American Couple Reacts: England's Battersea Dogs & Cats Home! Animal Rescue is SO Crucial! For Jazz...
One year ago today on December 11th, 2021, we had to do the impossible, say goodbye to our furry, perfect daughter, Jazz of 14 years. It has been absolutely devastating for us and especially having to do the same with our furry, perfect son, Tyson just 5 months ago at 15 years. We are Animal advocates and rescuers first and foremost. We had to do something to honor Jazz on this day and taking a look and learning about one of the oldest animal shelters, Battersea, seemed absolutely fitting. Our goal with this episode is to open eyes to those who don't understand how dire it is to spay/neuter your pets. To adopt from a shelter/rescue instead of purchasing animals from breeders. It's an international problem and it's up to each of US to fix it. Jazz and Tyson left a massive legacy and we hope that it will touch you as well as it has so many. Battersea is a wonderful organization and we fully support everything they do as we learned in the video. It's the Christmas season and a time of giving, so if you are able please donate anything to Battersea or any other Shelter/Rescue near you. Thank you for watching and we hope this episode will make some impact.

Paul o'Grady for the love of dogs is a brilliant show, it's funny, it's sad at times but the love that comes through from him, the staff and the dogs is immense... its heartwarming and they follow up with the dogs too. If you can it would be brilliant if you could do a reaction to it either here or on patreon and paul is such a character x

Everyone is vetted to make sure they can afford to keep a dog or cat and to make sure they have the space in their home. A few times on Paul O'Grady's program, someone took a dog home and sadly something happened so they couldn't afford to keep the dog or cat anymore. Or someone joined the family home and allergies were the issue.

On the 8th of November 2013 we adopted Jack a Border Collie. He was in a pitiful state. He had been dumped in a pound in the Irish Republic, a death sentence if the dog isn't rescued in seven days. He didn't understand why he'd been rejected after about eight years as a farm dog. His many injuries meant he could no longer work. Animal Heaven and Irish charity took all the dogs in the Kavan, Co Kerry shelter back to their farm. A family in the south of England offered him a home, so he was fostered to a wonderful lady called Sue Howe at High Wickham until he was ready to join his new family. After two weeks these people who he adored brought him back to Sue. She had three rescue dogs of her own and cats which Jack hated so she knew she couldn't keep him. My wife Tina saw his plight on Facebook and rang and said we'd have him (I knew nothing of this) on Tuesday the 4th of November. On the Saturday morning Tina announced that she'd like to go out for lunch. This seemed like a nice idea so I asked here where she'd like to go. Her reply seemed a bit odd and I asked why there? It is next to a retail park with a big pet supply shop. We had looked after friend's dogs on numerous occasions so I asked it we were having a little canine visitor? I was told: "No, we're having a little canine resident." This left me considerably out of pocket. In the early evening Sue arrived and I met Jack for the first time. He was clearly depressed, he took several weeks to really settle after the trauma of the past few months. What we began to see was a friendly, highly sociable dog who possessed great intelligence and charm. The only person who he didn't like was Tina's Mum who he would avoid like the plague. He was good with little children, he was very tolerant of those with serious learning difficulties and could sense illness or infirmity. Tina used to take him to a home for seniors as a therapy dog. After a few serious health scares including meningitis on the 5th of November 2020 we lost him to bone marrow cancer. We were devastated. I still feel a great pain having lost my best friend. Unfortunately due to caring commitments we have not been in a position to adopt another collie dog. When the opportunity presents itself we will rescue again.

We have just been adopted by a ginger tom cat. He had been brought by people during the pandemic and they moved and left him behind. He was living in a derelict garage and scavenging for scraps and sadly starving to death. We began feeding him and once he was comfortable enough near us trapping him and getting him to the vet. He wasn't chipped and was massively under weight. He has since been defleaed and de wormed, sadly needs some more tests about over issues and is currently stretched out and snoring (honestly never heard a cat snore as loudly as him) on his favourite place - the top of the sofa. My only regret is that he is called Ginger because we described him as that ginger cat who comes into the garden and if I'd known he was going to adopt us I'd have given him a more original name. I don't understand why he was abandoned since he is a sweet loving cat and more importantly we have a great shelter not far from us (I used to volunteer dog walk for them till my health and mobility took a turn and couldn't anymore). Great video ladies - keep up the good work with your non profit. Chris from Bristol in UK

Travel the world and all animals speak the same language. It frightens others if you drop onto your bum for a proper one-to-one, wild pigs, sea lions, sharks, penguins etc they all respond to a good eye to eye, a neck rub an offered treat. All any want is a little Love. When I go for a walk in the country most of those who are gone turn up for another walk. I even have had cats who have enjoyed walks, even with dogs. I looked after a dog for a weekend. 3 months later the dog had travelled 50 miles and turned up on my doorstep. Animals reward your Love always.

