There are 40,000 football clubs in England, there are a few welsh clubs included that were formed at the start of the sport who play in the english system because they were the only opposition available, this would include Wrexham. The FA Cup is the longest running football cup competition. The teams that compete for it are the top 300 teams in England plus some of the next 700 teams based upon how they did in other cup competitions the previous season.

@@jk844100 There are 40,000 clubs registered with the football association. The number you quote probably doesn't include clubs that only play friendlies, school and childrens clubs, beach football, 5 a side football, futsal, walking football, disability football. There are probably more children who play football in the UK than there are adults. There are 60 million people living in England, there are villages with 500 inhabitants that have more than one club.

Football leagues in England are broken down into different tiers of football; professional, semi-professional and amateur leagues, the top of which is the Premier League. After that, the Championship, League One and League Two are the remaining professional leagues. After League Two, there is the National League, which is the first of the semi-pro leagues. There are two steps in the National League: The National League and the second step, the National League North/South, which cover the two halves of the country. Next is step seven, which is made up of leagues covering the four regional corners of the country The Northern Premier League Southern League Central Division Southern League South Division Isthmian League Premier Division After step seven, there are semi-pro and countless amateur leagues that span the entire country.

Virtually every town in the UK has multiple teams however he is talking here about the Professional football teams and mostly, only the ones that play in the top divisions, a Derby is when two local rival teams meet,I should also point out that Wales is overwhelmingly a Rugby country not a Football/soccer country and the the fact he didn't mention any of the London Teams is a big omission

@@carllynn4264 nah mate, you can still have derbies with multiple teams. In the west midlands for example, Villa, Birmingham, West Brom, Wolves and Walsall. Each game between them would technically be a local derby but I think the original comment was just saying that a derby game can only be played between 2 teams because only two teams can play in the game I guess? Compared to a horse race where 30 horses can compete in the derby I guess?

@@carllynn4264 Can you repeat that in English please! What has happened to the beautiful language of great poets and authors. The Six Nations is now almost a European competition, a long way from the four home nations it started out as, Ireland being one country back then, pre Irish Free State, it was an extension of the Calcutta Cup competition (England V Scotland), still awarded. The Netherlands and other European countries are up for joining if allowed to. Hopefully Italy might start to win some matches. They've won the most wooden spoons in the history of it. The Irish team is an Island of Ireland team. Also select players for the British and Irish Lions international competition team.

Did I miss something cos I didn't even hear him talk about any London teams? I am from North London and the two major teams in North London are Arsenal (Gunners) and Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs), Arsenal has a long history originally starting out in Woolwich Arsenal in South East London but moved to North London in 1913 but Arsenal and Tottenham have a huge rivalry, when I say they hate each other I mean they really hate each other and thats just the fans lol. There is a video by COPA90 Stories called "I Hate Everything About Them" - North London Derby | Derby Days" you will see how serious the fans are. My cousin was a professional footballer he started his career out at Celtic but spent most of his football career at Coventry City then went on loan to Leeds United before moving to Sheffield United, then over to Portsmouth, back to Coventry City and then last of all before he retired as a footballer to Notts County where he actually scored a blinding goal from the half way line right at the end of his career he only retired this year, but he is now assistant head coach at Forest Green Rovers, his name is Michael Doyle.

Portsmouth FC (or Pompey as its known) has the oldest football chant. The Pompey Chimes dates back to the 19th century. Great reaction. I'm not really a footie (football) fan myself but some top teams in the country were mentioned. Londoners will probably be upset as no London teams were mentioned. For example, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham, Crystal Palace. My local side is Coventry City in the midlands, just east of Birmingham. Weve won the FA Cup once in 1987 which was a massive thing for us. I remember it well. The city went nuts! Sadly, atm, were not in the top flight as we used to be in the 70's and 80's, but Coventry city fans are always hopeful because we have to be! Cov city are known as the Sky Blues after the colour of the strip. Different teams have nicknames too. Everton are the Toffees because Everton was a big, sweet making area. Newcastle are The Magpies because they wear black and white like the bird. Likewise, Norwich are called the canaries because they wear Yellow. Apparently, Southampton are called the Saints because it was formed from a church side called Saint Marys. There is local history contained even in the nicknames of football teams.

