If you have been watching our Show you know that next year we are planning a trip to the United Kingdom. Our lovely friends that live in Kent, have offered their home to us to stay for some time. So we thought it would probably be a good idea to look at Kent and see some of the things there are to do there! There are very few videos of Kent but we were told this one gave the best overview. The amount of history that Kent has alone, was more than we expected! After watching this, we are so excited to travel to Kent! So much to do & we know this video only scratched the surface! We'll definitely be looking into Kent more in the next weeks & months ahead. Thank you SO much for watching! If you enjoy our content, please consider subscribing to our channel, it is the BEST way to support our channel and it's FREE! Also, please click the Like button. Thank you for your support!

I would feel obliged to check out Kent to if that's where my hosts live but I'm sure they would forgive taking trips elsewhere, there far too much to see in the UK, in all four countries so maybe I'm being bias by saying it would be an absolute sin not to see the Scottish Highlands, even driving through Glen coe .

@@TheNatashaDebbieShow KENT=EXCELLENT CHOICE....I have lived on the edge of South East London and Kent for 40 wonderful years after 29 years in Inner South East London, just 2 miles from Central London. In 1983, ,I moved just 11 miles and it has been a fabulous decision, near to the real Countryside and other, nearby, Counties but, also, it is easy to get back to London. For me, on the very edge, it is 30 minutes by train to the heart of London. For Males. Are you a "Man Of Kent" or a "Kentish Man" and what is the difference:) As for London,it is impossible to tour our 32 Counties with its 100,000 + Official "Places Of Interest". lol

Everything in Kent is biased to the eastern side of the county, luckily for those of us in the west it mean less visitors so quieter summer days and nowhere near as crowded as the more popular places.

Don’t forget to visit Hever Castle, King Henry’s bolt hole with Anne Bowlen, Chartwell Manor, Winston Churchills house during WW2, get your friend to organise a day trip to France on Le Shuttle, 35 mins with a car in a train and you’re in France ! Bodiam Castle reached by driving to Tenterten in Kent and getting a steam train there and back.

Kent,often called 'The Garden of England', used to be famous for growing Hops for Beer making. Families from the East End of London would travel done for a holiday picking them. The old Oast Houses where the Hops were dried are still a common sight across the county and even into East Sussex.
@RollerbazAndCoasterDad

Yep, and just to add to and clarify hops are traditionally grown not on hop farms but hop Gardens, because hops are flowers and flowers grow in gardens
@nickgrazier3373
@nickgrazier3373 Жыл бұрын
Kent during WWII (and hundreds of years before) was where hops particularly, were grown as well as fruit trees strawberries etc. it is also famous for oast houses which were used to dry the hops as part of the beer making process but now most have been converted to housing. The hop growing fields were called gardens and were popular at that time for families to join in the harvesting work. This family working is actually featured on the You Tube “13 Hours that saved Britain” about the WWII Battle of Britain! From Google: An Oast or hop kiln is an agricultural building designed for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process for making beer. An oast house' striking shape and pointed skyline is so unique and interesting, mainly found in the current and former hop-growing areas of Kent and East Sussex. This is probably why this area is called the Garden of England because the the hop fields are called Gardens.

Victoria (Vita) Mary Sackville-West (1892-1962) was a prolific fiction writer, prize-winning poet, and gardener. Her husband, Harold Nicolson, was a diplomat and important diarist. Their younger son Nigel Nicolson also became a writer, as did his son Adam. The Sackville-Wests and Nicolsons were involved in the activities of the National Trust from its earliest days. Vita and Harold purchased Sissinghurst Castle in 1930, a then run-down Elizabethan mansion in Kent, and began immediately to renovate both house and garden. Vita became increasingly reclusive as the Second World War began, and spent her last decades ensconced at Sissinghurst, writing novels and gardening books in its famous tower and creating the splendour of its gardens. The Gardens are open to the public.

Amazes me how Kent videos always gravitate to Dover when there are so many other picturesque places to see. Folkestone has a nice bohemian vibe (cafes, shops, pubs, restaurants) and the park area along beneath the Leas is a lovely to visit on s day out as well as the redeveloped harbour arm area. Inland the oast houses and villages as you head around the Weald area on the Sussex border.

