Actually, in South Africa we're quite diverse, and have some different ways to call some things. 1. Pants - SA pants, trousers, jeans, Chinos, (for women) slacks 2. Cookies - (older gen) biscuits, (younger gen) cookies or biscuits 3. Change room - fitting room, dressing room. I never heard change room used in SA, although I've heard in US media like soapies and sitcoms 4. Tic-Tac-Toe - SA naughts and crosses 5. Gas Station - Petrol station or garage. In the past, most petrol stations also had car repair shops (garages) attached to the station. so you could get petrol, motor oil, water, and get your car repaired.

7:51 A garage is called a garage for both fuels stations and car garages in South Africa. We also call a traffic light 🚦 a robot. Don't know why? 🤷🏽‍♂️

Back in the 80's and earlier in Australia a "Servo" (self service station) only sold fuel (pertol/diesel/lpg gas), a garage also had a mechanic's workshop as well as selling fuel, so you would take your car to a garage to get your car serviced and to get fuel, but these garages have all disappears and we only have servo's so the young Aussie girl in the video probably doesn't remember garages or the full service stations (where people would pump the fuel for you)

Here in Australia, my grandma back in her younger days used too and still sometimes call the Service Station a Garage (not just her lol). I assume they called the Garage a Shed or Car Port.

In the UK for 'gas station' we'd say petrol station or garage. We also call the garage, garage & the mechanic/ auto shop the garage 🤣 Need gas: going to the garage Car not working: taking the car to the garage What's that on the side of your house: garage. We like to keep it simple 🤣 and everyone knows which one you're talking about.

Hey from South Africa. I don't agree with some of what he said but most of it was accurate . 1. Boot 2. Flat(s) 3. Chips but if it's from McDonald's it's Fries 4. Phone (a house phone is a Landline) 5. Bin 6. Pants (Chinos) 7. Biscuits 8. Fitting Room 9. Noughts and crosses or x's and o's 10. Garage (and where you store car at your house is still a garage) 11. Vest (tank top for women) 12. Peppers (Red pepper)

Singapore's Housing Development Board (HDB) Flats... Are what would commonly be called Public Housing... Over 80% of the population live in such flats... They range from small units with just 1 bedroom + livingroom + kitchen + 1 toilet... to 3/4 bedroom + livingroom + kitchen + 2 toilet.... These flats are only available for Citizens and Permanent Residents... They are highly subsidies by the Government... which make housing affordable in a densely populated country... I live in what is known as a 4 Room HDB... Basically 3 bedroom + 2 toilet + kitchen + storage room + living and dining room... One of the most common type of units...

As a foreigner when I lived in Singapore I rented an old HDB unit (They have to be over a certain age before they can be rented to foreigners) far out in the suburbs of Singapore. I was very happy with the high quality of the unit aa it was significantly better than what I had rented in other countries for the same monthly rent. So just because it's government housing doesn't mean it's bad, it's actually excellent housing, even the old ones.

Words have changed over the years. As all these words having an English origin not only does it depend on which country you are from but also what age you are. US - Tanktop UK - Vest US - Vest UK - Waistcoat US - cell phone Aus.- Mobile phone Aus. - a fixed phone at home is called a landline US - gas station UK - garage UK - where you park your at home is also a garage. You know what is meant by the context. US - EV front trunk is a frunk Aus. - EV front boot is a froot

I remember watching an old western movie - John Wayne, on a stagecoach - and he called the box he was standing on at the back of the coach, the boot. Believe it was called a "boot box" on old stages (and did look like a travel trunk). Americans tend to like things very visible and obvious - see Michael Mcintyre on American English! Pity there is not English English speaker. Cell phone, my crowd would call it a "mobile" or just "phone". A cookie is what was on screen but is not a "biscuit" which are harder, baked, sweet heaven. Trousers for me, since my "pants" are my underwear. Fitting Room for me, Changing room is for getting naked in - swimming pool. Noughts and Crosses, Petrol Station which we also call it a Garage (context is everything). Vest (common) or singlet (posh). Pepper - Capsicum is the plant that has fruit called peppers on it.

We also call it a mobile phone or mobile here in Australia. Round biscuits with chocolate chips we do tend to say choc chip cookie or cookie. Most other biscuits we say biscuit. In earlier years, a car repair shop normally set up shop at the premises of a filling station.for ease of operations and customers are easily available. Later, due to fire hazard regulations, repair shops are not allowed. The word garage comes into being when cars are parked longer term to wait for repair or spare parts or second hand car dealers move in.

This South African guy is making half of this up. He is Afrikaans so his use of English words is more limited. Responding to your question at 3:55, Singaporeans also call the house phone 'the telephone'. So if your friend wants to ask for your house phone number, he may ask : 'Can give me your telephone number?' As for the cell phone, Singaporeans tend to say 'handphone' more often, and less commonly, 'mobile phone'. So if I am socialising and I would like to get people's phone number, I would ask: 'Can give me your handphone number' or I will say: 'Come, let's exchange handphone numbers'. Please pardon me for the Singlish that I put in quotation marks as the response. It is just a common language that many Singaporeans are used to
