Pubs don't have doormen. Pub is an abbreviation of Public House. As in a house anyone can go in. Most pubs you can go in as a family with young children and babies. So you get asked for ID at the bar before ordering. 16 and 17 year olds can legally drink Wine, Beer, and (alcoholic) Cider with a meal. Purchased by someone over 18. A lot of people don't drink alcohol. There will always be a selection of non alcoholic drinks and most pubs also serve tea and coffee. Food is normally ordered at the bar, and delivered to your table. In some places the tables have a number on them which you have to give when ordering the food. Unless they have a dedicated restaurant area. Where it will be waitress service. Yes we can buy alcohol on Sunday some places have restricted hours. Pubs are normally open by 11 AM with some open earlier to serve breakfast. The 11PM closing is down to the individual pub. Normally later on Friday and Saturday nights. Usually on a week night they don't have enough customers later than 11 to cover costs. Our local village pub is licenced untill 1AM every night. But their advertised closing times are 10PM Monday to Thursday, Midnight Friday and Saturday, 8PM Sunday. But if enough people are in they will stay open past the advertised times.

I'm now 71 and pubs/bars ( the term is interchangeable ) in England have gradually morphed over the years from the (U.S bar) into more of the (U.S.) tavern though of course there are still plenty of the old style left. When I first started going to bars (underage btw) they were generally pure drinking places, maybe you could buy crisps/salted nuts or pickled eggs but not much else, there would be a dartboard and maybe some other pub game like bar-billiards, shove ha'penny etc. and there would be cards or dominoes for entertainment. In many pubs the Bar room was reserved for men only and women had to drink in the Snug room and even then in many places they had to be with a man. Over the years Pubs gradually changed by adding Juke boxes, Pool tables ,T.v's Quiz/Space Invaders machines and slowly started serving food in the form of firstly toasted sandwiches and eventually full meals. In many bars you would find that certain seats "belonged" to certain customers who got very upset if you sat there. It's not at all unusual to order non-alcoholic drinks in pubs.

Pubs in the UK used to have a games room. This is where the pool table, dart board, slot machine would be. But then more started becoming food pubs. So the games room became the restaurant bit and the fruit machine got moved to a corner of the bar. Some pubs even had skittle alleys. These are rare, but a gem.

The video you watched (and almost every one I've seen) about british pubs give the impression that all british pubs are like he described. Realistically what we call a pub covers everything that you would think of as a bar, tavern, Inn or pub. We just call them all pubs. So if you're ever over here and decide to go to a pub ask around to make sure you get the kind of pub you're looking for.

Except british pubs are all those things and more, because unlike (I think) the US and Canada, whole families with children are welcome, as well as dogs (which are often catered for with bowls of water on the floor), and the atmosphere of a pub is very cosy and much more like being in your own living room. IMO, in spite of what Lawrence says, there isn’t really an equivalent of the British or Irish pub anywhere in the world.

@@penname5766 I totally agree. In my opinion, the reason there isn't anything like a British or Irish pub in the World is because its the clientele that make it what it is. Wonder when that was? Virtually no drinking alcohol allowed by employers nowadays in UK for maybe 20 years. We all stopped voluntarily ten years before that. But going to US in 1973, was amazed at small pints, very low grade beer, inability of Americans to handle what little alcohol they were taking in. They were astonished at ability of us Europeans to be unaffected by their beer. Pub opening times in the UK are a legacy of the WW1. During the day they were open 12.00 - 14.30. This was to make sure the workforce came back to work and didn't stay in the pub. They closed at 11pm to make sure everyone wasn't too pissed for work the next day. Along with the smoking ban and cheap supermarket alcohol, the relaxing of pub licencing laws allowing them to open and close when they wanted, helped kill the pub trade. Everytime I visit my home town I see another boarded up pub. A good example would be the Sunday dinner drink. It used to be the best drink of the week. Everyone would be in the pub the moment it opened and for 2 hours it was rammed with people. Now they just wander in at all times and there is hardly any atmosphere.

