic new age Nikolai Tesla reincarnated and shows how to tap into the earth's electromagnetic field for all energy needs. One "battery to rule them all and in the darkness illuminate them"! Then those inner earth races emerge and tell us to pay up as we are drawing energy from their grid😢😅

Not impressed. 12% off is a black friday discount. And these batteries still rely on Lithium, which will become a problem as demand grows and NMC EV's just recycle themselves.

Yeah. BMW are not going to be using Aries. The power density is so low. Peak power from the bigger battery is only 130kw. So will not give a good performance EV. Range is fine but car will be very sluggish.

Who knows? Maybe we'll eventually get to the point where an EV car battery will be about the size of a shoe-box, give a 1,000 miles of range, be safe, be able to be simply slotted into place by the car owner and able to be bought at Walmart, for $20.00.....

Using one battery to charge another battery is nothing new, but has the obvious disadvantage that energy will inevitably be lost during the transfer from one to the other, which can only reduce range. Who are they kidding? I'll await independent testing, & predict there will be sub-optimal results. Prove me wrong...