I remember my brother and I getting the day off school unexpectedly and going out with our Mum and Dad for a ‘surprise’. We drove to Battersea and met Zoe who was a slightly chunky Doberman who had been surrendered because she wasn’t vicious enough to be a guard dog. She ended up being our best friend growing up and would have to split her night between my brothers bedroom (bed) and my bedroom (bed) as she could never decide who to sleep with despite our parents telling us before adopting her that any dog we got would not be allowed in the bedrooms. lol We had her for 10 wonderful years and despite divorces, moving away and starting our own lives we were all there gathered around her bed, crying and laughing as we remembered silly stories together when she was finally put to sleep. I know for a fact that my childhood would not have been half as happy or fun without Zoe in it. ❤

My wife and I adopted our first dog Hazel from Battersea. She was 13 years old and had lived on the streets for most of her life. Her last few years were very special as we moved from London to the Jurrasic Coast. She had long walks in the countryside and enjoyed warmth and love in a house for the 1st time in her life. Since then we have adopted or rehomed Great Danes and Staffordshire Bull Terriers from other charities or difficult situations. I am now a dog trainer and behaviourist learning to socialise aggressive or unpredictable furballs. Due to my health problems our present pooch will probably be our last. Battersea is a wonderful charity and we support them financially and have left them a bequest in our wills so we will support them after we are gone.

They rescue not just dogs and cats, but any domestic animal like rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice and of course horses which is where it started. I would suggest you watch the film War Horse which is all about why it was started and how. A warning though you will needed a box or two of tissues each.

I have had 2 Battersea rescue animals over the years, 1 dog and a cat. The levels that the staff go through to match the animal to the right people is extensive. My Rottweiler I had she was very scared and timid, she had never been in a home environment. She was kept in breeding kennels outside all her life. They had many sessions with her in a living room made up in the shelter. To get her used to things like telephones, vacuum cleaners. Kettles, microwaves. Washing machines. Even down to cupboard doors and drawers ( which she was terrified of at first, she had no idea what they were) then after months of these sessions, they found she was very lively outside, so they have a designated indoor training/ agility area, where they found she had a love for agility ( apart from the tunnel, she didn’t like enclosed spaces at first) she became more and more confident the more different things she conquered. Until one day I came into the facility, I saw her coming back from a agility session, I was seated at the front foyer waiting to speak to someone at the desk to start my search for the perfect dog, when she came bouncing in, I didn’t see her until she was right in front of me, she sniffed my knee then immediately sat square in front of me looked directly in my face with her beautiful soft eyes. She put her paw on my lap. And that was it I was hooked. After several visits to Battersea making sure she was fully comfortable around me, and I was totally aware of all her little ways. What frightened her, what made her build confidence. How to take a leadership role in her life, I was finally able to bring her home. She was 6 when I rescued her. I had her for 5 years, until she was struck down with cancer. I was able to be with her for 5 wonderful months after the diagnosis. I will say yes it was heartbreaking losing my girl, but I would never change it. Battersea is a wonderful charity, staff are thorough with everything, I have nothing but respect for the work they do. If Battersea didn’t exist I would never have had my beautiful girl Tazmin. 💔🙏❤️ ( that’s her on the right, in my profile pic. On the left was my guy Gus, I had him from a different shelter. )

And yes he does often take little paws home with him. Queen Consort Camilla loves going there and she too has adopted a dog or 2 from there as well. Over 35 years I have owned 7 dogs, none were bought, they came into the family's life, either because someone couldn't keep them anymore, or they just needed a home and were loved as family members to the end. Our1st dog was a Red Setter/Cross called Brandy: 2nd dog a Spaniel/Lab called Gizzy: 3rd dog a Collie called Lass: 4th dog a Beagle/Whippet Cross called Sash: , 5th dog a Staffy/Lab Cross (he actually followed us home and stayed for 15 years): 6th & 7th dogs, brother and sister called Beenie & Frooty. NONE paid for, all loved and lived good lives, I miss 'em all, but I know they are waiting beyond 'The Rainbow Bridge' for me, when it's my time. Love and cwtches to you both, from Wales.

Hi Ladies, Same day, same year I lost my Cavalier, Fudge. On Sunday the 4th December 22, went and picked up my two new pups, German Shorthaired Pointers, I already have two Poppie and Fizz. One of them named Holly but couldn't decide on the second name, after having her in the house for a couple of days she became JAZZ! Pushy little buggar she is!!

Thank you so much for championing owning a rescue animal. So many people paying thousands for pedigree dogs, with no thought of suitability to their lifestyles, and then giving them up on a whim when it suits them. They are a part of the family not a commodity. My family had a dog from Battersea over 5yrs ago. She’s called Lulu and she’s beautiful and very loved. Love you girls.

I help rescue dogs from here in the uk also romania and serbia. I have 9 dogs at the moment. 7 are mine 2 are fosters which are so traumatised its heartbreaking. 2 of mine are disabled. 1 is a tripod girl with 3 legs and 1 is in a wheel chair as someone run over him then run over him again so he wears a nappy. I love all dogs and they all deserve a loving warm home.

