I've been riding the American Eagle since the 90s. In the 2000s and 2010s I lamented the odd design of a racing coaster using a helix to turn around, but now in the 2020s it's just delivering rippingly fast fun runs. It's such a joy in a park that has been building nothing but short coasters for 2 decades.

It is a piece of junk. You also have to laugh at the parks nonsense story of RMC opting for utilizing Iron Wolf’s empty plot, rather than tackling what would have been the most ambitious coaster project ever at that time. When you think about it the dual track is actually an advantage for older coaster the way they are using the American eagle. The side that’s not being used can be fixed. the track gets a break while the other one that’s freshly repaired is good to go. If there was only one track this coaster would probably close frequently for repair but instead it can always run because one track always works. American Eagle was an amazing coaster when it raced! It definitely does not need RMC treatment. It just needs taken care of like Racer at Kings Island! It’s a shame that Six Flags neglected it so much that they can’t even race it. The helix is not boring. It’s an amazing element of the ride. It’s thrilling feeling the constant increase in speed until it spits the train out into the air time drop. Not every element has to be intense to be interesting! Also, the ride is the same length on both sides. The final helixes are different sizes. The coaster serves a great purpose at great America when they run both sides. I've never been to Six Flags Great America, but like how massive the giant helix looks. I do find the helix an odd design choice on a racing coaster where there are no right turns taken by both tracks together. The train on the inside track on the helix seems like it should always win the race. Especially if both trains leave the station together. The race is probably evened out a little by the fact the blue side has to travel a little further after the helix to get to the other side of the structure. That's probably why it has fewer hills too, it has to make it under the red side return run and the red and blue outward runs. They could have had the red side race to the other side, but then they would have had a mobius racer (like Kennywood's Racer.) Then they would have been forced to run and race both sides every time forever, for the life of the ride. To make the ride even more thrilling, they could remove the wings from the trains and bring back the buzz bars. Unfortunately they are probably at the mercy of their insurance providers.
@cultinthewoods2 ай бұрын
I noticed red side (inside) winning more when they properly raced, but the blue side also has a slightly tighter final helix.

The RMC conversion fell through because the DOT prohibits any major changes to American Eagle since the helix is too close to I-94. The current structure is grandfathered in, and only permitted to be maintained. An RMC conversion would need to rebuild the helix elsewhere, or scrap the iconic element entirely.

My first rides on American Eagle _were_ in 2013, but I think I rode the forwards side back then. I could have sworn the blue side ran forward and the red backward, but I was 11 years old at that point so my memory’s pretty fuzzy. Either way I think I normally went on blue back then so maybe it went backward. Hopefully they can refurb it entirely so it can race again. They can’t build over the road anymore so I think the ride should be safe barring some sort of fire or something, even if they started running it more sporadically to extend its life at some point.

Blue had backwards trains sporadically. It wasn't consistent.

Something I know isn't realistic for a variety of reasons but that is love to see is for RMC to do a Topper track conversion of older wooden coasters but adjust the layout in the same manner as the I-box conversions do. This would be a great candidate for such a conversion (though I realize that the park has one of the few remaining Topper track woodies.) But my point is that the Topper track would give them the ability to both overhaul the layout but keep the coaster a woodie. Yes, I know RMC does not offer Topper Track on their website and they haven't built that coaster type in years. I'm just saying it would be nice to continue the legacy of great wooden coasters but also upgrade the layout. It would be the opposite approach from GCI Titan track.

Would be awesome if the Gravity Group did their magic on it. To be fair, I've never been on this ride, I can only judge it by POV's and Offrides. Gravity group could not only make it less rough, but maybe even reprofile some of the hills and the slow helix elements. With new track it wouldn't bee needed to slow it to a crawl, so the second helix might actually produce some forces. Big plus if they went with Gravity Group: It would remain a true wooden coaster. There is still a debate if the RMC topper tracks still count as "full" wooden coasters, since not only the running rail is steel, but also the big top layer of the track. (Not an important thing though).

In all honesty, with Great America being my home park, just get rid of it at this point. I don't wanna see a retrack or even an rmc unless it becomes one of the world's best coasters. It's such a rough, uninteresting, and boring ride. The queue is ugly as all hell with chain link fencing and overgrown bushes. I've done both sides multiple times and that area is so insanely valuable, putting a Leviathan or Orion style, maybe even Fury 325-esque giga in that land if some more space could be opened would be far better than keeping a mediocre coaster or taking a massive risk with RMC'ing it. I think the park president is making a massive mistake right now. The helix sits on a flood zone and not much can be done there. This ride is just gonna get worse and worse over time to the point where a deciscion needs to made or something happens. Just completely scrapping it, maybe sell peices of the ride's wood as memorabilia, get a nice profit after it's torn down would be cool. American Eagle's current state is such an embarrassing eyesore for the park. I know Great America is highly regarded by the coaster community (because, yeah, I guess it has a lot of rides), but when I last visited in 2018, that long ramp making you pass by abandoned train tracks and overgrown shrubbery- complete with ugly and dilapidated chain link fencing surrounding the station and those god awful Takis ads they used to plaster everywhere- made me have an existential crisis and come to a similar conclusion that the KZbinr Coaster Bot came to- that I'm not really a "coaster" guy and moreso care about the theming & experience as a whole. What's hilarious is that I'm pretty sure the dive machine was still in operation back then so it's about a hundred times worse now. The fact I had to sit there and also look at the tracks for an abandoned transport ride for a park that long ago probably cared about presentation, theme, detail, etc. but hey, now we have a larger number of coasters to write down on a fact sheet! American Eagle is absolute fun and must be kept wooden. She is an historical coaster and has been synonymous with Six Flags Great America for decades. Changing her would be sacrilegious. ✌🏻🇺🇸🎢

Doubtful it'll ever get RMC'd since they have one already. My word though, the wood needs paint badly, and railing in some areas are crazy. They should be doing yearly maintenance.

We've seen other parks get multiple RMCs so it could happen if the park wanted it.
