I have climbed those steps, years ago ( there has to be 199 steps or they wouldn't reach the top). The fish we ate at Whitby was taken across the road from the fishing boat right into the Fish and Chip Shop, that's fresh!

I worked in Saudi Arabia on a 3 year land surveying contract. We lived in a massive work camp and I had my own porta cabin complete with air conditioning. The more senior members of staff lived in houses near to the coast, two to a house. Among the staff were a small team of divers doing tidal prediction data collection using a couple of power boats. One had twin internal diesel engines and the other had twin 250hp outboard engines. The local Saudi coast guard made them take off one of the outboards because it made their boat faster than anything the coast guard had otherwise. Anyway, the diving team used to spear fish for supper and I was invited for supper one evening. OMG! It was battered grouper and chips and was to die for! By the time we left at the end of the contract I think there wasn't a single grouper left in the area. They told me that they (the grouper) were easy to catch because you could get to within about a foot or two and pull the trigger. Grouper are quite a large fish (about 4/5 foot long) and tasted like cod with big flaky flesh. Sad for the grouper, happy for their prey and even happier for us.

I'm from Kent (known as the Garden of England) but I love Yorkshire. Whitby is a great little place. The steps were built because the original cobbled slope, next to it, is SO steep. There are loads of eateries across the UK that serve fish without the skin. Another town that has really fresh fish is Hastings in East Sussex which has the only beach (The Strand) launched fishing fleet in the UK. The fishermen there have their own little "shops", on the Strand, where they sell fish straight from their boats.

Ladies close to Whitby are the Lavender fields you can treat yourselves to Lavender scones and buy different Lavender products, the is also an ex German POW camp that has been turned in to an interactive museum. You can also get Haddock, Cod and Plaice but it is only Plaice or any of the flat fish that are traditionally eaten with the skin on. Enjoy, P.S. Norfolk Broads are fantastic and Llandudno also has fresh sea food.

I live on the Suffolk/ Norfolk Coast, we have lovely fresh fish and chips too, my favourite is haddock so i don't mind the skin on that, with the batter i don't even notice it, the only other ice cream boat i have seen is at Stratford upon Avon on the river, (Shakespeare was born in Stratford upon Avon) i went about 6 years ago for a lovely day trip. Good video i haven't been to Whitby so looks a nice area to visit.

In Yorkshire we eat Haddock, one of the reasons they leave the skin on the bottom side of the fish is to stop it breaking up in the cooking because it is so fresh.

Also, the skin when cooked has a sweetness unlike any sugar. If any taste can be described as primeval, it's that. Of course, these days almost all the fish you'll eat anywhere is frozen, hence skin off. I've eaten both juxtaposed. Skin on wins, skin off is fine, but skin on wins, fins down.

We visited Whitby this summer whilst staying in Robin Hoods Bay. Whitby was fabulous. Debbie would LOVE the ice cream and sweet shop in Robin Hoods Bay. All the streets are practically vertical so you would work off the additional calories 😊

Whitby is like my second home and we have a bench on the pier for my dad. We go regularly and I love to sit on dad's bench and have a good old chat with him while overlooking the Abbey. The park where the museum is situated is amazing. So beautiful ❤️

Lived down the coast from Whitby during my Childhood and Visited many times its a really lovely place. Unfortunately like many places during the tourist season it gets very busy. However there is also so many more places to visit on the North East Coast. Make sure you have fleece handy the wind even on a nice day can be cutting

I went to whitby for the first time in May this year. When I got to the top of the 199 steps I thought I was going to throw up! The Abbey is stunning, I could have stayed there all day, it really connects you to the past. It's a very dog friendly place, never seen so many dogs in one town, I will definitely return but you definitely need good weather x

It's on the coastal edge of the North Yorks Moors, one of England's National Parks. I used to love going there for birding holidays, great place to see raptors but there's also a lot of woodland as well as the coast. Whitby was the place I used to base myself and go our watching, then come back in the evening and go to one of the cheaper - I was a poor student - chippies.

As a disabled lady, on crutches , my lovely husband this summer helped me fake photos at the Whitby steps. One photo at the bottom, one at the top, same clothes, big smile, big thumbs up! (And a fast car ride in between, to make it seem I’d made it up myself) ! Had fun with that one!

I live an hour from Whitby so have climbed the 199 steps many times. There are a lot of places to get fish and chips there and icecream so you should definitely visit! There's also a Harry Potter type steam train that goes from the centre of Whitby into the moors. Again, definitely worth doing. A day trip is long enough x

Whitby is 30 miles away from where I live and is considered in our back yard. The North East Coast and the North Yorkshire Moors are all within spitting distance. It truly is a great place to live.