I grew up in Dover, and people would just drive through to the ferries, without stopping to see the wonderful range of historical buildings and fortifications there. They just see the problems it has had. I used to play in the Castle grounds the Roman lighthouse, the Saxon church (my parents sdi ruined by the Victorians - but it was George Gilbert Scott of telephone box fame so interesting in itself). For pocket money prices you could go inside, and run around looking for the carvings by prisoners of ancient wars. I played tennis in the then lovely Connaught Park with an arch made from a whales jawbone and I played on the beach, the cliffs, and the coves along to St Margarets Bay. It deserves the attention it is now getting. I love other parts of Kent too. My grandfather's farm is now a vineyard in West Kent.

I'm from Kent. Get out into the charming, old villages. Kent was one of the original kingdoms before the formation of England. Extremely historic. There are many buildings dating back to the Dark Ages, before the Norman invasion of 1066 (and the invasion was won at Battle, just over the border in the next county). Go to Minster, Thanet and visit the convent there. Still run by nuns and built around 670 AD. Broadstairs is the best coastal town, in my opinion. Lovely bay with a beach in the centre of the town all overlooked by Bleak House (yes, as per Charles Dickens' book). Leeds Castle is stunning but I would strongly recommend Scotney Castle as well as Ightam Mote. You should also consider Hever Castle which was where Anne Boleyn (second wife of Henry VIII and mother to Elizabeth I) was brought up. Enjoy Kent. It truly is a beautiful county.

Kent is a lovely county but don't forget it isn't isolated, but borders East Sussex where you can visit Battle Abbey, which is fabulous and so important in our history. Bodiam castle is also surrounded by a moat and is very picturesque. Emmets Garden is also worth a visit while you're there. If you go near Rye check out Christopher Lloyd's beautiful, famous garden, Great Dixter with its 15th Century property.

For those don't know, Battle Abbey is built on the site of the Battle of Hastings (although Hastings is 6 miles away) took place in 1066. William the Bastard, more commonly known as William the Conqueror, and his Norman army defeated King Harold and took the English throne, thus becoming William the First.

The big things he missed were Dungeness, and the gardens: Sissinghurst is world famous. (As is nearby Great Dixter but it is just over the county boundary!) And don't omit a visit to a Kent vineyard - they make some really good white sparkling wine these days. We visited Kent for a week about 10 years ago and were amazed by how much there was to see and do. Also how tiny were the roads! It's next door to London but feels like the outer boondocks sometimes! BTW. If you are going to a lot of castles etc you might like to invest in National Trust membership - it pays back really quickly, about 4 or 5 site visits. (You might find the US National Trust is cheaper and will be accepted in the UK. Also, the National Trust for Scotland is cheaper than the English version.)

There's a lot of focus here on castles, cathedrals and coasts, but probably the chief glory of Kent is the rolling countryside with the wildflowers, blossom from the orchards and incredibly picturesque villages. Kent County Council advertises a scenic drive, signposted in the county, that takes you round some of the most beautiful countryside. As for villages, there are many peaceful places where time seems to have stood still, with beautiful, centuries-old houses, village greens, lovely old pubs and churches, including Appledore, Biddendon, Elham, Fordwich, Chilham, Goudhurst, Ightham, Matfield, Penshurst - do a search online and you will see many recommendations. Stop off for a pub lunch or a wander round on your way from one of the big attractions to another, and you won't want to leave!

Hello lovely ladies, and welcome to my hone County of Kent. I was pleased they showed Leeds Castle, as it is one of the loveliest castles in the world, and has lots of activities for all. Every summer, the castle holds a fantastic mid-summer open air concert, which attracts the very best acts and orchestras from around the world, and similarly attracts thousands of spectators, who all congregate from the flat area of the stage area, and moving up the grassy hill overlooking the stage and grounds. People in their droves bring their food and drink with them, often being towed by hand pulled trolleys, and enjoying a feast whilst enjoying the feast. Although I live literally around the corner from Leeds Castle, we go each year as it is the perfect idyll, and would thoroughly recommend to you Lovely ladies. I have attached a link to one of my favourite parts of the concert, a Spitfire flying to the music of 633 Squadron....my goosebumps had goosebumps....magical! BTW Lively Ladies, the mid-summer concert for 2024 is on the 13th July and tickets are on sale now if you're here at that time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHK6lHetiN-IpqM

