Hey Favour. The UK does have rights, in fact global human rights were based off of the British Magna Carter which is our version of the constitution it just was never written down on paper I believe. Someone feel free to correct if I'm wrong, I'm sure I read this somewhere at some point.
@nathaneccleston98243 жыл бұрын
Magna Carter didn't actually give rights to ordinary English people, rather it just weakened the power of the King (King John at the time), in relation to his Barons. However, it did guarantee the right to trial by jury, the right to protection from unlawful imprisonment and bound the King to the law and legal procedures. The UK constitution that you confused it with, is 'unwritten' (a better word for it would be 'uncodified' as some of it is written down, just not in a single document). The sources of the UK constitution include: -Statutory law (Acts of Parliament, ie: Human Rights Act). -Common law (Judge made law). -Conventions (traditions of how the system works; ie collective cabinet responsibility). -The Royal perogative (exercised by the government on behalf of the Monarch, ie: the power to declare war). -EU law (complicated post-brexit). -Authoritative works and constitutional documents (ie: Baghot's The English Constitution, Magna Carter etc).

London has always been big and important since Roman times while Birmingham only really developed in the industrial age. The history of power is in London not Birmingham.
@grapeman633 жыл бұрын
That is true but London did not emerge as the capital of England until the 12th century and even this is debatable. Is the capital the City of London or the City of Westminster? The seat of power is definitely in Westminster. The first Roman capital was Colchester and later York. The Anglo-Saxon kingdoms each had their own capitals. Mercia's was at Tamworth while Wessex's was at Winchester. Once Aethelstan united the country the capital shifted to Winchester. Under Cnut the Danelaw capital at Northampton became important. William I resided in London but did not proclaim it his capital. London did not emerge as the capital until the end of The Anarchy.

@@grapeman63 It's always hard to be certain about some things, but William I (AKA The Bastard & The Conqueror) had no set capital, neither did William Rufus (William II). Although both were crowned in London they were never there so many historians dispute the claim that London was a fixed capital even then, that the capital was wherever the King happened to be.

There are a few pre-Roman pictograms that may be 'language' carved on stones where the Picts lived, but whether it's writing or drawings is unfortunately debatable. There is also a set of characters made of lines called 'ogham' that was used in the Bronze Age into the Iron Age, which also seems to have included latin characters. It seems to function similarly to the Norse runic carvings; advice or warning to the educated elite, but sadly it varies so much and is so rare to find, that little has been translated of the British Isles script.

London's name; etymologists (a popular hobby in Britain) trace the meaning to something like 'Lud's Dun' which can mean 'someone called Lud, his fort'. It's on a map published some years ago of the meanings of placenames as just 'Hillfort', though. From the stone age, villages that needed to defend themselves needed water, food, defence and building materials. A sandy hill only accessible by boat, close to the river crossing-point nearest the sea in an area with many rivers and forests was ideal. Berlin's origin was similar, as was Paris's. Butchered mammoth bones have been found under London.

And every country who’s a part of the UN recognise human rights. Thor (Tor) is also from Nordic mythology that’s why he talked about Asgard. The Commonwealth of Nations is an association of independent countries . A connection to the British Empire is no longer required for membership ( Mozambique , for example , previously ruled by the Portuguese ) You need to apply for membership . England ( or the United Kingdom as we call it , England being but one of the countries of the UK , like Florida is but one state of the USA ) has absolutely no control over these countries . The Queen being head of the Commonwealth is no more significant to the UK controlling the Commonwealth than the Portuguese Secretary General of the United Nations meaning Portugal controls the UN The Queen , though head of state of 16 or 15 Commonwealth Realms , she can act only in that country as the Queen of that Country . Leading to interesting situations where , for example , Pakistan was at war with India in the name of the Queen and India was at war with Pakistan in the name of the Queen and Her Majesty's UK government was trying to find a peace between the two of them .

Basically the Queen has rights on all unmarked swans so if you kill an unmarked swan its poaching unless you have permission of the crown.

Stonehenge was altered a number of to keep it accurate to the drifting alignments of the Earth with the stars, and also to include stones from other stone circles from far away. The expense and importance of central control suggests a 'social control function' over a large area as the reason for Stonehenge. Secret knowledge of an accurate, perhaps predictive calendar may have been enough to amaze a society of farmers. Something caused the power to drift away from the centre, perhaps because the circle was no longer maintained or calibrated, so the political / religious power vanished.

The main reason London is bigger than Birmingham is London is a very old established port, Birmingham has no rivers and so until the canals came along, no way to easily get goods in and out, so was a small place until only a couple of hundred years ago. Owning a swan isn't quite like owning a human being, if you think about it, the swans are legally protected, the humans were not so fortunate. Shakespeare relative is nothing, one of my ancestors was hung, drawn & quartered for Regicide on the command of Oliver Cromwell.

God save the Queen is England's official anthem. The hymn Jerusalem is the unofficial anthem of England

This is more a question than a comment but did Shakespeare really come up with all those words? Or was he just the first to write them down? Seems a bit odd he would make up words as no one watching his plays would understand? And unrelated, what the eff is with the multiple plays about the different Henrys (and why the need write them in several parts?)

God Save the Queen (King when a male on throne), Is the defacto National Anthem of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelands. However, there is nothing in Law proclaiming it, it just is. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Irelands have their Anthems, but again there's nothing legally binding about them. Why doesn't England have a seperate Anthem; well some like the England Cricket team have used the Hymm "Jerusalam" as an Anthem. Maybe we need a National Anthem, and a Royal Anthem, in Her Majesty's pressence.

In lieu of a constitution we had the Magna Carta, on which all our basic rights are founded. It also forms the basis of US rights and laws, as these were based on English law anyhow

The reason why Birmingham isn’t the main attraction is because London is the CAPITAL

Also, technically Birmingham isn't the next largest after London if you count Greater Manchester
