The arch was imported piece by piece from Shanghai, a city which Liverpool is twinned with. The ceremonial arch stands at 13.5 metres tall and is the largest in Europe, in fact it is the tallest standing arch in any Chinatown outside of mainland China.

When my daughter decided to go to university in Liverpool I must admit I was very worried (it was not many years after the Toxteth riots). I found the city amazing. We arrived Saturday morning and, after dropping off our daughter we went into the city centre. No problem parking on the river front and a fraction of the parking charges down south. She stayed very close to the first Cathedral and her graduation ceremony was held there. I don’t know why but the atmosphere there kept making my eyes blur when she went up for her award. China Town, although small, if fantastic. We were walking in Sefton Park and at the far end of the path we’re a group of half a dozen 10-15 year old boys on bikes. They came bombing towards my wife and I, and I was sure we were about to get mugged. As they reached us they stopped and just started chatting to us. Then off they went. Although often difficult to understand (accent) we found people so friendly. One thing that did shock us was seeing glass covers over all the displays of sweets etc in the shops. Something we had never seen before. I am not a lover of cities (ex SE London originally). Liverpool is a city I could happily live in. Everyone should visit it if they get the chance.

Isn't it amazing how jaundiced people's perceptions are from the horrible biased southern media. Liverpool is one of the safest cities in the UK. Dear Debbie and Natasha, I have been subscribed to your channel for a few months now. And very much appreciate the love and warmth you have shown for the UK, and especially our Armed Forces. And particularly the Royal Marines and the Royal Marines Band Service. I was a proud member of HMRM's (though not the Band) for 24 years -> 1966 to 1990. Having said that, I am also a very proud Liverpudlian too! I have just watched the video on Liverpool above. I don't want to be disparaging, but it really didn't do the city justice! Very few - if any - "Northern Hemisphere" city's look their best in the autumn, as winter approaches. That said, the warmth and friendliness of the people who live there will brighten the darkest of days. It has the greatest number of architectural "Grade 1" listed buildings in the UK - outside of London! It has two famous Premier Legue (and International Football (soccer to you!) Clubs -> Liverpool FC, and Everton FC. It has two Carhedrals, multiple Museums and Theatre's too. The city is twined with Odessa in Ukrain. And when Ukrain couldn't host this years Eurovision Song Contest, Liverpool stepped up and did it on behalf of Ukrain. It's said to have been one of the best in the competitions long history - Google it! Liverpool was founded by "Royal Charter" in 1207 - yes 1207! - by King John. When it was little more than a small settlement on the shore of the River Mersey. It was once one of the world's principal trading ports with a worldwide trading reputation. Regretabbly, that included the Slave Trade, too, back in the day. During WW2, the city was the Royal Navy's and Allied Forces Maritime Headquarters for the Battle of the Atlantic. Churchil described it as the longest battle of the war! The HQ, is preserved and is open to the public to view! With the introduction of "Container Shipping," the city's old Albert Dock estate - now called the Royal Albert Dock! The pre-fix "Royal" was added a few years ago. The abandond docks underwent a huge regeneration programme bringing new lfe to the docks and surrounding area. It is now at the heart of the city's many cultural and tourist attractions. The regeneration programme is ongoing, Everton FC, are in the process of building a new multimillion pound football stadium on the site of the regenerated north docks area. I could go on, but I'll call it time here. May I suggest you Google: "Liverpool, its History and Attractions" to see and learn about this wonderful city and its people, you won't be disappointed - enjoy.........🇬🇧👍🏻👍🏻!!!

hi Terence - great summary - I'm a proud Scouser (blue nose) living down south - as you alluded to Liverpool was one of the biggest ports in the world hence being twinned with Shanghai (seafront of latter looks similar to old Liverpool as designer of the Liver building was responsible) - not surprised China gifted us that arch - I read recently Liverpool had the first Mosque in Europe - the Scandinavian sailors stew "lob skauz" gave us our name - truly a melting pot of world cultures in it heyday - the people make the place and are very welcoming - people in London can be friendly by the way - you just need the tube to break down and they'll then start talking 😂

Born and bread scouser here. I absolutely love my city, there’s literally something for everyone and a million and one things to see and do. Hidden gems for me are rococco coffee house on lord street (find a seat by a fire or a window seat in the front room and watch the world go by) and bold street is an ever changing road of amazing places to eat and grab a coffee. If you do ever visit, please go into the cathedrals, paddy’s wigwam is one of the most stunning buildings ever from the inside. The library is gorgeous with a mix of the new and old, make sure you go into the children’s library section for the architecture. There’s so many little places and streets to explore as well as the big main streets, you could easily spend days just wondering around and exploring.