"Kent, sir? Everybody knows Kent, sir. Apples, hops, cherries and women!" (C. Dickens, Pickwick Papers) I grew up in Canterbury and lived in the area until 8 years ago. Lots of historic sites to explore around Kent and neighbouring Sussex. Leeds Castle is in a village called Leeds, on the edge of Maidstone, hence the name. Pegwell Bay, between Sandwich and Ramsgate, is where the first Anglo-Saxons landed. Samphire Hoe was built up from the rock that was bored out in the making of the Channel Tunnel. I could drone on for ages. In East Sussex, you might enjoy exploring Rye, which is another old medieval town. Hartfield, near East Grinstead, was home to A. A. Milne and it's where he wrote the Winnie the Pooh books. Enjoy your visit, ladies. You'll have something to do every day, should you wish.

I grew up just the other side of the Kent/Sussex border. If you get a chance you should check out the small towns of Rye and Winchelsea. Also learn about the ancient Cinque ports (4 of which are actually in Kent), also you could pay your respects to Matoaka (better known as Pocahontas) who is buried in Gravesend (not sure what else there is in Gravesend). One thing they missed, if you are into trains, is the Romney , Hythe and Dymchurch railway which is a 1/3 scale model railway built about 100 years ago that you can ride in with steam trains. There is video of the re-opening of the line after the second world war with Laurel and Hardy doing the official opening.

My County - is on The N&D Tourist Visit- yaaay!! Oohhhh what can I say on here about lovely Kent, that’s not been said before? It’s just as special, interesting and historic as suggested. My local church was built in 600AD placed close to where the Romans built a very large villa and a long “Roman Road” to the coast! A castle just down the A2 and a Dockyard - the home where Anne Boleyn lived and Henry VIII “courted” her (dirty beast! 😁) … Ohhh there is so much to see and do - Natasha & Debbie you will have a whale of a time here - and if you come in June/July - that’s prime strawberry season and there is nothing better than strawberries grown in Kent, another thing it is famous for!

You should know that the River Medway splits the county into two, a pretty river with some stunning scenery on its banks. On the left (to the west) are the KENTISH MEN (closer to London), on the other side are the MEN OF KENT. The three big towns on the Medway are ROCHESTER, GILLINGHAM and CHATHAM. Rochester was touched on briefly in the video. MARGATE is a great seaside town to visit, as is WHITSTABLE with a different flavour (and literally for its oysters). You must also drive around and see the oasthouses in their country settings, very emblematic of the county of Kent.

The Medway area is a massive explore , nuff said, but a really memorable thing to do is visit the docks and log the sail boats and the Dutch barges and also there are some vintage Thames tugboats . If you have the cheek the owners may invite you aboard for a look around?

Lots of great pubs, attractive villages and drives throughout the county. Do try to visit Hever Castle - near Edenbridge. It was the home of Anne Boleyn and has magnificent, extensive gardens. If you're there in the summer, they also have a season of plays and other drama and music in the gardens. Really worth a visit. Enjoy!

Hi Ladies, as others have mentioned Natasha would like The Naval Dockyard in Chatham, your love of castles must include Hever Castle, and then Chartwell, home of Sir Winston Churchill and as I have mentioned before the restored and refurbished rail wagon that transported the Unknown Warrior to London situated at Bodiam station although it is called the Cavell Van after Edith Cavell. Someone else also suggested getting the heritage steam train from Tenterden to Bodiam to further enhance your trip which is a great idea.

I was born in Kent, it’s where my dad’s family live. I live in Cornwall where my mum’s family are from. I like Kent but Cornwall is by far the nicer place. Kent is busy because it’s close to London. I recommend you travel further afield. While you are in Kent you can get the train to France for the day. Go through the Channel Tunnel.

