Following the recent news of the 2023 Knighthood Honours List, we really wanted to learn anything we could about what it means to be a Knight in the modern World. We also wanted to know, what do you get when you become a Sir or Dame? There was some very interesting answers to these and more questions in this episode! Did you know that some Famous individuals have even turned down being a Knight?! We hope you enjoy this, it was very informative and a lot of fun! Please Like our video and consider subscribing to our channel. Thanks so much!

The picture that you like was actually sold at the Canterbury souvenir shop which in fact is a tapestry, unfortunately, it is not presently listed in their inventory Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket was assassinated in Canterbury Cathedral on 29 December 1170 by followers of Henry II, on your visit to the UK you must go the Cathedral. Adjacent to it is a wonderful museum called The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge, which wanders through the upper floors of the premises below. Admission is Free, However, a charge may apply for certain special exhibitions and events. I added a comment to a previous post, Magni Carta (1215) laid out the rights of freemen, this royal charter was presented to King John to sign into law, and it also included that no man was above the law including the sovereign, Magni Carta was rewritten a further three times in 1216, 1217 and 1225. Just a little something the whet your appetite. p.s.

There is a story told by a friend of the late Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, the WW2 fighter ace who lost both legs, one above the knee and one below, in a crash in 1931 and went on to work later on behalf of disabled charities, that prior to his appointment at the Palace to receive the accolade of knighthood a functionary telephoned to ask him whether he would be actually be able to kneel in front of Her Majesty. Bader asked him to wait a moment, tried it, then came back and said “Just tried it, old boy. No can do. Fell on my arse”.

Hi girls… from the King👑dom.. did you know the wife of a knight is styled Lady, even if they’re divorced, until she remarries..but she can only use the title in conjunction with her husband’s surname,.. so it would read, Edna, Lady Smith.. there is no title for the husband of a Dame .. and no title for the husband of a knight either … ❤️

Steven Spielberg is an American who has been knighted in the past. But only British citizens can use the title Sir or Dame, non citizens use the initals KBE (Knight of the British Empire) after their name. You also technically lost the knighthood after you die. As evident by people wanting Jimmy Savile havign his knighthood stripped after death, even though he no longer had it anyway.

Today there are 56 independent countries within the Commonwealth consisting of 2.5 billion people who were all governed by our dear Elizabeth .. our Queen. I am now 65 and have only know our Queen as supreme leader and her passing brings me sadness. Obviously no one lives for ever but I will especially miss her annual Christmas and New Years speeches. Watching this video a second time after having commented on it the first time round, I have just realised the connection between two separate parts of it, the first of people who have refused the offer of a knighthood and the second of people who have had it taken from them. Sir Anthony Blunt, the Surveyor of the Queen’s Pictures, was played by James Fox in the brilliant 1990s BBC television production “A Question of Attribution“ which was based around the security services investigation of Blunt whilst showing him instructing his Art students and discharging his Royal duties. In one extended scene set in Buckingham Palace he is surprised by the entrance into its art collection of HM the Queen, splendidly portrayed by Prunella Scales who does not attempt to caricature HM in any way but indicates by interpretation of the script and her delivery of it that she knows exactly what is going on in Blunt’s life. This TV drama was written by Alan Bennett, one of our ‘national treasures’ ever since he was one of the ‘Beyond the Fringe’ team sixty years ago and forged ahead to become an internationally successful playwright. He was offered a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire - its top grade) in the 1980s and a knighthood in the 1990s. He declined both. He said that having a knighthood would be like having to wear a suit every day of your life. Whilst he is well-known in US literary circles and has friends over there, he said that when he was Oscar-nominated for his film ‘The Madness of King George III’ and stood up on cue in the audience on Oscar Night to be illuminated as a nominee several people around him were ignorant enough of his fame to hiss ‘Siddown you jerk’!

A demonstration of the late Queen’s sense of humour is that in Jan 2022 she awarded Daniel Craig aka James Bond, a CMG (Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George) a rare award for chivalry because it was the same award 007 had in the Ian Fleming books He received it from Princess Anne in Oct 2022. FYI The buffet (later interpreted as a slap) in old style knighting ceremony was actually meant to symbolise something. It was all about honor. Let this be the last blow that goes ananswered. It might be worth investigating knightly virtues, both true medieval and then the Victorian romantic ideal, strands of both which influence modern knighting ceremony.

There is an Honours list twice a year - New Year and Birthday. On a different topic, prior to the coronation in May, you should do a reaction to a video on the King's new cypher, which is basically the monarch's logo. Obviously we have only been familiar with EIIR for 70 years. The video in question comments on the new design and where it will be utilised and also compares it to former monarchs' cyphers.

The Accolade is a painting by British artist Edmund Leighton (1852-1922). It is one of many paintings produced by Leighton in the 1900s on the subject of chivalry. It is often mistaken fir being Arthurian but is part of the Victorian Romantic period. It is currently held at the Baker Street Gallery. Knight Bachelor* is a knighthood without any duties or claims. * the word Bachelor is from the French bas-chevalier, or "Knight without" as in an unlanded, without horse or property, and unmarried Knight. This explains why unmarried men are called Batchelors.

This video did not make clear MBE, OBE and CBE (the lower levels) mean only use of the post-nominals and the medal. The Lionesses are mainly MBEs' (Members of the British Empire). A Knighthood dies with you. The government largely do the nominations. Anyone can nominate a person to be honoured and a committee decides. Honours list are for the Monarch's birthday and the New Year but the government to do submit names frequently for interim awards (mainly their own parliamentarians). When a Prime Minister resigns or retires they will release an honours list. These reward the party faithful etc. David Cameron included his barber on the list. He did not cover peerages (Barons/Lords and Baronesses/Ladies for example Baroness Margret Thatcher). These can occur at any time. These are almost always life peerages and not hereditary any more. They sit in the upper chamber of parliament-the Lords. The persons sons/daughters are referred as 'Honourable'.

