If you're ever driving through the Rockies in Colorado you can see heards grazing in the fields alongside the highways. There's people that own lots of land and some choose to have bison rather than cows or horses. There's even an area you can go that is labeled as a bison viewing point, where you can be at a safe distance and watch them roam.

hearing “Easily escape from predators” Is something I rarely hear about these beasts, Bison will gore the crap out of any predator if given the chance. It’s crazy, their agility and hard heads are the reason they thrive in the wild. Only the big guys have a chance of taking one down. Not to say that they aren’t prey, but it’s pretty interesting how predator-like they can be at times.

There are plenty of videos of Zebra / Antelope / Deer killing larger predators with 1 kick because of their hooves. And you see how skinny they are? Imagine that same kick from a leg 50x the weight. You might genuinely have a better chance of surviving a shotgun blast.

Male herd animals rarely lead the herd... they protect it from predators and spend most of the time scanning for threats... meaning predators and other males. A dominant female leads the herd and decides when it will move and where it will go for food, water, and safety. The idea of males leading herds is kind of projecting human attributes on to other species.

People think bisons like to be petted when they don’t. If you’re chased by one. Act assertively, yell loudly and/or vigorously wave your arms. Throw something that may break their gaze or concentration on you. If you cannot avoid contact, get as low to the ground as possible and protect your head and torso. Playing dead may stop an attack and pray like crazy.

One of my favorite stories ever. The Plains Natives of old used to kill wolves and wear their pelts while hunting bison. And it made it easy, because the bison only sees a pack of a few wolves coming up and is like, "oh its just some wolves", not knowing it is humans dressed in wolf skin. This would allow them to come literally right next to the bison so they could get a few good close range shots in. This means bison literally didn't fear entire packs of wolves.

Escape from predators? Whenever I was around the Bison heard in North Dakota they were the meanest, nastiest, short tempered animal I ever came across. Think of a rattlesnake on 4 legs that can easily catch up to a 4 wheeler and you have the disposition of an average bison.

I know it sounds like im lying, but I kid you not, I've pet a bison in Yellowstone. Our rental car was a convertible, and there were bison crossing the road. The roof malfunctioned and wouldn't go back up. The buffalo literally just walked up to the car. Thankfully it wasn't aggressive. I was 9 years old, so I didn't realize that petting it wasn't a good idea. One of my favorite memories.

Quivot, or yarn made from bison fur, makes the warmest, softest socks and mittens you'll ever knit. It's outrageously expensive, but I can see why. Nobody is going to volunteer to take a slicker brush to those beasts.

Funny that in Buffalo, NY those massive, majestic animals are referred to as bisons. In fact there’s several local industries named “Bison” brands of everything from beer to dairy products, even the city’s famous NFL team “Buffalo Bills” are named for them yet neither Buffalos or bisons herds ever existed anywhere near the Northern Eastern US.

The herds used to be as large as 30 thousand head. It's amazing how fast they were wiped out.

“Easily escape from predators” I think a bison would gore a predator like a wolf (or a wolf pack),a fox,a coyote,a grizzly bear,a kodiak bear,a brown bear,an american black bear,a cougar,a mountain lion,a puma,a lynx,an alligator,a crocodile,a snake,an aguile,etc…if it has the chance instead of running of them,because these are the natural predators of the american bison: Natural predators of the american bison: Wolves Foxes Coyotes Grizzly bears Kodiak bears Brown bears American black bears Cougars Mountain lions Pumas Lynxs Alligators Crocodiles Snakes Aguiles Those are the natural predators of the american bison,and an american bison would probably gore them if it has the chance instead of running,if it doesn’t has the chance of goring them,thats when they run at their impressive 44 mph (70 kmph)