Lovely sharing Kent with you both! Kent has so many memories for me, my Grandparents lived near Reculver Towers. I would see those towers as a child and they seemed so mysterious, having seen them up close recently, they are amazing! Broadstairs definitely worth a visit, not changed much since I was a child in the 80’s 💕 Absolutely adore Canterbury. My favourite place in Kent is Herne Windmill, near Herne Bay. Many locals, including my Grandparents in the 1980’s and 1990’s, have helped with its upkeep over the years. No holiday would be same without seeing it 💕 Hopefully see Chatham Dockyards, my Grandparents meet there so I need to go. Thanks for sharing xx

The best fish and chips in the UK are to be found at Whitby in Yorkshire. Whitby is also a great place to visit, with its picturesque Abbey ruins at the top of the cliff looking out over the sea. Bram Stoker also set Dracula here, and the town hosts regular gothic meets with tourists following the Dracula trail. There are great walks along the steep, cobbled streets, and also down the cliffside walkway from the Abbey. There are restaurants, including the famous Magpie, serving locally caught fish with chips, and generous amounts of mushy peas. There are good fish and chips in many places in the UK, including Kent of course. A top ten list of the best fish and chip establishments is produced every year, so this is a good guide. One of my favourites is Knights Restaurant in Glastonbury, Somerset, which has been in business for more than 100 years. Another great place to visit. Actually, I don't really like mushy peas.

I live in North Kent, close to London. There really isn't much to do in Kent unless you like castles. Chatham dock yard is steeped in naval history and quite interesting with some important ships and a submarine to explore. Chislehurst caves is always good fun. The caves were home to families during the Battle of Britain, when the Nazi's were dropping bombs everywhere. The Sweeps festival in Rochester is always good fun. Look these ideas up, if you have time.

Kent - Brands Hatch (Motor Racing) , Biggin Hill ( WW2 Airfield) , Westerham ( and Chartwell - Gardens and Winston Churchill's House and Story of General Wolfe (Quebec/French English Wars). Tenderden - Largest Town without a national rail service i think, (but Kent and East Sussex (Steam) Railway and Bodiam Castle. Sheerness and the Isle of Sheppey (for That Beach) . Broadstairs - Charles Dickens House, Margate - trendy arty. Other castles - Walmer probably nicest small one. Martello Towers in various places. Rye town and Harbour, Hythe - for Minature Railway, Whitbread Hop Farm. and Finish up at Hastings (TV museum and other fun places + castle / caves )

Loving your channel, ladies! I love Kent! My family and I lived in Canterbury for 2 years while I taught at Kings School on a Fulbright Exchange, so Canterbury Cathedral was our “school chapel!” Still have very good friends in the area. I still hop over the pond every 2-3 years (including this October) to visit and explore. Others have already made excellent suggestions for other places to visit. (I heartily 2nd Hever and Chartwell!) The castle you saw at the start of the video is Deal Castle, one of the coastal forts built on orders of Henry VIII when there was concern about the possibility of invasion from Spain and France. Another one of the best things about Kent are it’s country pubs!!

As a Kent man I would add Knole House and gardens in Sevenoaks, two smaller castles with bundles of history Hever Castle and the Cinque Port castle of Walmer, Chatham Dockyards - a full day you will need, Downe House the home of Charles Darwin and Chartwell the country home of Winston Churchill. Oh and the market towns, pretty inland villages and fish and chips on the beach is a must!

Deal, Dover & Walmer all have castles. They are about 20mins apart by car. Most places will have a fish & chip take away. Dependent on when and where you go, I suggest sitting on the beach with them. Watch the seagulls though. You might like to try a full english breakfast, cottage pie, a roast dinner, a ploughman's, cream tea. London is also approximately 1 hour away by train. Enjoy your trip.

During its life Leeds castle has been home to six medieval queens - Eleanor, Isabella, Philippa of Hainhault (wife of Edward III), Joan of Navarre, Catherine de Valois and Catherine of Aragon. Elizabeth I was imprisoned here for a time before her coronation. I live on the Romney Marsh in Kent one of the best places to live, quiet and scenic it’s great walking our dog on the beach which is just at the bottom of our road a five minute walk away.