Liverpool/USA. In a previous post, I mentioned that 9,000,000 immigrants ( from all over Europe ) passed through Liverpool ( between 1830 and 1930 ) on their way to North America. Now, that got me to wondering about how many present day Americans have an ancestor who passed through Liverpool. It must be a crazy number. For example, I have relatives in Canada who can trace part of their ancestry back to a Irishman who sailed from Liverpool in the 1840s. Now currently, there are at least 50 living people ( that I know of ) who have ancestry connections with than solitary Irishman.

It has such a lot of history in Liverpool I would recommend at least a weekend there.❤

I grew up on the North Wales coast aka the 'Scouse Riviera' as we're on Liverpool's doorstep so the whole coastline has been a favourite holiday and day-out destination for scousers for many years, so I've always felt a close affinity with our Scouse neighbours, and they're a good bunch, I also always feel a strong political affinity between us Welsh and the Scourers as we're both very socially orientated swaying to the left with a bit of a militant underbelly.
@francisedward8713

This is so true! I have spent more time in North Wales, as a Scouser, than probably anywhere else in the world, except Liverpool. Soon will change though because I now live in Cambridge, but Wales is such a magical country; it's hard to explain. When you cross the border and drive through the valleys and rolling hills and dramatic landscapes, it feels like another world. And the accent is so melodic - I could listen to it all day.

And Liverpool is often referred to as the 'capital of North Wales' because of the strong Welsh ancestry and influences on the city, along with Ireland, with it also being dubbed the 'most Irish city outside of Ireland'. It makes more sense in this context, then, that Scousers identify the least out of all major English cities as being English (along with the prejudice from the rest of the English, and the scapegoating of the Scouse in the English media). The Scouse accent is also unique because it is a blend of mostly Irish, with Welsh and Norwegian influences - and essentially no English influence. In the past, Liverpool was a borderland - meaning it was often switched between kingdoms through warfare - it was never clearly English until a lot later than other English cities.
@markjones127
@markjones127 Жыл бұрын
Really? I'm no sure that would go down too well in North Wales as a whole, us on the North Wales riviera have close links to the scousers as I said, but inland there's still a lot of resentment for Liverpool, or the council at least, for the Tryweryn valley incident in the 60's, which Welsh nationalists still fell very strongly about, Cofiwch Dryweryn (Remember Tryweryn) is still a common slogan used to this day inland.
@davidowen2396
@davidowen2396 Жыл бұрын
@@markjones127 I think that's overstated...I grew up well away from the coast in North Wales with one Welsh and one Scouse parent....a common combination in my day where I grew up (now rural inland Conwy). Most of the builders who built the streets of Liverpool in the early 1900s came from Caernarfonshire and Anglesey areas and the cultural influence, along with Ireland is interwoven so there's not such and "us and them" thing. The whole Cofiwch Dryweryn thing is something that has been reborn and blown up (certainly the painted logo which originated on a rock outside Aberystwyth which seems to have been used commercially nowadays). In recent years it has become emblematic for younger nationalists..but it was less so when I was young.

Hi Debbie and Natasha. I'm a Scouser living in my home city. I've lived and travelled the UK and love my country. But like everyone I've met across the UK, would be super biased towards my home town. But having said that, we are a city that is geared towards tourism. So we lay as much on as we can. I spend a lot of time throughout the year in the city centre. You'd think that being from, and growing up in Liverpool would probably make me very used to and underwhelmed by it. But it's a city that is constantly changing and moving forward. Nothing stays the same for too long. So it constantly reinvents itself over and over again. I've taken many a friend from out of town in to the city I'm so very proud of for a tour. Up to now it hasn't failed to impress them. Please consider visiting our fine and proud city on your UK visit. Happy holidays 👍

Liverpool has a truly incredible history. It has been through some ups and downs over the last 100 years, but is currently on the up. I'm not a scouser but have a son-in-law who is. I've visited the city dozens of time and, in January '24, will be sailing from the Ocean Terminal on a cruise. It's where the Titanic sailed from in 1912, and also where hundreds of thousands of people emigrated to the US. Your ancestors possibly?

I’ve been everywhere and there is no other place that I wish I had been born and raised in more than Liverpool. The people there treat you like family and there is amazing live music to be heard everywhere. You must spend an evening in the Cavern Club. You might be surprised that both Queen and Elton John also honed their early show skills there. BTW, I love the Stones and the Beatles. Did you know that the Beatles not only recommend the then little known Stones to their first record company and that they even gave them their first hit UK single. Everyone in the music and entertainment business thru this day is beholding to the Beatles for one aspect or another of their careers, but there’s not enough space to explain all that here.😊