The legal drinking alcohol age in the UK is currently 5. When I was a child, it was perfectly normal to give babies "gripe water" which had lots of alcohol in it. At the age of 4 my parents allowed me to drink small quantites of stuff like "Snowballs" and "Baby Cham(ois)". This would all now be illegal under the age of 5. Even today Canadian gripe-water still contains alchohol. Most British pubs serve hot food, and many have morphed into "Gastro-pubs" which serve food of a quality equal to any restaurant. Young children often sit with their familly in our pubs and have soft drinks whilst eating a Sunday roast for example. Sixteen year olds are allowed to drink alchohol in the pub, provided they are eating a meal, and an adult is purchasing the alchohol. The legal limit for drink driving in the UK is higher than in most other countries in the world, and is the same for learner drivers/new drivers. Alcohol can be purchased in all supermarkets, many of which are open 24 hour except on Sundays. "Off-Licences" also exist as well as home delivery alchohol services. In the distant past there were strong "temperance" movements in the UK, but we never had prohibition. The Royal Navy is internationally infamous for both heavy alchohol consumption, and extreme strong language, which has lead to concerns on their handling of nuclear weapons. We do not have to hide alchohol in paper bags, or in the car, and passengers are allowed to drink alcohol in the car. You can generally consume alcohol in any public space, although some local councils have banned it using local bye-laws, and the London tube network banned drinking on its trains in 2008.

Natasha and Debbie, the authentic fish and chip experience is only to be gained from a traditional *fish and chip shop* or *fish and chip restaurant* (which is essentially a fish and chip shop with a very basic restaurant attached where you can sit down and eat). Normally, when you buy your fish and chips, they are wrapped up for you (remember to ask for salt and vinegar to be put on them for you, as is traditional) in waxed paper or in a plastic carton, overwrapped with (blank) newsprint paper (this used to be printed newspaper in the old days!). You take the fish and chips home and eat them *immediately* either straight from the wrappings using your fingers or served on a warmed plate and eaten with knife and fork, optionally in both cases with a slice of bread and butter and a pot of tea. You *may* find nice fish and chips in other outlets e.g. pubs and ordinary restaurants. These are likely to be much more variable and less reliable in terms of cooking methods, recipes and quality. In my experience, these non-specialists are less likely to get the batter right, or in some cases, you may not even get batter at all and the fish will come (inauthentically) fried in breadcrumbs. The chips sometimes leave something to be desired in such places too. They need to be chunky and not spindly like American fries and they need to be deep fried rather than cooked in the oven. So a fish and chip shop or fish restaurant with a good reputation is to be recommended for tourists as the most reliable way of experiencing fish and chips for the first time. Cod is the most common fish served with chips. Haddock is fairly common too, usually slightly more expensive and you may need to wait for it to be cooked (but slightly more tasty, in my opinion, justifying the wait). Portions can be large. I always have whatever smaller portion is being offered (e.g. senior citizen's).

So to join the conversation Pubs do often close before 00:00 but usually there are clubs or Bars that are open far later, often until 5am on weekends, usually people will either end the night earlier if only go to pub, or will start in a pub and migrate over. There are as he stated pubs that do stay open later, will just depend on their premises licence. To answer your question around liquor, here places have to have premises licence in order to sell alcohol, this will state what time as part of this licence that they can sell alcohol, but doesn't differentiate between types of alcohol, places might have restricted hours that they can sell alcohol, but isn't normally a flat ban on a day, for example my old job used to be allowed to sell alcohol from 8am every day except Sunday, but on a Sunday could sell from 10am.

@simonburford93062 жыл бұрын
First of all, when they say that there's no table service in the UK, that includes food (unless it's a pub with a dedicated attached restaurant). You go up to the bar and order food and then sometimes it's brought to you but often you have to go up and collect it when you're called. As far as Sunday alcohol sales are concerned, I've worked in a convenience store and the alcohol license awarded to a shop will specify what hours alcohol can be sold (if at all) on every day of the week. In my experience, Sunday sales hours are usually the same as every other day, except that you have to remember the Sunday trading laws in general. Small shops that sell perishable goods can open as normal on Sundays, but all other shops and supermarkets are only allowed to trade between 10AM and 4PM on Sundays - so obviously, if the shop is shut you can't buy alcohol. There are plenty of "corner shops" that sell alcohol though, and since we generally have no rules about drinking in the street people will just walk about with cans they've brought from home anyway. Not that I condone this kind of behaviour or anything, of course!

In the UK pubs open at 11am and generally stop serving at 11pm, I used to organise and work at beer festivals, there are many each year all over the UK and are generally open Thursday to Saturday, pubs can apply for an extension to the opening hours, usually till 2am, but the main reason pubs close at 11pm is that a 12 hour shift plus the time it takes before opening and the time after closing can be several hours, and the UK has fair labour laws to prevent workers being exploited (especially at unsociable hours) there are certain expectations to this for example, firemen/firewomen working night shifts will work for 15 hours, but remember that they can sleep in that time and are encouraged to do so, one of my brother in laws was a station officer (Head of the station), he was promoted several times after that, but this meant that he no longer went to fires etc except if he had any particular reason to, I don't really like the man but I have great respect for what he did, I could never see the things that he will have. So yes our pubs closing at 11pm is to protect people working in the business.