However, what he failed to mention is that we only dropped as far as we did due to mismanagement and the club being half an hour from being wiped out of existence due to massive debt. Basically if you get into financial trouble you get relegated and lose points before you start the next season. A Derby is a bit like some College Bowl games, college sports in some ways are closer to how sports work in Europe as sports teams aren’t franchises, cities and even smaller towns can and do have multiple teams - so they have closer links to the local community than say NFL teams sometimes can (in the sense that say the only professional team for the whole PNW is the Seahawks) and teams *very* rarely move locations Kieran

The English cup competitions are annual knockout tournaments, with the League Cup’s competitor teams being from all the 4 football league divisions i.e. the top 4 leagues/divisions. The F.A. Cup includes all professional and even non-professional clubs, so there are many more rounds of matches/random draws to see who plays who. In addition to these cup competitions, there are matches where clubs play around 24 other teams from the same division, with league winners also receiving trophies. In each league, top 3 or 4 teams get promoted to the next tier, whereas bottom teams get relegated and drop down to the next tier. Some Welsh teams play in the English system, but also have Welsh Cup (similar to the English F.A. cup) competition. Winners of these various competitions qualify to play against the winners of European Cup Competitions.

As you may have seen from some of the comments, some local rivalries (or derbies, when they play each other) are fiercely contested by fans and teams alike! I think the most hated team would probably be at a more local level. You msy find out much more about Premier League teams in the US now as more clubs get American owners. There are 92 league teams in England 20 in Premier league, and 24 teams in the championship (think second division) 24 in league One(think 3rd division) and 24 teams in League Two(think 4th Division). At the end of each season, bottom teams in each division get relegated to the league below them, and the top teams in the lower league get promoted to take their place in the league above. There are two major cup competitions as well, the League cup, which is open to all 92 league teams, played on a knockout basis with a final at the national stadium at Wembley. The FA Cup, which incidentally is the oldest knockout cup competition in world football, is open to every football team in the entire country, which is usually somewhere in the region of 750.......the tournament begins in October/November, with the most junior teams playing in preliminary rounds...the league one and two professional clubs enter the tournament in the first round proper, and the top two divisions enter in round three proper in early January......its a straight knockout tournament, winner of each game proceeds on to the next round, loser is eliminated. There is no seeding, a draw is made for each round of the tournament, and anyone can play anyone..so if a lower league team (say a local village team)get drawn against Manchester United, they might get to go and play at Old Trafford in front of a crowd of 70,000, or alternatively, if Liverpool were to get drawn against our local village team, they could get to go and play on what amounts to a local park in front of 400 people and a dog........(ok I exaggerate bit there, but you get the idea...) the tournament is no respecter of persons, and many's the time the little guys have beaten the big guys....(we British love a spot of Giant-killing, and we always support the underdog!!!) The FA cup itself is considered the most important trophy to win after the Premier league title....The ultimate achievement was always seen as being the team who wins both the premier league title AND the FA Cup in the same season(known as doing the double).........

The term Derby refers originally to a horse race. Before the Grand National, the Epsom Derby was the premier horse race in Britain (and Ireland) with incalculable amounts of money bet on it every year. Hence every important sporting event, particularly between old rivals (and regional enemies) became a Derby.

The Premier League is the top tier with 20 clubs, then below is The English Football League system (EFL) which comprises The Championship, League 1 and League 2, these 3 leagues make up tiers 2 to 4 and each have 24 clubs, so 72 clubs in total, so the top 4 tiers total 92 clubs, below that is the national league and so on, and so on. Wrexham AFC are a Welsh team currently in the national league, they've recently been bought by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney and a Disney+ documentary is currently running following their progress in attempting to gain promotion to League 2 (so from the 5th tier to the 4th tier), financially this promotion into the 4th tier is massive as teams in League 2 receive much more financial assistance. Wrexham AFC has an amazing history considering it's such a small town, they've played as high up as Tier 2 in the past and were the best team in Wales for many years, they are the third oldest professional football team in the world, and their home ground 'The Racecourse' is the oldest stadium in the world that hosts international football matches, having hosted their first international match in 1877, I'd strongly advise watching the TV show as it would be a great introduction to how football works over here, the show breaks it all down for people who are complete newbies to the sport, love your reactions!