Here in the UK I sponsor a dog through the dogs trust, which is a no kill organisation. My boy is a Springer Spaniel called Alfie and he lives in Swansea. It is only 8 pounds a month (2 coffees) to contribute to his welfare. Battersea is the oldest institution and does great work. You should check out "Paul O'Grady For the Love of Dogs", he is not only an ambassador but a volounteer.

Just watched your blog about Battersea dogs and cats home. I was in tears as I had 2 dogs from Battersea and it brought back good memories of the times we had together. The first one was Lucky who was a Border Collie mix. She was 18 months old when we got her. We had to have her euthanised because of cancer when she was 15 years old. The 2nd dog was Florence or Flo for short. She was 3 years old when we got her. We had to have her euthanised when she was also 15 years old because of cancer. Flo was a German Shepherd Doberman mix. Unfortunately I can’t have a dog at the moment due to health issues. I still miss them both. I would strongly recommend that you give something to your local shelter or rescue group as they do such a good job and they need all the help they can get, wether it’s money or time

@@TheNatashaDebbieShow Wouldn't go that far but thank you. My good lady was diagnosed with a terminal lung disease three and a half years ago with a three to five year life expectancy and a dog will give her a reason to get out of the house and excercise, company during the day while I'm at work and unconditional love and affection during her down days. Two out of those three will also work for me as well. We may be rescuing a dog and givingi t a safe and loving home but he/she will also be helping us as well. It's a win win for both us and the dog. Fingers crossed we get adopted by a pooch real soon.

@@punksterdude8290 Staffies outnumber every other breed in rescue centres by 3 to 1 in the UK. Please go and rescue one. They are all great, happy dogs who ended up being abandoned for many reasons, usually to do with idiots getting a cute pup but being too immature to look after it, getting rid because they get pregnant, or move house, or lose a job, or kids are allergic, or the landlord said it has to go ect ect. If I sound sour it's because I ran a rescue for years and heard all the reasons why they no longer wanted their dog.

Hey Ladies, Battersea is a great charity. Like many animal charities they rightly preach about getting a rescue as too many people will look to breeders first. So sad there are so many animals waiting for a home. I was part of a charity organisation on the Spanish island of Lanzarote that spayed and neutered cats as due to people letting them go when they no longer wanted to care for them, the feral population on the island was out of control.

Battersea is an amazing place, and as it's quite high profile it gets a lot of attention, it is also in the heart of London which has a population of around 9 million so it's doing ok. The real help is needed in the smaller shelters in the rest of the country that don't get the publicity. Another great place is Dogs 4 Rescue, a kennel free environment for dogs that wouldn't do well in a traditional kennel, the staff work with them until they are ready for a new home, they have a lot of videos on KZbin and Facebook too. I've always rescued, have 2 cats at the moment, but hope to get another dog in the future.

I’m crying. I love watching anything about Battersea. I’ve had all my dogs and cats from rescues. My last dog Molly a Springer Spaniel I had from Dogs Trust which is another big rescue in the U.K. they are also run as a charity. Their motto is “A dog is for life not just for Christmas” they also will never put a dog down (unless it’s so sick that is the only option) I had Molly when she was 11 months old and had her until she passed at age 14. They also did the same process as Battersea and even came to my home before the adoption to make sure it was suitable for her. Then 6 weeks after I had her I had to take her back there for her to be neutered as she hadn’t been done by her previous owner. They do this for free but we did give them a donation as we felt that they need funds and surgery costs them. I don’t know is Battersea does the same but Dogs Trust will not allow adoptions in the run up to Christmas (just in case people are doing it on a whim) and they close their centres to the public until the new year. I’m rescue all the way. I now have 3 rescue cats. RESCUE RESCUE RESCUE. 🐶 🐩 🐕 🐱 🐈 🐈‍⬛ Thank you for this lovely video and thank you for your love and work with animals. ❤❤❤❤ #dogstrust

I have a rescue story. We constantly asked for a dog growing up we where always told we couldn't afford a dog so we asked for a cat. Our parents decided to get an older cat The CPL (Cat protection league) said they had a cat that was 2 years old. The vet told us shes closer to 8. My mum went to look at her the cpl lady did a home visit we had to show her the house was safe. We got Penny our cat wen i was 15 the cpl woman promised to phone us a few weeks later to see how Penny was settling in. It took 3 weeks for her to finally come out of hiding and greet us but turned out to he a lovley cat. She passed away a few years ago now she had had a stroke so it was nicer to put her to sleep. Miss penny every time i visit home.

I’m greetin’ 😢!! I adore animals and my heart breaks at any kind of abuse and injustice towards them. My friend in Canada volunteers for a non profit rescue and fosters dogs. She drives to collect dogs from kill shelters in the US and takes them to Canada to be rehomed and rehabilitated. She does amazing work. One of her most recent rescues involved dogs being rescued from Afghanistan and she helped to unload the dogs from the first aeroplane in Vancouver. She also has fostered one of the dogs, whom I have met (along the all her other dogs and cats!) and I also visited the fantastic kennels that most of the dogs were taken to, so beautiful xxx This video was an amazing tribute to all those who help animals and to the memory of your wee Jazz ♥️♥️♥️♥️