We met at 8.00 a.m. in a pub full of Post Office workers who had finished their night shift and there was a full-on drinking session with karaoke going on. That was 1986. Rocking doesn't cover it.

Same thing with away days for football. Supporters busses meet at the pubs first thing in the morning, here pubs were always 7am until 1am. I wasnt sure if the 7am was the whole country or just local for the fisherman. One opened at 6am and you got a pint and a full breakfast deal. We would leave the club at 3am go to a house party, then pub at 6am for breakfast and a pint😂🏴

hey, i have just recently been seeing ur videos on youtube and just wanted to say i love the content and the conversation u bring when comes to the subtle differences between Britain and America. with regards to the pubs question alot of what i have experienced from America going to a bar showcases alot of the same characteristics of a british pub, what i would say personally is the big difference and this counts for any country trying to replicate this feeling is the aesthetic of a british pub, by that i mean subtle things like historic age, haunting stories, sticky floors and bars can never get rid of, even the stories from generations all have a connection with a specific pub

Please refrain from saying the word PERIOD !! It means something COMPLETELY different in the UK !! You can go into a pub at any age but need to be 18 to get served alcohol . We do have TVs in some pubs because, as you know, WE love our football ! We have darts, dominoes, cribbage, bar skittles and long alley skittles. Stella is called " wife beater" in the UK because it's so strong that men will get pissed, go home and....beat up the wife !! We were told at school( in the 60s/70s) that there were US GALLONS and British gallons. Also that LITER (US) and LITRE( the rest of the world). We can buy " liquor" at ANY time, from pubs(when they are open), off licences, supermarkets, corner shops. PLEASE PLEASE do a Scottish slang video. Try and cover ALL areas of Scotland as there are MANY differences depending where you are. Try DORIC language from the East of Scotland ( Peterhead/ Aberdeen area ).

I live in South Wales, we have loads of Pubs but we also have loads of private pubs, called Clubs. Clubs are usually run by a committee and usually have more facilities than pubs. My local club is called the Pontyclun Institute & Athletic Club, or PIAC for short. It’s building is over 100 years old. During WW1 (1914 - 1919) it was used as an emergency hospital and has a blue plaque to commemorate this. It has only been selling alcohol for the last 60 years. It started off as more of a large village hall. It has a regular bar with seating for about 50. by the side of the bar is a room with 2 full size snooker tables with seating along the sides for an audience. It also has an adjacent dart room, another room for fpr pool. Again on the ground floor is a lounge bar seating about 50 in slightly more comfortable seating. Next to that is a concert hall with sunken dance floor with kitchens and used for concerts and wedding receptions. Also we have a skittle alley, a very low tech form of ten pin bowling and also has a Lawn Bowls green. I pay an annual membership of £15 but the drinks are cheaper than a pub.

I seem to remember that the difference between imperial gallons and US gallons dates back to the 1700s. One of us adopted the wine gallon, the other adopted the beer gallon. We don't really make a distinction between a bar and a tavern. Some of our pubs are very ancient indeed. I know of one not far from me which was built in the 14t century, and its furnishings are from the 17th!

So, a lot of night clubs and very very busy pubs/bars in the UK will have security/bouncers/door staff - To I.D people and also top drunk people getting in. (Yes, being drunk in a pub is illegal, shocker). Most of the time it is down to the Bar staff to I.D someone and either refuse service or serve them based on their age and the I.D. It's usually a Challenge 21 or Challenge 25 policy. My personal mentality is "if you're not sure, I.D" - It's also common now for bars/pub to have a Refusal Book - it's basically just "cover your arse" thing that you write down any Refusal of service. Usually, Date/Time, Description of Person, Drinks ordered, Why refused. For example: 12th March 2022, Young male, grey top/brown hair/stubble/ordered 2 Lagers and a Shot of Vodka, No I.D - Refused. The Police will actively send in people to "test" Licensed Premises, deliberately under-age and without I.D. Like Mystery shoppers, only, the consequences for the Bar staff and Establishment can be severe, if they mess up.

