@@TheNatashaDebbieShow Just to add a bit to the Curry information. Curry has been popular in the UK for a very long time. Initially sold in coffee houses. First recorded curry on a menu dates back to 1773. The first dedicated Curry restaurant was opened by Sake Dean Mahomed in London in 1810. The majority of Indian restaurants are actually run by Bangladeshi people. There are about 12,000 curry restaurants in the UK. In London there are 6 with Michelin Stars. Making curry the food with the highest number of Michelin Stars.

Hi, I suggest you watch the video that this information was taken from by CGP Grey, The difference between The United kingdom, Great Britain and England explained. It's very fast but good clear graphics. There is a lot of history around the subject of Ireland / Northern Ireland and the 'Troubles'. It's a can of worms and a deep hole to explore with hurt on all sides. Chicken tikka masala was apparently created in the UK and didn't exist as a dish in India. It runs a close second to fish and chips as our national dish, although their position as the nations favourites are argued.

Great Britain is a purely geographical term, and refers to the largest island of the British Isles (ie. the big island with England, Scotland and Wales on it). On the other hand, the UK is a political term and refers to the sovereign nation containing the countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Its full name is the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

When America was still a British colony it was normal for England to be referred to as what would now be the UK. It is only with greater nationalism in more recent times, that people get very offended mixing up England with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. America and Germany are federal states. The UK has moved to "devolution" which is one-step along the road to become a federal state, but it has only lead to even greater calls for full independence and the break up of the union. When the UK narrowly voted to leave the EU this has further fueled calls for Scottish and Northern Irish independence.

Most Brits and Irish balk at Americans calling themselves Irish, Scottish or Welsh because of one of their ancestors. We also don’t hyphenate ethnicities. If you’re born in the UK you automatically get the full British / Northern Irish tag and may add that their parents come from [insert country]. As for fish & chips being the national dish, I wish it was but it’s probably more likely to be the Sunday Roast. Chicken Tikka Masala is undoubtedly the most popular dish. Personally, I’ve never acquired a taste for it but who can argue with 60million Brits.

Queen Elizabeth II and Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, were married on November 20, 1947. That means that they were married for 73 years at the time of Philip’s death, at two months short of 100. Their wedding cake, meanwhile, made by London bakery McVitie and Price, was a nine-foot high four-tier fruitcake, which weighed around 500lbs, and included 80 oranges, 660 eggs and over three gallons of Navy Rum. With rationing still in place following the end of World War II, many of the ingredients had had to be shipped in from overseas - giving it the nickname ‘The 10,000 Mile Cake.’

The UK is a country of countries; England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. UK means 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Wales, Scotland) and Northern Ireland; this is abbreviated to UK. Never go to Wales and say it's nice to be in England, or you will become unpopular very quickly. The Welsh even have their own language. Citizens of England, Scotland and Wales are all British because these counties occupy the island called Britain. Citizens of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are all Irish because these two countries are on the island of Ireland. India broke up into three counties, India, West Pakistan and East Pakistan, then i think it was East Pakistan that changed it's name to Bangladesh. Due to Britain ruling India for over two hundred years there is a big Indian culinary influence in the UK. Fish and chips is still very popular in the UK.

The UK has always been, at its heart, a multicultural, movable, melting pop depending on when in history and what your perspective. As for your question re: British Virgin Islands - the remnants of the British Empire in overseas territories, disputed and occupied areas (including Northern Ireland) and the Commonwealth is a big ol' piece of work to understand, suffice it to say the crown and their appendages are pretty flexible and ferocious in keeping their fingernails in anything worth anything to them.

