Canadian law states that you can be denied entry, if you have been charged with an offence; you don't have to be tried & found guilty. Yes, 20 years is long, and the passage of time should have canceled this obstacle. But I don't know the veracity of this claim. If substantiated, this would most certainly be discriminatory overreach
@jamesbrown9721

It depends on the seriousness of his offense. If he commited a sex crime & had to register as a sex offender, that 20 years would make no difference no matter how minor the sex crime. That’s wild! As black peoples, we need to start travelling smart and know the law! ### After ten years from the date you completed your full sentence including probation, you may be eligible to return to Canada if you only have a single misdemeanor conviction that is not considered a serious crime in Canada. Misdemeanors that involve a weapon or harm to others can ban the offender for life if considered serious criminality north of the border, so some Americans with a misdemeanor will never be allowed to enter Canada unless they file special paperwork####

This happened to me crossing back into the U.S. from Quebec. My car was searched for over an hour and I was to told to sit down and do absolutely nothing. They had a problem with me even reading a book or playing on my phone to pass the time while they searched my car. What makes it even more ridiculous is that I am a U.S. citizen with a U.S. passport. This is despite me driving a nice car (a Tesla Model S at the time) and not wearing anything that would be considered ghetto. Mind you I was crossing into Vermont at night so the experience was my fault at least in part. I gotta say Quebec/New England crossings are indeed the worst for melanated people this side of the western hemisphere. Going between Washington and BC on the other hand I had no problems whatsoever and I have crossed there twice thus far. It really depends on the when and where at the end of the day how much discrimination one will experience; there are different levels to it. Be blessed, be well, b1!

I crossed that same border coming back from Quebec City 20 years ago. I had a rental car with Illinois plates. I entered Canada thru Detroit-Windsor, but I decided to return to Chicago via New England, and the Pennsylvania pike. I got to the Quebec-Vermont border in the morning, and the border guard actually invited me in for coffee and asked a few questions. But we also talked about other things. He just seemed like a nice lonely old man who wanted to talk. I remember him jumping out of his chair to go outside and quickly let this young blonde girl thru. As he did that, I was looking out his office window with disgust in my heart.. So I still knew this old man was a race soldier, just a charming race soldier.

It isn't about a felony conviction, but rather being convicted of a crime that would be an indictable offence in Canada. If what you are convicted doesn't have a Canadian equivalent, there would be no problem with admissibility, on the other hand some crimes like DUI are considered more serious in Canada and would make you inadmissible. (of course there are ways you can sometimes be let in even though you have a prior conviction, but it does take some effort)

But as someone who has family in Canada and has traveled back and forth extensively (via car and plane), I’ve never had an issue at the border. Unless you’re a Canadian citizen, you don’t have an automatic right to enter Canada. They can do a background check, and you can be disqualified from entry; even for petty or misdemeanor offenses from 20+ years ago. It sucks, I know. But White or not, you’re still a guest in someone else’s home and they make the rules on who gets to enter the country.

We ought to stop being accepting of unfair laws and work to create a fair system that applies common sense. Just because something is legal doesn’t make it fair…..slavery was legal but doesn’t make it fair.

I live in Detroit, MI across from Windsor, Ontario Canada. I never heard of Black people having this problem at the Borders here . Maybe because Windsor and Detroit have Black people crossing the border 24/7? It looks like the border police there were being bullies to THIS black family. I would file complaint with the Border there.

Canada 🇨🇦 wouldn’t let a Felon to crossed into their country, 20 years is not enough for some Canadian Immigration Federal Law’s maybe for him could be 22-25 years Parole. My cousin USA 🇺🇸 Citizen can’t go to Mexico 🇲🇽 or Canada 🇨🇦 for 22 years because he serve time in Jail for two years here in Washington,State .

He was on probation, that was it. If you have a criminal record, you are likely to be denied entry to most countries. i agree they should have treated everyone equally regardless of race or ethnicity but the fact he was on probation means he has criminal charges and is inadmissible to canada.

I served alongside some Canadian soldiers. Back then they were not stoic per say but didn't really make direct eye contact. I just shrugged it off cause I had no more info to reference. Plus I didn't care. But now I have the info to put stuff on perspective.

I agree, that action was to me and act of ws, and loop holed abuse of power, and like many people 6:43 have said on this share is that we must know the laws for the Canadian border / rule to the card game/ do's, and don't 's for them, and us.

One has to assume that it was for something that would be an indictable offence under Canadian law. (Although I wouldn't be surprised if they turn away people convicted of something that would be a summary offence if they aren't forthcoming about it when they ask the question)