Kent is known as the Garden of England due to the variety of fruits traditionally grown here; as well as the hops for beer-making, there are numerous apple and cherry orchards, as well as strawberries (Kent strawberries are traditionally served at Wimbledon). It is also famous for the "cob-nuts", a type of Hazelnut, which grow all over the place. In recent years, they have started to grow varieties of grapes for wine-making, beating the French at their own game! 😁 Canterbury Cathedral is not quite the oldest Christian site; about half a mile away, on a housing estate, is St. Martin's Church, which is older. Before St. Augustine arrived in 597AD, the King of Kent, King Ethelbert (a pagan who later converted to Christianity) had already converted a Roman building into a chapel for his wife Bertha, a Frenchwoman who was already a Christian, so she had somewhere to practice her religion. At 7:47 you can see a church in the grounds of Dover Castle. Right at the end of the church, almost attached to it, is a small tower which is actually a Roman lighthouse, or Pharos; this is one of only three surviving Roman lighthouses in the world, the other two being in La Coruna, Spain and Leptis Magna, Libya. At 12:35, the piece of land shown at the base of the White Cliffs is Samphire Hoe. This is a nature reserve that was constructed using the spoil from the Channel Tunnel excavations; when they dug the tunnels, the spoil removed had to go somewhere, so they dumped it on the beach creating a 30 hectare (74 acre) nature reserve using 4.9 million cubic metres of chalk marl. At 14:22 they show Botany Bay in Broadstairs. For some reason they're showing a mirror image of the beach; it's all backwards, lol! When I was growing up, I lived 100 metres from this beach. 🙂 Howletts and Port Lympne are sister parks, owned by the same organisation. Finally, it's not mentioned, but Kent is the oldest county in England. That's enough nit-picking from me. Hope you have a lovely time when you get here! 🙂

Thanks for posting this. There are so many lovely places in Kent that it's difficult to pick a "top 10". Rather than listing "visit Kent Beaches" and "a day at the seaside" which are basically the same thing I wish the blogger had mentioned Sissinghurst. The gardens there are superb and well worth a visit. You mentioned that you're accustomed to driving for hours. The UK is relatively small but please remember that from Kent to get to anywhere north (much of the UK 🙂) you have to get past London and with the amount of traffic in that region that can be a real pain. I'm sure your friend will have the answer to this, however.

Kent, just south of London, is called 'The garden of England' because it's green, and beautiful, and I don't even live there! Hopefully if you come over next summer you'll see for yourself. Leeds Castle is an absolute 10000% visit. Early next year, when you have your dates confirmed, let people know, maybe even have a subscribers day and people can meet up and spend a day/evening with you both in a quaint English pub in the countryside! Southern England is magnificent, especially when the sun shines, and Kent, Sussex, Dorset (Bournemouth/Poole) & Devon are great places to visit too. And yes, further north is spectacular too, but you will already know this! PS Love is you correct the A1 geek with Whitstable, that absolutely correct Natasha

Near Ramsgate-The Hurricane and Spitfire Museum,Manston, which is free, apart from asking for a donation. The unique Shell Grotto, The Old Kent Market, The Harbour Arm & Shell Lady Statue at the end, all in Margate. The Powell-Cotton Museum,Quex Park, Birchington on Sea, which has Dioramas to rival The Natural History Museum,all close to Broadstairs, Margate, Ramsgate, Reculver and the little shops and beach town of Whitstable. Sandwich is delightful, Medieval, boat trips, history, then there's Deal, Kingsdown, Walmer and little Walmer Castle-practically on the beach, with stunning gardens, St Margaret's at Cliffe for The Coastguard Pub on the beach where you can watch ferries from Dover coming and going from behind the cliffs, also for The Pines Gardens and Tea Rooms. Then there's unique, other worldly Dungeness, The Kent and East Sussex Steam Railway-beautiful countryside.

There are many RSPB Bird reserves in Kent ALL are worth a visit! I would add Chatham with Rochester. There are the dockyards where wooden naval ships built and has one of many Lifeboat Museums in England, It might be costly but is worth a visit. Romney Marsh with Dungeness (There is a good gastro pub called the Pilot. has fish and chips as well as other dishes. Dungeness is also on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, a Miniature railway and is well worth a round trip. There are 2 hill ranges: The North and South Downs, also worth a visit. Have fun, but remember: There are other beautiful parts of the United Kingdom to visit!
