We do use quite a few onomatopoeia in South Africa to describe objects like the one she used for flip flops. Personally I would use sandals as the English equivalent word because other than "mathap'thapu" in my part of South Africa we use "sandasi" as the native word for flops which is a borrowed word from SANDALS.

As an Australian born in the 70's. I only use Vaseline for chapped lips still to this day. Sodas are called soft drinks as they don't contain alcohol or hard liquor! We call thongs, G-strings, which is pretty self-explanatory.

Aus here. In my area we call pants trousers and underwear pants for girls and jocks for boys, instead of Soda we say soft drinks, we actually do call those things popsicles because the wood is a popsicle wood. Icy poles are thin, long frozen flavoured ice but some people call them Zooper doopers because of a particular brand

But I think when it comes to Africa you can get different names of things depending on the side of the continent or country for example the South African lady said they call Jumpers Jersey which l was surprised because in Kenya we also say jumpers and Jerseys are the sports wears but mostly Kenya we share the same names of different things with UK

I enjoyed watching this with you. There are a lot of similarities (as is to be expected) as our (biggest) culture is from the same root - but it shows how other influences have changed words from the original English (which even the English don't speak anymore.) You should see one of their videos where they include Canada in their mix. (It is usually only with the US & UK so there would be a lot of overlap - unless you see a different one. It may fix in your mind the UK differences for you though & you would get to see how Canada falls in the middle of both - for the most part. We have some of our own unusual words though. (Some of our milk has a name that surprises some. 😁) Take care everyone. Love from Canada. 💞

What was a slipper bath? Slipper Baths: What were public baths in London? This meant that in many locations people gained access to facilities to wash themselves and their laundry. The Wash Houses building in Old Castle Street E1 housed the first public baths in London - The Whitechapel Public Baths. The Prince Consort (Prince Albert) laid the foundation stone and it was opened in 1847. A slipper bath features one raised sloping end, enabling the bather to relax and soak in a comfortable lounging position. Since one end of this freestanding bath is higher than the other, it looks like a traditional slipper. UK house slippers like horseback riding are just called slippers and horse riding, where else can you ride a horse.? Great video as ever, Peace.

Why are football jerseys called jerseys? Jersey is made from knitted cotton, wool, or synthetic material, and it's used for a lot of commercial clothing - everything from polo shirts to fancy dresses. The name comes from Jersey, a region of what's now the British Isles where jersey was first developed. The word was first used for athletic shirts in the 1840s. Google.

During the English Civil War, the Channel Island of Jersey, off the coast of Mainland France, remained loyal to the British Crown and gave sanctuary to the King. In the Royal Square in St Helier, Charles II of England was proclaimed King in 1649, following the execution of his father, Charles I. North American lands were divided by Charles II, who gave his brother, the Duke of York (later King James II), the region between New England and Maryland as a proprietary colony (as opposed to a royal colony). James then granted land between the Hudson River and the Delaware River (the land that would become New Jersey) to two friends who had remained loyal through the English Civil War: Sir George Carteret and Lord Berkeley of Stratton.[27] The area was named the Province of New Jersey. Wikipedia.