I believe the painting is called The Accolade by Edmund Leighton. Apparently John Lennon handed back his MBE in 1969. David Bowie just didn't see the point in having it, and said it was not what he worked for. Although some musicians of the old school do have them and have accepted them I think generally since John Lennon handed his back it has been deemed as "uncool" to accept it as a rock n roll musician except for the likes of Brian May and Paul McCartney and a lot of them come from a time when they were hippies and anti-monarchy due to BRitains involvement in wars and colonisation because they were all about Peace and Love like John Lennon.

Personally speaking, there were a lot of men and women from WW1 who likely deserved to be recognised a lot more after that war - as well as those from the Second WW as well . . . but sadly few have been, and now those same people are being lost with such recognition . . . I'd have placed them well before any politician, civil servant, athlete, celebrity or reality star, millionaire, etc . . . As there were so many unsung heroes of both those eras whose involvement in one way or another has simply been forgotten and lost in time now . . . As regards to one man who I think should have been asked about accepting a Knighthood, but don't know if he has been asked or not, or has also refused like some? (Maybe the same even with a CBE or OBE?) - I'd say Jeff Lynne (of ELO fame) for his long and much varied dedication and contribution to decades of music . . . only seeing as so many other music people managed to get one, yet not him. But that's just me and my thoughts on it . . .

Wikipedia has a good article about those who have refused the honour. You'll be surprised how big some of the names are and their reasons for refusal.

Natasha if you like that painting then when you finally get over here you must go to the Tate Gallery (NOT the Tate Modern). They have a fabulous collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings which is the style of the one you like.

Natasha and Debbie.....many congrats on all of your terrific clips etc showing the many things about our Great Britain. Being a history buff and regulary getting requests for info, photo's and video clips from our tv/press companies etc, when they are getting a programme together etc, and need more info covering several periods of our history, do i oblige. In one of your video's did you react to the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, which was very sad and moving. I have a short video not of that, but of the same vein, which i know will affect you as or more deeply. Beautiful video, and if you would like a copy, how do i send a copy to you ?? Keep up the good work. Steve

If you receive an honour that is a recipient of a higher award, you have to give up the first one back in order to receive the higher award. Martin Lewis received an OBE in 2014 for services to charity and consumer champion. Last year, he received a CBE in the new year honours list for services to broadcasting. Anyone can receive an award over the year I've seen crossing guards (lollipop men/women) receive honours for service to their community. The highest military honour for bravery is the Victoria Cross, and the highest civilian bravery award is George Cross. The island of Malta received the George Cross for bravery against the German occupation during WWII. Lords and baronets are nominated by political parties as well as outgoing Prime Ministers.

The honours system recognises people who have: made achievements in public life committed themselves to serving and helping Britain They’ll usually have made life better for other people or be outstanding at what they do. They must still be actively involved in what you’re nominating them for. The only honours which can be awarded after someone’s death are gallantry awards. Whether someone gets an honour - and the honour they get - is decided by an honours committee. The committee’s recommendations go to the Prime Minister and then to the King, who awards the honour.

You guys have my favorite author in this one!! Sir Terry is probably the most prolific author from the U.K. outside of Lee Child or Neil Gaiman. The sword with which he was knighted he not only commissioned, but learned to make himself, specifically for the occasion, from a meteorite he owned... Now you're going to have to learn about one of his best characters (Sam Vimes) to find out why that's so ironic.

Pretty sure that Sam would have made a memorable comment about it. And then got his old boots on and made his rounds through the Shades.

John Lennon took an MBE but later returned it too - you can also renounce the honour if you want later rather than declining it outright.

Yes, it works both ways. An honour such as a Knighthood can be revoked, but the recipient can also return their honour if they feel the Crown or Government that nominated them have brought discredit and made the honour dishonourable

Although Vaughan Willisms refused knighthoods, he accepted the Order of Merit (OM). This is the personal gift of the sovereign and membership is limited to 24 living individuals from the Commonwealth realms (and a limited number of honorary awards to people from elsewhere). He decided that was the one to have and that a knighthood was worthless in comparison.

Wow, some really interesting refusers. Some seem fairly in character but some are much less so - or in fact it shows that their character is not well presented. I note in particular the physics contingent of Michael Faraday, Stephen Hawking and Paul Dirac all of whom I would have expected to accept the honour with the grace with which it was given.
@pabmusic1
@pabmusic1 Жыл бұрын
@@MrBulky992 Yes indeed, though he refused the knighthoods before he accepted an OM - often long before - so your last sentence is probably a post-hoc rationalisation. I think it had more to do with its being the personal gift of the sovereign. Rudyard Kipling was an OM too.

Hi Ladies, I only knew about the slap because it featured in the 2005 film (The Kingdom Of Heaven). The first time it occurs is when Liam Neeson`s character knights Orlando Bloom`s character in the film. Then later, Orlando Bloom`s character does the same again to other character`s.

The British writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah turned down an honour (not sure which one) because he descends from a country which was colonised and became part of the British Empire. He resents the whole concept of colonisation and the use of "British Empire" in all the titles. I think the names of the titles could and should be updated to "... of the British Commonwealth", which, while it still has historical baggage, is not quite so loaded. By the way, regarding the exact action of the sword, it is crucial that the flat of the sword, NOT the sharp edge, is touched to the recipient's shoulders.