Best fish and chip batter whisk beer with flour till texture of thin paint ( ie covers back of spoon), heat frying oil to 180c dust cod fillets in four dip in batter - deep fry turning regularly - enjoy

Check out Rye & Whitstable, Leeds castle & Dover Castle & the white cliffs of Dover. You’ll love it. I live about two miles from Leeds Castle, it’s one of the most beautiful in the country & has a lot of history & I think was actually owned by an American lady a long time ago 😘

"The Magpie" Cafe usually has long queues waiting outside for a table, this is because The Magpie has the best fish and chips in Whitby xx. There is a Ice Cream boat on the canal at Skipton in Yorkshire xx

Whitby is one of our favourite places, all the fish and chip places are good but we love the Magpie, it doesn't just do fish in batter but does a lot of other fish dishes too, it's worth queuing for! They also do gluten free. Whitby is a great place just to wander around, it has such a great atmosphere.

Years ago we did the cliff top walk from Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay and stayed at a camp site on the cliffs in Whitby. It was a foggy night and the Whitby Bull (fog horn) was sounding all night so didn’t get much sleep. Ahh the joys of camping. Robin Hoods Bay is beautiful.

My primary school used to organise trips to places around England. Fairborne in Wales was one of them. Memorable in its own right as it was an adventure holiday that included abseiling, rock climbing, gorge walking, kayaking, cave walks to a slate mine lagoon (still, crystal clear water about 150ft deep surrounded by an amphitheatre of cliffs as high as the lagoon is deep), orienteering and horse riding. That was when we were 11. But the previous year we spent 4 days in Whitby and Scarborough. Even 35 years later, I remember it vividly. What an enchanting place.

When you guys get to Scotland you should visit the ruins of Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire which inspired Stoker's description of Castle Dracula. It's not too far from Dunnottar Castle which blew you away in an earlier video of (Think of a Number) Things You Must See in Scotland.

In the Dracula story, a ship pulls into Whitby harbour and crashes against the harbour wall. Everyone on board is dead, even the skipper who has tied himself to the ship's wheel in an effort to get the boat into port. As people look on in horror, a large, black dog (Dracula in disguise) leaps ashore, runs up the 199 steps and disappears. The steps always seem an easy climb because they have placed seats there at intervals so that you can take a rest and admire the view. I live within an easy drive of Whitby and visit often. It is a lovely, rollicking seaside town, oozing with history and very, very popular with tourists. The whole N.Yorkshire coast is wonderful and you should watch a video on Robin Hood's Bay. Jet is not found in many places around the world and the Romans coveted it when they invaded England. The jewellery shops are delightful but, even a small piece of jet, set in silver, is more expensive than you would imagine. An American friend visited me once: she was from the Mid-West and had never seen the sea. I took her to Whitby and parked up on the cliffs, next to the Abbey. Then we walked through the grounds to the church and emerged with a sweeping view of the sea. She stood there, stunned, for a long time. Later, down on a beach, she whipped off her shoes and went for a paddle in the cold North Sea. I shall never forget the look of delight on her face. Thank you for yet another enjoyable video. PS I've been to the famous Magpie which always has a huge queue. But other places are just as good. I like the skin-on fillets - the skin goes crispy when deep-fried. Whitby is an inspirational place. Lewis Carroll also wrote Alice in Wonderland here - hence the gardens in his memory. There is an ice-cream boat called the Two Hoots moored by the Millennium Bridge in York.

I used to go to the Whitby Goth Weekends, they are still my favourite time of year but I can't always find the time. I used to love the challenge of climbing to the Abbey but since my MS diagnosis it's very difficult now. You can try to run into the magpie, but you will struggle with the huge line of people travelling down the street... The food is that good.

There's a road up to the Abbey, so you could get a taxi! That's the ship's doctor who would frequently have to amputate limbs. The patient would be given lots of rum, but that's all.

Chester might be of interest to you. It was the largest walled Roman fort in Britain. The walls are still intact and you can walk around them. The city stand's on the banks of the river Dee. It also has the largest amphitheatre in the country and is just out side the city walls. I really advise you to check it out.

The amputation you saw in the boat museum would be demonstrating how dangerous life on board was. Accidents or bullet/canon wounds could shatter bones and the on board 'surgeon' would often have to amputate limbs to save the sailors' lives. No anaesthetic other than rum and a piece of wood in the mouth. Ouch!