Just want to say that the pinnacle trophy for any club to win (outside of their own country's top league) is the Champions league (there are other European club trophies but this is the big one) This takes usually the top 4 or 5 teams from select top divisions in Europe at the end of their season, pits them against each other in a tournament and whichever team comes out on top are the CLUB Champions of Europe (it's actually a lot more complicated than that but that's the gist lol) When it comes to countries the World cup tournament is obviously the pinnacle and countries have to qualify for the World cup it's not open to all. Just like to add that previously, if a club wins 5 Champions league trophies they get to keep the trophy permanently as oppose to handing it back. Now the trophy is permanently the property of Uefa and a club winning 5 Champions leagues get a badge. The last club to get to keep the trophy permanently?......Liverpool 😁

The FA Cup is the equivalent of the Super Bowl or World Series here in the States. The biggest difference is that over 300 teams get to participate and who plays who is done by random drawing, unlike the way the play-offs in the NFL are organized. As a result, the FA Cup play-off games always have surprises where an underdog team will beat a higher ranked team. The League Cup is a secondary competition, organized in the same way as the FA Cup. The League Cup Final is played early in the New Year, whereas the FA Cup Final is always played after the season finishes.

I'll treat you to the book as it's nearly your birthday. Also, Pompey, as your club is known by as a nickname, has held the FA Cup longer than any other team in the competition, at 7 years. This was from 1939 through to 1946. Some jealous supporters of lesser clubs say this was because of something called World War II, but that's just sour grapes :)

Your commentator said that there were 2 teams in Birmingham, actually in th earea are Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) and West Bromwich Albion (the 'Baggies'). These two along with Aston Villa were among the twelve founding members of the Football League which is the basic structural organisation of the game in England along with the FA (Football Association). The League system is the structure of all contries who playu the game but the number of divisions may vary.. Originally in England there were 4 divisions of approximately 24 teams in each. However the top 22 teams broke away in the 1990s and formed the Premier league, but still as part of the structure, The second division became the 'Championship' and the others became Div. 1 and Div. 2. and there is still relegation and promotion between all divisions.

The best way to learn about English clubs and structure is to simply download the 5 league tables i.e. The Premiership, The Championship, League One, League Two and the National League and then follow the results of the games usually played onTuesday evenings and Saturdays. There are 92 clubs, known as 'league' clubs in the first 4 divisions. The National League is known as 'non league' but is interesting because there are ex league clubs in there, e.g. Wrexham, all trying to get out and restore their league status.

The most policed derby in England is West Bromwich Albion v Wolverhampton Wanderers, it isn't so bad these days, but 20 years ago it was really something. But, at the end of the day, the biggest derbies are those against your closest rivals, if that is say Gresley Rovers v Burton Albion, it doesn't matter if 2,000 turn up or 200,000; that's the big game for the supporters.

He would’ve probably opted for Forest as they have won the European Cup twice and are now in the Premier League whilst my Derby have had some rotten luck with owners and were relegated to League One 😢 Leicester won the Premier League recently with an amazing underdog story, worth looking into. So the East Midlands has some very healthy football history. Leeds is the most hated team in the UK, they had a reputation for being overly aggressive and nasty from years back that they can’t shake.

A derby is a game played between two teams from the same city or from the same geographical region/area. These games are very important for clubs and fanbases because of the huge rivalries they host. I am not exaggerating when I say that the atmosphere and the importance in these matches are just like the ones at the Superbowl. We say that a win in the derby can heal a season of hell. I am an Inter fan, one of the two big team of Milan, Italy (many foreigners call us Inter Milan but we in Italy just say Inter whilst Milan is how we call AC Milan) and you can feel derby's atmosphere building up since 2 or 3 weeks prior to the match itself even if it's comparable to a normal American "regular season" game, even more if it's a huge event like a Champions League game, for example in the last decade we experienced two Champions League finals Between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid and a Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate (the two teams of Buenos Aires) which were huge events. We can say that a derby is the peak of the rivalry between two sides of a city, one of the greatest things you can experience in derbies are tifos that fans display when the players enter the pitch, however there would be so many things to talk about speaking of derbies, especially because every city and team has different social, political and cultural backgrounds and because European's but also South American's concept of football is more like a religion. I suggest you to watch this two videos to get a glimpse of the atmosphere you have in games like these: - kzbin.info/www/bejne/on6wdnVmrM1nrKs - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXSVfKV-aNpgb9E