It's odd that he focused so heavily on lager. Traditional British pub culture tends to centre around ales/bitters rather than lagers (although we do import plenty of lager!)
@andyleighton36162 жыл бұрын
Lawrence doesn't really know his pubs. For example talking about beers he doesn't mention cask ale which I don't think you have in the US. Also all pubs will have cider. As for pub closing times - most days in the week they will close at 11pm, but in town centres on Thursday and at the weekend some will stay open to midnight or later. Generally that is the time for last orders, you still have drinking up time. As far as spirits (what you call hard liquor) goes there is no problem with buying that any day of the week. Although we don't have free dispense (where the barman just pours it from a bottle into a glass), we have them mounted behind the bar with optics which give a measured dispense (either 25ml or 35ml). In general in the UK pubs break down into a number of types. Some just have drinks (and snacks like nuts, pork scratchings, crisps and maybe pickled eggs). But even there they may well be more homely than the average US bar. Some will have food, or a food section. Some will be split between a public bar and a lounge. Some are really just vertical drinking establishments and don't really merit the term pub for me. For traditional pubs, if they do food it isn't the focus of the pub. However there are gastro-pubs (which sometimes from the outside look identical) where when you go in the focus is definitely the food and they don't really want people sitting around chatting and drinking for extended time. Quite a lot of UK pubs have a slot-machine. Quite a lot of UK pubs are family friendly - especially in rural and suburban areas. Some will have play-areas in the garden area for the kids. As for fish & chips, then you want a traditional chippy IMO. Pubs can do some great stuff steak & kidney pudding, sunday roasts, thai food, etc

As others have said, the drinking age in your own home is 5. At a pub, you can have alcohol from 16 with a meal if an adult orders it for you. For everything else, it's 18. By the mid-2000s you generally expected to be asked for ID (although I did get served at 15 once, no questions asked!). This has become enforced more since local authorities started cracking down. Wetherspoons (a major pub chain) puts signs up saying they will ask for ID if you look younger than 25 - I was still being asked for ID when I was well into my 20s. You generally won't get table service at a pub. You order at the bar, pay upfront and take any drinks or pub snacks (crisps, pork scratchings, peanuts, etc) back with you. If you order a meal, you still pay at the bar, but they will bring the food out to you. Many pubs are open all day, so you could go in for breakfast or lunch and soft drinks/coffee/tea. Children are welcome so you can go as a family, and underage teens can meet up there during the day (not for alcohol, of course!). At our local, they have a set time where they kick out anyone underage and put doormen on, who will ID people before they go in and keep out any obvious troublemakers. Most pubs will serve fish and chips, whether they are gastro or traditional. As with anything, there may be exceptions - some smaller pubs might not serve food, or won't serve food all day due to staffing. A very traditional small pub will function more like a bar and only offer snacks and drinks. Some pubs have darts and pool, although I wouldn't say these are particularly common anymore (you wouldn't generally find these in a gastro pub, and gastro pubs are everywhere now). The odd pub or working men's club will have a snooker room in the back. Not all pubs have TVs but they aren't uncommon. Normally they show "soccer football" 😂 but you might catch the rugby or cricket instead.

Hi Natasha and Debbie, great video as always, loved the beginning and end when you were showing your PO Box stuff. Your videos are so professional, such a talent you have. Pubs I think he is a little out of date as most pubs serve food. Usually traditional British but other food too. Most have table service except some chains like whetherspoon’s where you order at the bar and they bring food to table. We have sports bars and traditional pubs but again most do good now. Pubs with a DJ/dancing don’t usually serve food. I used to play darts and pool but I can’t remember the last time I went in a pub with either, they are still around. Also a lot of pubs stay open way past 11pm, usually at weekends. Yes we can buy alcohol on a Sunday, years ago from an off license but supermarkets/convenience stores all sell it. I have moved up a level so saw Debbie’s trifle, looked amazing. Take care.

The 11pm thing is also very much for a traditional pub type of place. Bars and nightclubs can stay open as long as they like, although most close around 2am as by that point they're probably too quiet to be making much money. Most UKs towns or cities have streets that are nothing but bars and pubs, and there will always be plenty of places to go after 11pm.

Non-alcoholic drinks in UK pubs used to be very limited - fountain cola/lemonade at an extortionate markup, maybe mixers/juice at an even worse markup if the pub sold mixed drinks, and *possibly* tea and filter coffee if you were very lucky). Over the past twenty years or so the range has grown, particularly at pubs that serve food since they're more likely to have people bringing their children for a meal. The markup on basic soft drinks is still pretty bad, but you can generally expect there to be some bottled premium drinks as well now, plus decent coffee-making equipment. In addition, in the last five years or so some pubs have brought in a few alcohol-free bottled beers/ciders of generally increasing quality - this may or may not be of any interest to you.