Alternatively, if you come from the other part of the community and imply that they’re British, you’re likely to be ‘Harshly dealt with’. Its important to note that in India and Bangladeshi food served with a sauce or gravy is what we call curry. Food is often produced dry for local tastes. Whereas Westerners (Brits) like it in liquid. Wales (constitutionally and rather controversially) is actually a Principality rather than a country. Hence the reason that Prince Charles is the Price of Wales and the queen is the Queen of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and not Wales. The Welsh flag ( the red dragon) is not represented on the Union Jack flag because of this. However everyone treats Wales as its own country. Scotland, England and NI do not have Princes. Politicians will often say that Wales is its own country to placate the Welsh population but the unwritten constitution enshrined in thousands of laws dating back hundreds of years have never been changed, so unfortunately Wales is still legally a Principality. Ben Ben is the bell and the tower it is in is called the Elizabeth Tower. Hope this helps a bit. Standby for lots of Welsh comments.....

Chicken Tikka Masala was first served in a restaurant in Glasgow, Scotland when a customer complained that the Chicken Tikis was to dry so the chef, allegedly, added a tin of Campbell's condensed Tomato Soup and Chicken Tikka Masala was born.

The Queen does not enact laws. She, and the Royal Family, have devolved power to Westminster, taking money instead of power. This was a result of our civil war in the 17th century. So, all laws are passed by Parliament (elected by the people) which are then enacted by the (unelected) House of Lords. Bills, which are legally abiding acts of Parliament are laws, written into the constitution. The people must obey these. These include things like immigration controls, rights to protest, changes to taxation and so on. Statutory Instruments, or white papers, enacted by Westminster, are general laws, enacted into general public law. These include things like food standards, traffic laws, penalties for breaking the law and so forth. I hope this information helps, coming from a UK citizen.

Because this was an act of attempted cultural elimination we are well aware of how angry we should be about it. If it wasn't for an ongoing, concerted effort by Welsh speakers in private and public life, Welsh would be a dying language. In fact, I've been told by a few English that they hoped the Welsh language would die. The language still faces both opposition and pressures...so yeah. Historical suppression that has made the language something we have to fight for to keep alive, as that historical suppression has created present day vulnerabilities.

Fish and chips originated in the UK, but neither of the components did. Potatoes aren't even native to this country! Chips originated in France and frying fish in oil came here fried fish is something that was by here Western Sephardic Jews from Portugal and Spain, via Holland. Historically its been popular because, as a small island its cheap and easily available, particularly since the railway network was developed as this meant that fresh fish could be shipped to inner cities within hours. Like most 'national' foods, its peasant food that is the best known.

Chicken Tikka Massala is a sweet mild curry which is an adaptation of Indian cooking, a fusion if you will. It is very popular here but I doubt it is India. We also have a few Indian words in English which were absorbed during the colonial era. The Welsh refer to Wales as Gods Own Country and like Ireland and Scotland were subject to brutal and oppressive rule from England, including their languages being banned. Yes they have separate languages. So No no no Wales is not apart of England.

I would say that there is no official dish in the UK but I would prefer fish and chips over Chicken Tikka any day. @@pjtufty66 Certainly Queen Victoria was very fond of curry and ate it everyday in her last years. However you have to remember that she was not only Queen of England , she was also Empress of India. Although she never visited the country, she was in love with everything Indian and surrounded herself with Indian servants.. The English middle classes tried to copy everything she did, which very much popularised curry. However, you need to remember that the middle class were a tiny proportion of the population. For the vast majority, that is the working class, it was all they could do to keep body and soul together. I doubt if many of them had even seen a curry. Then we had the two world wars and the period between when food shortage was a problem. I grew up in the 1950s. I never heard of curry. We were still struggling with the food shortages following from the war. My abiding memory is the smell of boiled cabbage. I first had a curry when I was 18. I had just left school and I was lodging with some expats. I cannot say I liked it, but it has grown on me. As I said before, the real curry explosion really came with the influx of Indian peoples in the 1960s and 70s.

Curries in general are from the India region but several generations ago some Indians moved to the UK, opened restaurants, and developed chicken tikka masala. My understanding is that in India curries are usually more aromatic and less about spicy heat. In the UK however they found British people wanted spicy heat, so developed the chicken tikka masala to be more about the taste than the smell. Chicken tikka masala is most definitely a British dish evolved from Indian influences. Curiously fish and chips was also a British dish developed by immigrants.