Hi great vid as usual. The reasons for leaving the skin on the fish is that it holds the fish together, and most importantly it keeps the fish moist and stops it from drying out. The skin is so thin that unless you look for it you would not even know it was there. You should try it yourself. There is a vid by KZbinr Da Malat that shows you how to make fish and chips, with his secret recipe for really crispy batter.

Whitby is famous for the abbey, fossils, fish and chips, Whitby jet, Whitby scampi, the Whitby goth festival and a hundred other things. The fish and chips are legendary and you can get skin on or not, I prefer not. Whitby scampi is also legendary and a version is available in most uk supermarkets. It’s a beautiful place and worth a visit. In fact the whole area is with Scarborough and robins hood bay nearby.

The skin on fish is the best part. The skin, to my mind, holds most of the flavour of the fish you're eating. Many fish restaurants or chippy's will serve fish with skin on (I don't think cod has skin on). I agree some fish you wouldn't eat the skin but you don't notice it on haddock and it's an essential part ladies!

@@BIGDAVE466 Same with Plaice. Haddock and Plaice are two flat fishes that should always be served with skin on. You'll have no "meat" left if you took the skin of these types of fish.

the wife reminded me to suggest a hotel the one we stayed in called "the stables whitby" its not on the coast but not far from it, the reason we stayed so far from the coast is the bloody seagulls, first thing in the morning you can hear them... nice little drive few minutes and you there... oh and the hotel has a nice bar restaurant with fresh sea food.

I'm a regular visiter to Whitby living only 45 minuts away. It's a wonderful place to visit and the magpie cafe is regularly voted best fish and chips. Have a look at some steampunk/goth weekends at Whitby I'm sure you would love this, thanks for your videos which I always enjoy

Hi, if you do ever get over and visit Whitby you must see Scarborough. It’s a seaside town just south of Whitby and mixes old fashioned seaside fun with flashy amusements. Another place to see is my home town of Lincoln, we have an amazing cathedral and castle. I’d happily be your your guide 😊. Thanks for the videos ladies

My Grandparents lived in Whitby at the top of the East Cliff. Their old house fell down a few years ago. We spent most of our school summer holidays there and it was like a second home. I loved it, and still do. However, Whitby has become a victim of its own success, and it gets so packed with tourists during the summer that it is actually unpleasant to try and walk anywhere or go inside anywhere because of the dense crowds and queues to eat.

@@ianprince1698, Yes we often go off-peak to visit family and have a few days away - but I wouldn't choose to go between June and September. Last time we went in summer was for my father's funeral a few years ago. It was Regatta week and it was hopeless trying to get parked anywhere. Plus every single pub/ cafe /fish and chip shop had long queues outside. We ended up going down the coast to Sandsend for a bite to eat.

We visit Whitby regularly and usually stay in a cottage next to the railway so we can watch the steam trains come and go while also overlooking the harbour. So many things to see and do. We have seen the hand of glory ( the mummified hand ) in the museum. We have been to Whitby Brewery, been up and down both the steps and the donkey road next to them. Eaten in a lot of the cafes but my favourite is Humble Pie and Mash.

I’m going to Whitby next weekend for the Goth Festival. The video didn’t show a lot, if didn’t show the beautiful harbour area or where the bridge and main shops are. There is always something a bit weird and random happening whenever we go and there is a certain vibe to the place you can’t capture in a video. Parking is a nightmare though as most people have the spaces for the full day and if your not early enough you could be endlessly looking around for a spot

I always drive to the car park on top of the cliffs, next to the Abbey, and then walk down the 199 steps. There are always plenty of free spaces. However, I don't know what it will be like during the Goth festival - a lot of people might want to be up near the ruins.

@@diamondlil7819 that sounds like a good idea (apart from the having to go up again lol) I have only been up to the Abbey once before as before that, I had always got my little ones in pushchairs. I loved looking round the church but the Abbey gave me a very eerie feeling and my son had several nightmares about the place. Very spooky lol

As a Geordie I think Americans always pass by this great city. It's a very welcoming city and a party city. It has masses of history too and we had King Charles 1st here during the civil war. We have a castle hence the name, actually a keep. Only one American KZbinr has visited. Please, please do a video on this great city.

Mushy Pears at these restaurants are usually served in a porcelain dish on the side. Ordinary Chip shops would usually put them in a paper cup with a lid (gravy the same in some places).