Hi Debbie and Natasha, love your channel, in Britain when you go into a pub they usually do food as well, but you have to order your food at the bar as well as your drinks it is then brought to your table when it’s ready, whilst you have to take your own drinks back to the table……..congrats on your sobriety Debbie keep going girl, I always think you can have more fun sober as people will say “I can’t remember what I did last night” and if you’re with them you can just say “no but I do 🤣🤣🤣”

In the UK we tend to have what we tend to call gastro-pubs, which are pubs that you get meals in, or tavern in the states, where you will get table service, but they are also pubs when the kitchen is closed and have no table service. We do have sports bars in the UK, but they are mainly in large towns or cities. A lot of pubs will have a TV but they are turned down and not the focal point of the pub. The reason for the difference in gallons. In the UK and the US we used to have a few measurements that were a gallon Wine, beer and corn were all different amounts. Then in 1824 they thought it was silly to have so many, so they took the average and made that the Imperial Gallon which we use today. In the US you went with the wine gallon (Queen Anne) as standard, and that is why there is the difference.

I'm an American living in the UK. While COVID changed the normal pattern, ordering in a pub is almost always at the bar unless they have a phone app. Often you'll see a metal coin sized disk with a number on every table. When ordering food at the bar you tell them the table number so they know where to have the food sent when it's done.

Pub opening hours were limited by the parliament at the time of WW1......... apparently the government thought that the consumption of alcohol would hinder the war effort. Legislation has been changed but many pubs still call closing time at 11pm..... I suppose old habits die hard. at the same time, they nationalised the brewery and pubs in my town, Carlisle. This was because we had the world's largest munitions factory just up the road in Gretna and there was a big danger with drunk workers and explosive materials (the workers were extremely well paid and had nothing else to do in their free time except head for the pub). The State Management Scheme strictly regulated drinking, encouraged pub games and food etc and limited opening hours. It finally ended in 1971 and everything was privatised.

Fish & chip shops (as long as you find a good one!) are the best place to get fish & chips, but more often than not are for take away only. You might get good fish & chips in a pub that serves food, but (and this is difficult to describe) they're normally not the same food experience as a traditional 'chippy'. You'll also pay twice as much for half as much in a pub.

Pubs changed around the 1980s, a lot changed from 'bars' (in your meaning) to 'taverns'. Originally pubs were drinking houses where mainly men would go in the evening, you might be lucky to get a stale sandwich or luke warm pie. Since the 1970s they have become family-friendly and more like informal restaurants, and of course, now that they are non-smoking they are much more pleasant. I think the closing time reflects the fact that most pubs are in residential areas. These days they are also open during the day from mid-morning so it's quite common to just go in for tea/coffee and something to eat.

In England, traditional pubs would have a public bar, hence 'pub', and a saloon bar. Saloon bar would be quieter, have more professional clientele and more ladies, no darts, shove h'appeny, skittles, stoolball, or snooker. Public bar noisier, rowdier, more blue collar. Even now, if there is a saloon bar, it may won't have tv. Things get very different in north of England industrial and seaside where bars in town could be huge - contrast small corner of the street residential area pubs. What hasn't mentioned in what I've heard so far is open mike nights for comedy, quiz nights, live music, and board game days. Increasingly, wifi and charging sockets for working as individuals or as groups holding meetings. Successful pubs now offer many options and usually in more affluent areas - in fact, shut down pubs are re-opening in areas that were run down but now getting gentrified with artisan bakeries, coffee, baby clothes, and bicycle repair shops, beards, and cargo bikes

Pubs tend to stay open if they are busy, till 1am or 2am on a weekend, if it's not that busy than they'll probably close earlier. Most places that sell food are more likely to close earlier as a rule. You can buy any type of booze, any day of the week, at any time of the day. We have 24hour garages, Supermarkets and off licences if you want to carry the party on after the pub is closed. Also younger people tend to move on to a night club at 10pm but thats not to say they aren't pubs full and jumping till late! There is basically something for everyone, be it a busy pub, a chilled out pub and everything in-between. Be sure to find a lovely pub with a nice beer garden for a summer afternoon or early evening drink/non-drink. I also no longer drink and find going to the pub just fine.
